How The West’s Landscapes Shape Our Identity And Culture

1. What is geography through one or more of the Five Themes of Geography? -Human environment interaction: The Golden Skybridge shows human environment interaction because the humans had to clear parts of the forest to build the coaster. They had to map out where the track goes. They had to plan around the mountain side so it’s safe but also a lot of fun. -Movement: This photo represents movement because the coaster is going down the track, using the hill. Also on the coaster there is the brake and the handle to make you go faster. -Location: The Golden Skybridge is in Golden B.C. and is named that because of its location and of course the famous bridge. 2. What made and makes the West by how this photograph represents the physical environment influencing the nature of political, social, and economics in the West. -Political: The government had to make sure it was safe enough for the public. built into more of course -Social: They help tourism in the town, its a tourist attraction. Instead of them going past the town they might stop along the way to take a break form driving and do this fun activity. -Economics: You have to pay to go there. To zip line, the obstacle course, all of it you have to pay for. There is also a gift shop that has things from bracelets to really expensive things like hoodies. 3. Your own connection and interpretation of the place the photo represents -I connect to this because well it was fun and will be a great memory of mine! But also I went on it a couple times too!

What is geography through one or more of the Five Themes of Geography? -This photo represents movement because in the photo I took there is a boat, on a tour showing tourists the lake, along with sharing the information from the past and spreading the information about the place. They talked about the environment around them like the aspirin trees and how they are all connected underground, so technically one tree. The boat was exploring all over the lake, which is movement. This is also human environment interaction because they are using the environment around them to show and better understanding and a more clear view of the lake! The boat in the water and using the information they have learned over time -Human environment interaction because they are teaching the tourists not to harm the environment. They are also doing boat tours around the lake for an hour, filling us in about all about the lake, its history and the nature surrounded by it. It is also the biggest lake in the region! 2. What made and makes the West by how this photograph represents the physical environment influencing the nature of political, social, and economics in the West. -Political: The Canadian flag on the boat is representing Canada and showing that they are proud of being Canadian. On the boat tour they taut us about the history of the place and how the government back then made the kids build the dam for a a dollar a day. The men were in the war and the women were busy doing the chores and cooking. -Social: On the boat tour the tour guide was telling us all about the lake and the history of it all. He told us fun facts about the tress around the lake and the nature. I found when visiting the beach many people around the place were talking to each other and e joying the views. -Economics: The government and the workers there are making money off of the tickets you have to buy to go on the boat tour. If you want to learn more about the history and about the lake in general, you have to pay for it. You also have to pay for parking there, otherwise you would have to walk or buy a ticket to go on the bus. 3. Your own connection and interpretation of the place the photo represents This place is connected to me because so far for this I have been taking a photo of me in the red chairs everywhere at the national parks. Also coming to these parks connect to the ones they keep making and the ones at home. In 1912 and 1941 kids around my age had to build the dam, that is now underwater on the lake. They kids have to give up school (or be happy for no more school while they were building the dam) to create it.

1. What is geography through one or more of the Five Themes of Geography? -Rogers Pass is all of the 5 themes of geography. Movement because Major Roger helped build the CPR. Once it was complete the trains used the CPR to carry and transfer many goods, from one place to another, more quick. Human interaction environment because they found a place and helped modify it to their liking. Major Roger found Rogers Pass and was named after him, since he found it, thats how it’s a region. It’s along the CPR which is location and the coordinates are 51.2833° N, 117.5167° W. Lastly place, which is political ideology’s. They were looking for a clear pass for the CPR because the government was trying to build the railway and needed a clear place to build it. The photo I took represents human environment interaction because it shows how Major Roger found the place and pushed through the winter weather, until he had to give up and come back a year later. He dealt with the weather and then built the CPR. He used his surroundings to create a place to stay for him through it all. 2. What made and makes the West by how this photograph represents the physical environment influencing the nature of political, social, and economics in the West. -Political: Major Roger was a very stubborn man. SO when he turned back because of the weather, that was a big thing. But he then returned back a whole year later, which is quite a while considering someone else could have found it and gotten the credit. -Social: This became a historical event. It is also a well known place that talks about him and about the CPR there. It’s called Rogers Pass Center to learn about the mountains around rogers pass and along with more information about Major Roger. Many tourists stop along the way there, which I learned from my interview. -Economics: The creation of Rogers Pass made it that many people come and visit. It makes a part of the CPR which delivers the goods. You have to pay to visit the place too. 3. Your own connection and interpretation of the place the photo represents -Rogers Pass connects to me because like I said the CPR carry’s the goods I use and buy at my grocery store and other stores.

