This the Star of David. It is a Jewish symbol composed of two overlaid equilateral triangles that form a six-pointed star. It appears on synagogues, Jewish tombstones, and the flag of the State of&nbsp;Israel.

ration - a fixed amount of a commodity officially allowed to each person during a time of shortage, as in wartime. In our story MANY items were rationed. (Light was one that people couldn't use freely.)

Stars pattern

The map shows Copenhagen where Annemarie and Ellen live.  They were traveling with Annemarie's mother the to coast, where the beach is. Uncle Henrik is a fisherman. If you stand on the beach in Denmark, you can see Sweden.  At the time of the war, Sweden was not occupied by the Nazis. This meant that NO Nazis were in Sweden, it was a free country.
