Pathway Overview

Stride/K12 is partnering with the Local 49 of the Union of Operating Engineers to offer the Operating Engineer Pathway. This pathway is offered through Stride Career Prep at Minnesota Virtual Academy (MNVA).

Students participating in the pathway will take a series of classes that will prepare them to enter the Operating Engineers Apprenticeship program. Students may enroll in 1 or more courses offered. They are not required to commit to all courses offered and can be enrolled based on skill and educational level. These courses have flexible schedules to allow the students to be concurrently enrolled in their brick and mortar school for part time status or full time at MNVA.

Operating Engineer Basics

Whether it’s the roads you travel on, the bridges you cross, the buildings and complexes where you work... It’s a good bet they were built and are operated and serviced by members of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).

Operating Engineers survey the sites, make the cuts, hoist the steel and slabs. They operate the bulldozers, the motor graders, the backhoes, the cranes helping to form and shape the infrastructure and skylines. We work the mines, we dig the wells. Lots of opportunities are available in this diverse career field.

CAR022: CONSTRUCTION EXPLORATIONS

MFG010: BASIC GRADE & CONSTRUCTION MATH

Course Length: One semester

This course provides students with an introduction of the basic equipment used in the construction industry. Students learn about basic equipment operations and job responsibilities. This course prepares students to use concepts pertaining to safety, maintenance, mathematics and communication that Operating Engineers may experience.

Course Length: One semester

In the construction industry, grading is the work of ensuring a level base, or a grade with a specific slope. Grade construction work is needed in almost any building project, from laying a building foundation, to landscaping, or even roadwork. In this course, you will be introduced to core equipment used in the staking process, as well as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used in the construction industry. Communication processes used in the construction industry for interpreting and setting grade are also an important part of this course. Finally, you will learn mathematical concepts related to the construction industry for grade staking.

MFG201: ALV BASIC CONSTRUCTION Equipment Fundamentals

Course Length: One semester

In the construction industry, the proper use of heavy equipment is necessary to ensure quality work and a safe work environment. In addition, being able to recognize and determine the use of specific heavy equipment, will create a more efficient work team. Heavy equipment is used in almost any construction project, from building a house to excavating for a new road. In this course, you will be introduced to core equipment used by operating engineers, as well as their maintenance needs. Communication processes used by operating engineers, rigging and signaling practices, safety awareness and mathematical concepts related to the construction industry are also covered.

Course Length: One semester

This course focuses directly on maintenance of mobile equipment through a series of engaging tutorials. A major focus of the course is on maintenance safety including such topics as LOTO. Other topics include tools and fasteners, preventative maintenance principles, engines, intake and exhaust, fuel systems, coolant systems, filters and filtration, lubrication systems, hydraulics, electrical systems, tires, and tracks and undercarriages.

Pathway Perks

Students in the OE Pathway:

- Earn high school credit, college credit, and credit towards the apprenticeship.

- Get hands-on experiences at the Local 49 Training Center in Hinckley, MN.

- Meet local contractors to learn about their businesses, learn how to apply for positions and engage in Q&A sessions.

- Learn about Apprenticeship with Local 49.

Earning Credit

Students receive high school elective credit for all four courses. Each course is 0.5 credit (1 semester).

Students will receive 7.5 hours of related training credit at the Local 49 Adult Apprenticeship for each of the 4 courses.

Students can also earn 5 articulated credits at North Hennepin Community College* for each of the follow courses: Basic Grade & Construction Math, Basic Construction Equipment Fundamentals, and Basic Maintenance of Mobile Equipment.

* To earn articulated college credit, students must pass the course with 85% or higher. Upon completion of the course, students will be issued a certificate. Students are responsible for taking the certificate to NHCC at time of enrollment to be given credit for the course on their college transcript.

Hands-On Experiences

Students in the OE pathway receive hands-on training during Experience Days hosted by the Local 49 Training Center in Hinckley, MN. They learn to operate equipment, complete safety checks, tour the facility, and meet training center staff.

Contractor Panels

Contractors from around the state of Minnesota meet virtually with OE Pathway students. Students learn the ins and outs of various field work, company dynamics and how to apply for positions with these contractors. Students are able to ask questions during the contractor panels for a personalized experience.

New Students - How to Enroll

1. Go to https://mnva.k12.com/how-enroll.html and create an account.

2. Enroll your student in Stride Career Prep at Minnesota Virtual Academy

3. Under Student Detail in the application, select Part Time for the question: Is the student enrolling for Full or Part Time status?

4. Complete Admissions forms and you will be prompted to provide Compliance Item: MNVA Part Time Forms

- Complete the Identification Information section. Your school counselor will know your Student MARSS Number.

-Fill in your OLL Courses section with the MNVA courses you plan to take during the 2021-2022 school year. (see Operating Engineer Course Offerings)

-Student, parents and counselor need to sign in the appropriate locations on the forms.
