Christmas time begins four weeks before Christmas with the lighting of candles on the Advent wreath. The whole family usually gathers around the table and lights a new candle each Sunday before Christmas. This period is called Advent.

We love the St. Nicholas Day. It is celebrated on 6 December. We clean our little boots the night before and put them on a windowsill. If we were nice, we would see in the morning our boots filled with candies that St. Nicholas brought us. If we were naughty, evil Krampus would bring us a small wooden stick called „šiba“.

We cannot imagine our Christmas trees without a wheat pot underneath them, so we plant the wheat on St. Lucy's Day on 13 December.
The wheat symbolizes the coming year and new life. The thicker and more beautiful it grows, the better the harvest in the next year will be. We love this day because St. Lucy also brings us presents.

Cakes are made and christmas trees are set up and decorated on Christmas Eve. Christmas wheat from St. Lucy’s Day is tied with a colourful red, white and blue ribbon (the colours of the Croatian flag).
We fast on Christmas Eve and eat fish. The smell of cod fish is coming from almost everybody’s homes and whether prepared “in bianco”, “in brodetto” or baked, it is one of our favourites.

All delicious cakes our mums have prepared stay untouched on Christmas Eve and we eat fritule (little doughnuts) instead. They are so easy to make and so yummy. You should try:
Ingredients: 1 egg; 1 cup yoghurt; 1-2 cups flour; 1 tsp vanilla; 2 tsp baking powder; 1 Tbsp rum or brandy; 2 Tbsp sugar; raisins (optional)
Instructions:
- Mix all ingredients.
- Drop rounded tablespoonfuls of butter in hot oil and fry 2 or 3
fritule at a time, until golden, about 4-5 minutes.
- Drain on paper towels and dust with confectioners’ sugar.