My name is Charlie. I’m in a program called PLP (Performance Learning Program). In this program we went on a trip, to learn more in depth of what we are currently learning. I’m 14 years old in grade 9. This trip was about Western Canada’s geography and how others see it. Other than the trip here are some things about me. I love photography and editing. I love to longboard, read and play volleyball. I’m doing the basketball academy and when I’m at home, my brother likes to get on my nerves when shooting hoops with him, how much fun! But that kind of helped to make me better. This trip I got to learn more about my classmates and teachers, for the good and sometimes worse, (more of my classmates for the worse). I love spending time with my friends and this was such a great opportunity to do that!

While on the trip I had to take photos that I could then make into a comic strip that represent each of the five themes of geography. I have a couple drawings, colourful lettering, and I tried to take photos that really represent one of the five themes and that are interesting.

What made and makes the West from this photo is that in the photo it is showing the workers hammering down the last spike. When the workers completed the CPR it created many major city’s along the CPR rail, which impacted the people who live along the CPR. The process of making the CPR wasn’t great, but the end result was a good thing and made Canada more connected. It made people visit more of Canada from each side and everywhere in between.

1. What is geography through one or more of the Five Themes of Geography? Cave and Basin would be location for one of the themes of geography. It is location because it is the first National Historic site, so its a very important location. It made other historical sites happen that so many other people can visit and learn more about the history. 2. What made and makes the West by how this photograph represents the physical environment influencing the nature of political, social, and economics in the West. -Political: The government voted for the site to be a historical site to help preserve the snails and keep them alive. The hot springs aren’t heated by any volcanoes, instead its the Manama way down in the earth. -Social: They are helping preserve more snails because at that spot there is snails that live in the hot springs, and when people use to bath in it the snails started to become extinct. You are now not allowed to swim in them because they want to grow the population of those snails again because this is the only place they live. If they become extinct the ecosystem their would fail and then it wouldn’t be the same. The park rangers there also inform many tourists and visitors about the historical event, along with the snails. -Economics: Since this became the first national site, it brings many tourists because of the beautiful hot springs and the history of it all. You have too pay to get in so they make their money off of that. 3. Your own connection and interpretation of the place the photo represents -This connects to me because making this one the first historical site encouraged other places to become a historical site. This connects because I have visited a couple historical sites and learned many things about the history of Canada, where I live and learn about.

This photo represents movement because in the picture are the apple boxes are from Salmon Arm, that were brung to there by train and to other parts in B.C. To get it all these places they were transported by train. In the photo you can also see on the boxes the logo of where they are from. On them it says Salmon Arm, B.C. Canada. Which represents location. Lastly in the background you can see the sign where it says Canadian Pacific Railway, which is region. 2. What made and makes the West by how this photograph represents the physical environment influencing the nature of political, social, and economics in the West. -Political: When being able to transfer these types of things, it helped build the way the town, or place where people lived. It impacted the government and how they’ve shaped the town because of the fresh new goods coming in and people starting to move closer to the area and actually in to the town. -Social: Being able to transfer goods faster, impacted the way people were living. They changed their ways. The culture, what they ate, because of things like the fresh apples being delivered. In some areas where the train didn’t arrive in those towns, people moved to where the train did, to get these goods easier, which changed the population in areas all over Canada. -Economics: The items being transported over to certain areas from the train helped the businesses with more buyers. It also helped the stores, when buying these products for their stores, more people went to them to get the goods. It helped supply more jobs for the CPR, having more goods to transport that needed to be transported on a tight time limit too. 3. Your own connection and interpretation of the place the photo represents -I connect to this because in the photo it is showing the apples that were transported by the train to I’m assuming around Vancouver. That train made it possible for people who lived around here as an example, and couldn’t eat fresh fruit, and in the off seasons, could finally because of the CPR. It wasn’t just for apples, it was also for many other different fruits, vegetables and more.

