Oldest Level - A 22 rifle in the shopping trolley

This model was developed by the French economist Jean Fourastié in the 1950s and it shows the development of a society, divided into three different sectors. The primary sector: extraction of raw materials, hunting, fishing, farming. The secondary sector: industry, processing raw materials. The tertiary sector: transport, administration, trade, service. Fourastié thought that a society would develop from having the greatest part of the labour force occupied in the primary sector to having it occupied in the tertiary sector instead. One of the reasons would be that farming and fishing would become automated. The secondary sector, which is focused on processing raw materials, would be almost the same, because the need to operate the machinery would remain unchanged.

How can you use the three-sector model on sealhunting?

This is what we are. We are hunters...a hunter society and when I go sailing, the first thing I think of is to bring my rifle. So when we sail out and meet a seal, we shoot it or try to shoot it. When it is dead we skin it and bring it onto a rock some place and sit and eat the seal. We enjoy ourselves on the way home. Maybe we catch 10 codfish and some redfish and bring them home and fillet them and put them in the freezer. So it is all about hunting and fishing. It is part of everyday life here, it is absolutely natural. It is something that we have grown up with since we were children. It is the Greenlandic way of life. - Malik from the podcast

Here is an example of how you can understand Fourastié's model: The primary sector: the wheat is harvested from the field The secondary sector: the wheat is ground into flour in the factory The tertiary sector: the flour is promoted in advertisements and it is transported to the shops where it is sold.

In Greenland a lot of halibut is being caught. Part of it is eaten in Greenland, part of it is exported to other countries. Use Fourastié's model with the halibut as an example instead of wheat. You must show the halibut's voyage from the sea to the shop.
