Here you see pictures of the Moon's phases. New moon – when the Moon is between the Sun and Earth, it is lighted on the far side, and so we see a dark new moon. Full moon – when the Moon is on the opposite side of Earth, it is fully lighted, and we see a whole full moon. Half moon – when the Moon is between new moon and full moon, and in an angle of 90 degrees to Earth and the Sun, we see a half lighted half moon. The Moon is waxing, going from new moon to full moon, and waning, going from full moon to new moon.

Mikkel talks about the movement of the glacier, eventually resulting in calving. The movement is at its maximum by full moon. The explanation of this is that our moon has different phases, according to its position in relation to the Sun and the Earth. The phases are: new moon, half moon/crescent (first quarter and last quarter), full moon, waxing and waning moon. Whatever phase the Moon is in, it always pulls somewhat on the Earth. The Earth also pulls on us – what we call gravity. Not just the Moon pulls at the Earth, the Sun does too. By new moon and full moon the Moon and the Sun pulls extra much on the Earth. When the Moon pulls on the Earth, the water masses are affected, including the glacier at Ilulissat.

When Mikkel as a child went fishing with his father, they did all work manually, including cutting out the guts of the fish. Today fishing for halibut at the Icefjord is easier. Trawls are used, and often the boats are equipped to process the fish with machinery. You are now to produce a video showing a talk between Mikkel and his children. Mikkel would like to pass on tradition and his knowledge. Mikkel tells his children that fishing was better in his cildhood, when fishing was done manually. He also passes on his knowledge about the movement of the ice, so that the children will know when to take care. The children argue that they would rather fish with a modern boat and use modern equipment. Does Mikkel succeed in passing on the tradition to his children?

The permanent&nbsp;exhibition&nbsp;“The Story of Ice” is a presentation of the unique natural and cultural history of Ilulissat, including the climate changes that are having a dramatic impact on the area. This is the story about the creation of ice crystals in the clouds that will fall down on the inland ice, pack itself densely and with time evolve into a glacier front that will break off and become an iceberg that melts to water and then evaporates and returns to the clouds. Ice also means life to humans and animals that need the sea ice to hunt or fish. Here ice is the basis of life for nature and humans.
