Dave wants to buy the laptop shown but doesn't have all the money needed to pay for it today. He decides to make 5 monthly payments (<em>fixed expense</em>) until all of the laptop is paid for.

If Dave makes 5 equal payments, how much will he pay each month?

Before we decide which operation we're going to perform, let's look at the important information given in the problem.

The first thing that it states is that Dave wants to buy the laptop shown.

The next thing that's important is that he decides to make five monthly payments until the laptop is paid for

and those five payments will be five equal payments that he will pay each month.

So we'll start by asking ourselves. Do we have a total?

And we would say yes because we have a total of the laptop that's $1,525. Because we said yes, we will be separating that total. Do

we need equal parts or groups? According to the problem, Dave will make five equal payments to pay for the laptop.

So we would say yes, and that means we need to divide 1,525 / 5 monthly payments. And because of those

Solve the following equations by using the basic fact first.

For my first number sentence, I'm trying to figure out 72 ones divided by 8 and 72 ones is simply the number 72 that I will

be dividing by 8, which is known as our basic fact. And 72 divided by 8 is 9. I can also say that 8 times 9 is 72.

Now think about how this basic fact here can help me solve the next one.  72 tens divided by 8. Now 72 tens is simply the number 720

divided by 8. If you compare the 72 with 720, you will notice that the 720 is 10 times greater than 72;

therefore, when we go to put our quotient or answer, our answer will also be 10 times greater

and therefore giving us the answer of 90. 72 tens divided by 8 or 720 divided by 8 is 90. The pattern continues

as we solve the next number sentence. 72 hundreds divided by 8 or 7,200 divided by 8. Again, we increased. We got 10 times

greater than the previous total and therefore, the answer got 10 times greater than our previous one. 900.

Our last number sentence of 72 thousands divided by 8 is simply 72,000 divided by 8. Because 72,000 is 10

times the value of 7,200,  therefore, our answer will be 10 times the value of our previous answer which would be 9,000.

Michelle wants to buy the camera and the tv. She wants to make 6 equal monthly payments.

Use a division strategy to solve this problem.

Before we could decide which operation to use first, let's look at the information given in the problem that's important. We know that Michelle wants to buy the camera

The cost of the camera is $1,054, and the cost of the TV is $866. She wants to make 6 equal

And then we need to figure out how much Michelle will pay each month.

So we need to ask ourselves. Do we have a total?

And in this case we would have to say no. We do not know the total cost of the camera and the TV combined,

so therefore, because we say no we will be combining. Are we going to have equal parts or groups?

So we would have to say no and because we said no that means we need to add to find our total.

Let's break apart $1,525 so that it is easily divided by 5.

Michelle wants to buy the camera and the tv.

Use your partial quotients to calculate this answer.

We will be using standard algorithm to solve the problem $1,920 total divided into 6 monthly payments. We will begin here

in the thousands place. I have one thousands cube and I need to divide that into 6 monthly payments. Because I only have

one cube, I cannot divide that evenly into six groups or six monthly payments. So that means I was able to make zero

groups of 6 and 6 times 0 is 0. I subtract. I'm still left with the one or the one thousand cube. I

bring down my 9 that's in the hundreds place. I will have to decompose that thousands cube into hundreds and now I have 19 hundreds.

Now I need to think about I need to make 6 groups of this number to give me 19 or as close as possible without going over.

If I'm trying to use all 19, here is some basic facts that can help me get there. 6 groups of 2 gives me 12. 6 groups of 3

gives me 18, and 6 groups of 4 gives me 24. 24 is too much. So I will need to use 6 groups of 3. 6

groups of 3, 6 times 3 is 18. I subtract. I still have 1 of the hundreds left. Now I bring down

the 2. The 2 that's in the tens place. I will have decomposed this 10 into 10- 10 tens. And so therefore 10 tens plus 2

So now I need to think about this: 6 groups of this number gets me 12. Well here I see as my basic fact 6 times 2 is 12.

So I will do 6 groups of 2. 6 times 2 is 12. We subtract. There are zero remaining.

But just because we had zero left here, does not mean we are done. We need to make sure that we bring all of our numbers out and divide every single place. So now we have zero

left over and I need to make 6 groups of this number to give me 0. Well that's easy. 6 times 0 is 0. We subtract.

And now we have used all of the money or the total that was in this problem,

which means we have found our quotient of $320.

Michelle will pay $320 each month for 6 months.

What do you do with the total for the camera and tv? What operation is next and WHY?

Before we decide which operation is next, we must ask ourselves, do we have a total? And this time we would say. Yes, we have the total for the camera and

the TV of $1,920. Because we said yes, we know that we will be separating that total. Do we need equal parts or

groups though? Well in the problem, it stated that Michelle wanted to make 6 equal monthly payments. And that means we would say yes,