Fun fact: Many people dive down in the winter when the water is more still and there is less movement on the bottom floor. Since it is frozen over in the winter, there is barely any movement. It’s the same temperature all year around roughly to scuba dive, so it doesn’t really water when you go, you just have to be mindful of the movement underwater.

Geography is the earths surface, climate, plants, animals, humans and how they all are connected. Geography isn’t just the things you can necessarily see. Different cultures, religions and the range of ways people live, also fall into that category. Things like climate change, the pollution and all of the other struggles in the world that we have produced, that is now hurting us. Learning all about our world in school or outside, is very important to know about. We need to learn this so we can find solutions and not make the mistakes like what is happening with climate change. Along with that, the different countries and how they work and grow all make up geography. We are shaped how we view our world from the information we consume. 

How has the geography of the West shaped who we are?

The West is made up from its geography, cultures, and the history. What makes it the West is the landscapes, how people have adapted to the climate and their surroundings. The different cultures help bring towns together, and make it the West. The history, to learn from it and grow to make the West a stronger environment. By West we mean the western part of Canada, the region, like B.C. and Alberta.

The geography of the West such as the mountains, rivers, lakes, beaches has impacted how people live and shape the communities. People helped build the communities where there is easy access to water, food, and a place for shelter. It’s shaped how we travel and the resources we use to help build our communities and cultures. All of those features helped create the West to how it is to this day. The history and to this present day help making the town it’s own, and keeps it thriving. Where we have settled created and helped form traditions, cultures, and how we live our daily lives. 

My group members Matteo, Lucas A and I created this silent video at the Three Valley Gap Ghost Town. There is a tourist visiting the town. Along the way he meets a local, and the local shows him all around. Is the local really that friendly, or is the tourist? Will this really be a regular day in the ghost town…

Cave and Basin National Historic Site

Notes I Took At Cave and Basin: How does it shape the Cave and Basin now? Geography of the West: -Look at the past -It was a big place where many people stayed and was a big place for them because of the hot springs -tourism -The sulphur hot springs, smell, history and what they used them for -the pretty views of the hot springs, but the mountains within this place At Cave and Basin they had a chalk board that had some questions on them, such as; what does a resilient community look like? what examples of resilience have YOU noticed in nature? I found them having the chalk board there to let people answer from all over the world is a great idea. It shows all these different perspectives, which is important for the people who love and work there to understand more of where they live and how people see the place. What have I learned: -If snails die in those hot springs, the ecosystems won’t work because they eat something in the water, which keeps the population down. Also the snails are eaten by something which keeps their population down too. It’s important to keep these snails alive and care for them.

 Since we had to take two trips, while the other trip, two, was gone, trip one, (my group) was home. While trip two was away we created this at home video called What Inspires Me? I made a voice over about what does inspires me and photos and videos that relate to my voiceover. Long-boarding, hiking, boating, all shape who I am. All those fun activities I do, I got to make represents who I am.

