REFLECTIONS
ON TEACHING – SENIOR PHASE TEACHING

During my teaching experience, I noticed
these weaknesses. I reflect on my lessons but still fail to incorporate the
reflections in future lesson plans. I see this as a hindrance to development of
my practice. I still need to work on doing introductions which capture the
learners’ attention and cater for all types of learners in the classroom. The
arrangement of furniture and physical space also still needs to be designed
well in advance and taken into consideration when I am designing my lesson
plans. I need to work on my time management or rather break down lessons into
smaller manageable tasks which can be done and finished during the allocated
lesson time.
Lay out rules and stick to them to avoid
any loss of contact time. If using discussion or group work as a teaching
strategy, I really need to work on being consistent in the ground rules by
using positive reinforcement. Although the learners acknowledge my presence, I
still do not command a strong presence, therefore making it difficult for me to
focus on establishing a conducive learning environment. However, I still do not
own the class. I still lack total control over learner behaviour so that all
tasks are completed.

Strengths

During my teaching experience, I have
learnt to identify learners with learning barriers and how to accommodate them
in the physical space of the classroom as well as accommodating such barriers
in my lesson plans and assessments.
I can boast in my subject knowledge. I
could confidently answer all the subject related queries from my learners. I
can also boast in my excellent use of available resources as well as creating
some in the event of the ones I have malfunctioning or, for instance, in the event
of load shedding. I have mastered the skill of having both electronic and
physical resources.
During my teaching experience, I have
developed skills of setting papers and assessments which meet the lesson or
topic objectives as well as cater for all groups of learners. I have learnt to
make use of the blooms taxonomy and making sure that every learner achieves the
required minimum.
I pride myself in having control over
learner behaviour. This emanates from my extensive subject knowledge. As a
result, tasks get completed and the lesson is paced to optimise learning in a
mutually respectful space.
I now possess the skill of
differentiation of learners and allowing learners to assist each other within
groups or according to the way they sit. I have also mastered the art of
assisting learners, making lessons interactive as well as celebrating learners.

REFLECTIONS ON TEACHING – FET PHASE TEACHING

During my teaching experience, I gained
knowledge on designing lesson plans which demonstrated thoughtful and insightful teaching competencies. I even learnt different methodologies to be applied for a specific lesson. I also learnt how to creatively and meaningful introduce the lesson in a way that would keep learners engaged and motivated. I learnt the importance of discussing previous concepts linked to the current lesson. I learnt how to make use of technology in a way that made the lesson more interactive, for example, using the projector to display different types of businesses and allowing learners to respond based on what they see. I also learnt to create an exceptionally conducive learning environment where learners
demonstrated a good relationship and respect towards me and amongst themselves.
This helped in a lot in the completion of activities. Due to my differentiation, I could accommodate all learners and I made sure that I was only a facilitator in those lessons. I allowed learners to take responsibility for the own learning and they really loved to the extent that they would actually go an extra mile to complete tasks and ask for more. These learners allowed me to be impartial and show equal attention to them all. The new knowledge which the learners acquired enabled them to ask questions and seek to know more. I really liked this as it
gave me an opportunity to showcase my subject knowledge and in turn make the learners be more and more confident in my teaching and in me.

This group of learners kept me busy and seeking for more knowledge in the subject. They helped me prepare thoroughly for the next lesson, otherwise I was going to look stupid and foolish in front of a group of learners who are inquisitive. I managed to learn time management
and other methods of making the lessons more engaging and interesting. These learners are more mature and I did not struggle that much with classroom management. I could feel respected and therefore was able to command a strong presence in the classroom.

Task 3 - Classroom management
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

Classroom management is how a teacher plans and controls the activities happening in the class. It also involves organising and leading the learners into achieving the set goals or activities set out for the lesson. Classroom management is one of the aspects which creates a positive learning environment/ classroom climate which in turn leads to higher learner motivation and achievement. Louw and Louw (2022). Classroom
management creates an orderly learning environment and ensures that no time is lost trying to put the class in order. It really boosts the morale of the
teacher and makes them feel on top of the game as well as improving respect between teacher and learners. Doyle (1980).
