In Northern Greenland it is quite normal that children learn to shoot animals from the age of 8-10. When a boy or girl has shot his or her first animal, it is celebrated with the whole family and all their friends. It is a hunter society where hunting and fishing are a part of everyday life. It is the Greenlandic way of life.

Which special occasions are celebrated where you live?

When William was 11 years old and was out sailing with his grandfather, they spotted a seal. The grandfather did not succeed in hitting it. Then William took the rifle and shot the seal in the head. The grandfather wanted to skin the seal right away, but William wanted to sail on. Just as they passed a big iceberg, William spotted another seal. He also shot this seal. It is a big day when you shoot your very first seal. William did not only shoot one, but two seals.

The day after William's big catch, he was celebrated at his grandparents' house. The whole family and all their friends came to the party. But William could not eat very much, because he had two loose milk teeth. But all the guests enjoyed the food.

Did you know? The Greenland seal's newborn pup has a pure white fur that is very coveted. That is why the young pups were killed in the past on the breeding fields. This kind of hunting has stopped and the amount of seals has since then increased considerably.

It lives in the ocean and by the coast. The young seal is called "blue side", the adult is called "black side". It can become up to 190 cm long. It can weigh up to 140 kg.&nbsp; When it is 4-6 years old, it can bear one pup annually. The gestation period lasts for 11-12 months. It can become up to 30 years old.