What is geography through one or more of the Five Themes of Geography? -One of the five themes would be human environment interaction because in the photo there is a person taking a photo of the beautiful view. There were many people there taking photos of themselves in front of the lake. They were posing and probably were doing that to post on social media after. There are also people in the canoes paddling around on the lake. This photo also represent place because of the landforms, the mountains and the colour of the lake make the lake somewhat well known. 2. What made and makes the West by how this photograph represents the physical environment influencing the nature of political, social, and economics in the West. -Political: Many tourists come and visit Lake Moraine. It’s known for the beautiful colour of the water and walk along the lake. You can rent canoes there to make it a memorable experience. -Social: Like all the national parks there is different places all around the area that has information about the place and the history. -Economics: To get to Moraine Lake you hav dot take a shuttle, which you have to pay for and book the tickets in advance. You don’t have to take the shuttle, you can walk or bike, but it is around a 25km walk, so if you do, good luck. By the lake there is a gift shop to remover your experience there. You can also rent canoes there, but they are really expensive. I think it was 25 bucks for half and hour and just under a 100 for an hour. That’s how they make a lot of money, form those canoes, the over priced gift shop, and of course the shuttles. 3. Your own connection and interpretation of the place the photo represents -I connect to this because all over social media I see people travel the world and even come to this lake. They post videos and photos of them in the canoe on the vibrant water. It’s also a national park, which helps keep the other parks alive so I can visit many more!

On the trip I realized I should film multiple TikTok’s just in case. These are the TikTok’s that I’m no so proud of. They didn’t go exactly how I wanted to. I still wanted to show them because it might take a couple of try’s or to shift your idea a bit to get the final product! 

This TikTok is the jumping transition. This video we started off at Costco in Kamloops, our first stop. At all the places we found so pretty or that relates to our thesis and driving question. It took us a couple try’s, but the end result was worth it!

This TikTok is a mashup of all the photos I have taken from the trip. Of my friends, the pretty scenery and everything in between. I loved creating this. I found getting the timing with the sound and photos was a bit hard at first. But then later I got a hang of it.

This TikTok is the spin transition. We started off at Seycove early in the morning waiting to leave. We finished it off on the top of Sulphur mountain in Banff, Alberta. After the long hike up the mountain we decided to finish it there because of how successful we felt for doing that hike and of course the beautiful view. 

Rocky Mountain Interviews Across B.C. And Alberta

1. What is geography through one or more of the Five Themes of Geography? When visiting the Icefields, there were people from NASA working on the glacier. In the photo it shows NASA in the tents, along with other people exploring the glacier. That would be human environment interaction since the scientists were doing experiments about and on the glacier. I’m assuming to find more information about the glacier, along with trying to keep it to melt not as fast. Movement is the people walking along the glacier to explore it. 2. What made and makes the West by how this photograph represents the physical environment influencing the nature of political, social, and economics in the West. -Political: NASA coming and them doing the experiments is big because they are taking their time to do the research, in Alberta -Social: Many tourists come and visit the glacier, to say they’ve walked on it, learn more about it and it’s beauty. When driving to the glacier the tour guide (and bus driver) was telling us all these facts and story’s. Asking where we were all from, how old the glacier is, and questions we had, he would answer. -Economics: If you want to experience, walking in the glacier, drinking the glacier water, going on the big bus that drives onto the glacier, and learn all about it, you have to pay for it. There is a also a gift shop there that has many souvenirs to buy to remember your trip! 3. Your own connection and interpretation of the place the photo represents I connect to this because they collect some of the glacier water, filter and clean it, and then it comes to my house, which I drink.

Why does Rogers Pass Exist? Major Roger discovered Rogers Pass on May 29 1881, trying to find a route for the CPR. They named Rogers Pass after Major Roger because he found it. Major Roger found the area, but then had to turn back because of the harsh winter and avalanches. After a year he decided t go back and then found the place properly. Since Major Roger found the place, the government was proud and presented him a $5000 cheque. He didn’t take it at first but then he took it a bit later.

When at the Icefield I thought it would be way cooler there. But in reality it was actually was not as cold. I might have just gotten use to the temperature, but it wasn’t that cold.
