The first experiment is called "CO₂ is a greenhouse gas". Here you examine why CO₂ is a greenhouse gas and how it affects temperature. The next experiment is called "The ice is melting – does the water level rise?" Here you will examine whether the water level always rises when ice from a glacier or an iceberg melts.

The glacier foot on the picture is from Sermeq Kujalleq. It has been moving forth and back through time.

The map shows the movements of the foot from the middle of the 19th century to 2018. On the next page you will find more information about glaciers.

Now you are going to listen to a podcast called Freedom and Dangers. You will hear about Ane Sofie and her husband Flemming. They tell about the freedom of being sledge drivers at the Icefjord. You will also learn about the importance of listening to your sled dogs when driving where the ice has become thin.

When a lot of snow is pressed together, layers of ice are formed. The increasing weight of this ice mass will make it start moving through the landscape. This is called a glacier. In the picture you see a glacier moving and finally calving. This means that pieces of ice break off the glacier and float into the water.

The climate comprises weather conditions on the planet Earth, like temperature and fall of rain. Climate changes may cause problems. Climate changes in Ilulissat have caused the ice to melt faster and become an unpredictable partner that life around the Icefjord must adjust to. Climate changes can be natural as well as man-made. When we talk about climate changes we usually refer to changes brought about by humans, often with focus on emission of greenhouse gases.

Greenhouse gases prevent the Earth from freezing to ice. Without greenhouse gases humans would not be able to live on Earth. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is the greenhouse gas most often heard about but there are others. Methane (CH₄) and water vapour (H₂O) are greenhouse gases too. Humans emit greenhouse gases when using fossil fuels like coal and oil. Too much greenhouse gas produces what is called the grenhouse effect. You will hear more about that in this video.
