The glacier in the Icefjord creates favourable conditions for fauna, and the abundant fauna has over time been a decisive factor in the survival of humans in the area. In earlier times large mammals such as seals and whales were essential for the settlements, and life was centred on ensuring good hunting conditions, for example through particular rituals. Today, the halibut and prawn catches are responsible for the bustling activity around Ilulissat Harbour. Hunting around the Icefjord is and has always been seasonal. In the summer, when the ice recedes, the animals come close to the coast and can be hunted from boats. In the winter, when sea ice covers the fjord, ringed seals, among other animals, can be hunted at their breathing holes in the ice. Many of the traditional fishing and hunting methods live on today, whether as sport or developed in new ways. The traditional methods still play an important role in local history and self-perception.

This is what we are. We are hunters … a hunting culture, and when I go sailing the first thing I think of is bringing my gun along. So when we sail out and come across a seal, then we shoot it, or try to shoot it. When it is dead, we flense and skin it and take it to a rock somewhere and sit down and eat the seal. We are having a good time on the way home. Then we catch maybe ten cod and some redfish to bring home and fillet them and put them in the freezer. &nbsp; So it is all about hunting and fishing. It is part of everyday life up here, it is natural. We grew up with this from childhood, it is the Greenlandic way of life. – Malik from the podcast

The permanent&nbsp;exhibition&nbsp;“The Story of Ice” is a presentation of the unique natural and cultural history of Ilulissat, including the climate changes that are having a dramatic impact on the area. This is the story about the creation of ice crystals in the clouds that will fall down on the inland ice, pack itself densely and with time evolve into a glacier front that will break off and become an iceberg that melts to water and then evaporates and returns to the clouds. Ice also means life to humans and animals that need the sea ice to hunt or fish. Here ice is the basis of life for nature and humans.
