The students of the schools-partners test their knowledge regarding the measures of protection against infectious diseases and the kind of practices they adopt. They also produce materials to persuade the wider community to adopt these measures

Protecting ourselves and others 

For the majority of survey participants, covid-19 did not have a serious economic impact (73,5%). Their monthly income did not decrease and therefore they did not experience any particular difficulty in meeting their financial obligations. 8.8% even said the covid-19 period had a positive effect. However, almost three out of 10 experienced greater or lesser difficulties in meeting their obligations.

The degree of satisfaction of the survey participants from...

More than half of those who responded say they were not or only slightly satisfied with their lives in general during the lockdown period, but the situation they experienced does not seem to have a significant impact on their financial situation and personal relationships.

The stable professional position of most of them(public and private employees) could explain the reported satisfaction regarding their financial situation. Regarding personal relationships (let us note that most of the sample were women), the absence of effects is related to the feeling of the overwhelming majority (79.4%) that in an emergency there were people close to them who would lend a helping hand. This is also confirmed by the fact that while one would expect a significant percentage to feel lonely, this was not the case for 85.3% of the interviewees.

The timeline shows the most important pandemics over time that have led to the death of a very large number of people.

Social characteristics of survey participants

Most respondents to the questionnaire on the social consequences of covid-19 were aged 35-65 (73.5%), while 64.7% were female. 67.6% of the survey participants were Greek.

More than 7 out of 10 live in families with 3-4 members, while 2 out of 10 live in large families (20.6%). Most were public, private employees (26.5% vs. 23.5%), while a significant proportion were blue-collar workers (38.2%).

One of the victims of the plague that struck Ancient Athens during the second year of the Peloponnesian War was a girl. During the excavations, archaeologists unearthed her well-preserved bones and scientists gave her 'flesh and bones'.

In a brainstorming session, students were asked to name the first word that came to mind. The words mentioned were written on the board and then rated as positive or negative. It was found that the majority of the words have negative connotations. It was understood that the pandemic in people's minds is associated with a more or less unpleasant experience. Then a short video entitled "What is a pandemic?" was shown followed by a relative discussion.

Despite the rich information about the risks to humans by the covid-19 pandemic, it has been found that students are not sufficiently sensitized on this matter and get often caught up in misinformation. So our project aims to raise their awareness of the health and social consequences of a pandemic.

The Aims of the project were for students to: - be informed from reliable sources about the meaning of terms we use when we refer to pandemics - realize that pandemics are a timeless phenomenon - engage them in inquiry learning processes and mathematical models - comprehend the importance of the good practices against a pandemic depending on how&nbsp;it is transmitted - adopt non-medicinal ways of protection against communicable diseases - understand the implications of the pandemic's spread for a society - learn to share, help and cooperate with their school mates and students of other schools &nbsp;-&nbsp;enhance ICT skills by using the Twinspace and other apps/tools

Methodology The participating schools worked according to an agreed calendar. The work produced was communicated to the partners through twinspace and other web applications (timeline, videos, presentations, etc). Students worked in national and international teams for the activities that were assigned to them. At the end of the year an evaluation of the project by the students was carried out. The dissemination of the project took place on the websites and events of the schools, as well as on the blogs of the participating teachers.

Our research. The social consequences of the Covid-19.

To study the social consequences of the pandemic, the students /partners  worked as young researchers. Each student  asked a person over the age of 21 the questions in the questionnaire below and then filled in the answers on the questionnaire form.

Emotional effects during the covid-19 period

6 out of 10 had no negative emotions (sadness, depression, or nervousness), while a considerable proportion (4 out of 10) were quite emotionally affected. However, the vast majority (8 out of 10) said they often or very often felt happy.

Of the issues that concerned most people, health issues are the most common. The health of themselves but especially the health of their own people is a priority in their thoughts. Also other issues, in a smaller percentage of course, were also of concern to the interviewees, such as maintaining social ties, the issue of education during the lockdown, the household stress.  It is also noteworthy that there were some who responded positively regarding the problem of domestic violence.

Greek students complete the project evaluation questionnaire 

There is almost universal agreement (93,3%) that teenagers should take precautions. Ηowever students do not wear a mask at school (86.7%), but this percentage decreases when it comes to mask use in their social life. More 6 out of 10 say that they sometimes or always (63,4%) wear a mask. One might assume that they feel safer at school than when exposed to a wider environment. Vaccination can also play an important role in the way they behave in school.

As expected, the largest proportion of students goes to crowded places, but more than 3 in 10 either avoid it or are rarely there.&nbsp; It is notable that a significant proportion (43.3%) are careful to keep their distance when away from home.

Almost 9 out of 10 students recognize the contribution of the project in building a sense of preparedness to deal with the eventuality of a pandemic in the future. And the majority of those who do not feel ready (72% vs. 28%) want more information. Lastly the use of non-pharmaceutical means of protection against the pandemic won the students (84% vs 16%).

Climate change can have catastrophic effects on human societies, and its detrimental effects on health are no exception. Approximately 58% (218 of the375) of infectious diseases that humanity has ever encountered have been exacerbated by climatic changes. Empirical cases highlight 1006 different ways in which climate change paves the way for a spectrum of diseases.

Of all yardsticks of climate change, glacier ice is regarded as the most effective one, as glacier ice contains enormous amounts of information, and these data, including microbiology, aid in revealing paleoclimatic histories and forecasting the course of climate change.

A special report published by the Inter governmental Panel on Climate Change reported that anthropogenic activities have increased the global temperature by ~1°C since the pre-industrial era.  This current rate would precipitate an increase in global temperature by 1.5°C between  2030 and 2052, there by resulting in the&nbsp;melting of the glaciers. The risks stemming from the 1.5°C increase in temperature and their detrimental effects on health are now well reported. 

However, what awaits us under the frozen ground is unknown. For example, researchers found remnants of the 1918 Spanish Nu virus in Alaska's tundra. Bubonic plague and small pox viruses are also likely buried in Siberia.

The temperature rise in the Arctic Circle is three times faster than in other regions. Due to the cold, dark and oxygen-free environment, frozen soils are a good protector for germs and viruses. Viruses that can infect humans and animals, including those that have caused epidemics in the past, may have survived in this layer.

At the end of the project activities the students completed a questionnaire to evaluate the project. In the following pages we present the results of this evaluation.

The spread of a disease depends on many factors, such as the contagiousness of the disease, infectiousness, sociality, the limits of the health system, etc. Students used&nbsp; the mathematical model named SΙR: <a href="http://photodentro.pafse.eu/v/item/pafse/8586/48">http://photodentro.pafse.eu/v/item/pafse/8586/48&nbsp;</a> and investigated how &nbsp;sociability effects the spread of a disease

In this model, individuals are divided into 3 categories. The vulnerable, the sick and the healed. With the help of a cursor, we will change the sociability (on a scale from 0 to 50) and we will investigate how it affects the spread of the disease and in which cases the health system can withstand.

Justinian Plague

Students found it most difficult to understand medical terms (36%) and to draw conclusions from applying mathematical models (29%). To a lesser extent the use of English (21%) and even less so the use of technology tools (14%) were difficulties to overcome.

3. If sociability is 10 on the scale with a maximum of 50, 38% of the population will be infected in the first 23 days. The situation is better because there is more time until the peak of the disease, but the health system of our country, which has 6 ICU units per 100,000 people, will collapse, as shown in the image below.

4. If the sociability is below 4.80 on the scale with a maximum of 50, only 8% of the population will be infected and the health system can cope. In this case, however, this disease will peak after 70 days as shown in the image below. This means that for a long period of time social protection measures must be observed (distances, masks, quarantine, telecommuting - telelearning) which is not always possible.

Finally, 76.5% of respondents apply the instructions on covid-19.

The effects of covid-19 period on lifestyle habits

The restrictions during the pandemic affected the consumption of certain goods that were more accessible to the interviewees. Thus, there is an increase in the consumption of junk food, sweets and tobacco, but also fresh fruit and vegetables, while the increase in alcohol consumption seems to be limited. This phenomenon parallels the huge increase in the number of hours spent in front of the television and internet. Divided, however, are those who say that the lockdown condition increased, decreased or did not change the frequency with which they exercised.

According to the results of the project evaluation questionnaire, the vast majority of students recognise the need to inform young people about the pandemic phenomenon.

8 out of 10 consider that this project has helped them to understand the impact of pandemics on humanity over time.

According to the voting, the students decided that the logo of the project is Οption 7.

Washing hands does not seem to be a priority for students at different times of the day. Most wash their hands only when they think they are dirty, while antiseptic is more popular (86.7%). More than 8 out of 10  ventilate their room.

Finally, the presence of elderly or sick people around students is an incentive to take protective measures.

Turkish students fill their evaluation questionaires.

About 5,000 years ago, an epidemic wiped out a prehistoric village in China. The bodies of the dead were piled inside a house that was later burned down. No age group was spared, as the skeletons of juveniles, young adults and middle-age people were found inside the house. The archaeological site is now called "Hamin Mangha" and is one of the best-preserved prehistoric sites in northeastern China. Archaeological and anthropological study indicates that the epidemic happened quickly enough that there was no time for proper burials, and the site was not inhabited again. Before the discovery of Hamin Mangha, another prehistoric mass burial that dates to roughly the same time period was found at a site called Miaozigou, in northeastern China. Together, these discoveries suggest that an epidemic ravaged the entire region.

The purpose of the following questionnaire was to raise students' awareness of non-pharmaceutical protection measures. Boys and girls alike shared with us the practices they adopt in order to protect themselves and those around them, or indicate their relative detachment.

More than 7 out of 10 students had been vaccinated, while the majority of those who have not been vaccinated say they will not do so.
