This chapter of our common ebook sums up the experiences and materials of the coordinating Adolf-Reichwein-School in Lüdenscheid, Germany. Thank you to all particpants - students and teachers - for a great project in difficult times. We were four teams when we started and one when we finished. Thank you, friends.

In March 2020 our world changed! A pandemic had started! Our Erasmus project was badly hit!

We postponed project meetings. We cancelled the project meeting in Molfetta/Italy. We cancelled the project meeting in Dubrovnik/Croatia. We cancelled the project meeting in Lüdenscheid/Germany. We extended the project by one year. We turned to online meetings.

Over two years of continuous online work four teams became one!

And then we showed courage! We wanted to have one last real project meeting! With students and teachers. Finally, in March 2022, we met in person in Strasbourg/France.

The Council of Europe (CoE), based in Strasbourg (France), now covers virtually the entire European continent, with its 46 member countries. Founded on 5 May 1949 by 10 countries, the Council of Europe seeks to develop throughout Europe common and democratic principles based on the European Convention on Human Rights and other reference texts on the protection of individuals.

This year, ERASMUS+ could, once again, be resumed physically, but these students were already enrolled in university. So, the coordinators, Mrs. Rosa Monteiro and Mrs. Isabel Le Gué, had to pick new ones to fill the other students’ roles.&nbsp; So we thank those who preceded us for leaving us with such informational and useful materials that reflect their dedication to the project, which has allowed us to follow their lead and make justice to all the hard work they put in before they left.&nbsp;

Sabino Maenza: The story of Alidad Shiri I was born in Afghanistan. Up until the age of ten, ours was a quiet life.I went to school, we travelled. My father was a law graduate, a public official and a political leader. He always moved with two bodyguards.&nbsp;One day he was killed in an attack by the Taliban who had put a mine on his way. Six months later&nbsp;I lost my mother, my little sister and my grandmother. It can be said that I was born and raised during the war. Every second of my life I&nbsp;was in danger, nevertheless I tried to survive, dreaming of a different future. I&nbsp;didn't go to school for a year. But we could no longer live in Afghanistan. It was a very difficult time under the Taliban.

The European Parliament is an important forum for political debate and decision-making at the EU level. The Members of the European Parliament are directly elected by voters in all Member States to represent people’s interests with regard to EU law-making and to make sure other EU institutions are working democratically.

2020 - 2022: Two years of online work! We experienced the pandemic together in our schools, towns, countries.....and we talked about our worries and hopes which helped a little. We worked together on twin space and via Zoom.

Numerous teachers-only-meetings were necessary to prepare the online conferences with students from our four 4 countries. And we had serious decisions to take on how to save our Erasmus project in corona times.

I also drank sea water because thirst was so great. We finally arrived in Patras in Greece. I did what everyone did. I slipped under a truck and with a backpack strap I tied myself to the axle shaft. I stayed in that position for&nbsp;two days. When, after the journey by ferry&nbsp;I arrived in Italy&nbsp;the truck went fast on the motorway. I cried and cried, especially when water splashed on my face&nbsp;and,&nbsp;even though I asked for help,&nbsp;&nbsp;no one&nbsp;could help me. I got off the truck In Bressanone in Trentino Alto-Adige. I started walking along the motorway when the police stopped me. I didn't speak English, I didn't know Italian, I didn't understand what they were saying to me. In the barracks they identified me and took my&nbsp;prints. Once identified I could not leave Italy. Wherever I went I would have been a stowaway. They put me in a reception centre for unaccompanied minors and I stayed there for two years. I could&nbsp;study. I met so many people who helped me. I received some relief from some volunteers who&nbsp;brought me food or a hot drink at any time, even at night. At times I felt weak, tears that I couldn't even control came down, but I managed to preserve my dignity without ending up in the clutches of drug dealers and criminality. After I&nbsp;became 18 I&nbsp;went to live with the reception centre’s director family.&nbsp;I graduated in Philosophy and wrote for&nbsp;some local newspapers. With the help of my teacher of Italian I wrote a book called “Away from the crazy war”.&nbsp; Even though in Itaky I have become famous and students follow my&nbsp;lectures with great interest now&nbsp;&nbsp;I want to go back to Afghanistan because my roots are there.

- German students from Lüdenscheid presented activities of Lüdenscheid volunteer organisations which provide help and support to migrants and refugees. - Portuguese students from Lisbon dealt with a topic of integrating in a new environment of their new friends who left Nepal with their parents a few years ago and found their new home in Portugal. - Italian students from Molfetta gave a presentation on specific problems of Italian migrants during COVID 19 pandemic, while closing the economy and restricting freedom of movement

Results of our staff training in Lüdenscheid in October 2019: - all participating teachers got to know each other - we learned how to deal with etwinning and twin space - we learned how to create an ebook with bookcreator (Thank you Mrs Vogel!) - we developed concrete plans for the course of our project - we planned the next project meeting in Lisbon in February 2020 - we got to know mobility tool to administer our project

Aims&nbsp;and proceedings of our staff training: This staff training in October 2019 was conducted to introduce teachers of participating schools to the projects ideas and proceeding. Team Germany prepared a 5 day meeting which concentrated on questions like: - What is etwinning and how to use it - Working with twin space - How&nbsp;to create an ebook The rest of the time was spent with planning the project, setting up a timetable for project meetings and procedures how to reach our aims as stated in our application. Socialising and team building activities rounded off this successful first meeting.&nbsp;

About our project: „Living in the age of migration – knocking on people‘s doors – knocking down prejudices“

Our Erasmus-Plus-Project was founded by four teams based in Italy, Portugal, Croatia and Germany. Once the teams had found each other, we decided to deal with the topic of migration, which was back in early 2019 a pressing topic for each country. Team Germany volunteered to coordinate the project. For our 2-year-project we planned a staff training in Germany to start with, followed by 4 projects meetings in each participating country evolving around different aspects of the topic. Our application was approved in summer 2019 and all teachers and students involved started full of enthusiasm.

But nobody expected what was going to happen!

Our seminar topics in Lisbon: - introducing the partner schools&nbsp;and their towns with short presentations as this was the very first meeting with students -&nbsp;working with TwinSpace -&nbsp;creating an eBook - settling of financial and organizational matters (teachers only) - meeting with Portuguese human rights organisations - the history of immigration in the four participating countries - getting to know Lisbon and Portugal as attractive destinations for immigrants

Furthermore, this project gave us the chance to reflect on the migration issue and how privileged we are. It has made us ponder about how we could find solutions to tackle this problem- fully provide them the life refugees deserve and guarantee their safety along with the respect of their human rights. It is most likely that we’ll only manage to fully accomplish this when we become adults and we will wish it could have been done sooner.&nbsp;

And when we came back to Lisbon we decided to make a presentation that described our amazing trip to Strasbourg and what we had learnt for our school and families.

We also read this poem about the new issues refugees face caused by the war in Ukraine.

And we participated in a treasure hunt in the city!

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg is a Catholic cathedral in Strasbourg, Alsace, France. Although considerable parts of it are still in Romanesque architecture, it is widely considered to be among the finest examples of Rayonnant Gothic architecture.&nbsp;

Our visit to Lisbon was the only regular mobility we enjoyed in February 2020. The students stayed with host families, the teachers were accommodated in holiday flats. Our days were full to the brim with project activities. But there was still time for sightseeing and excursions. The social highlight was a party thrown by the Portuguese parents for all the participants of the project. The traditional friendship dinner on our last evening rounded off a fantastic week in a great city with warm-hearted hosts.

This project is an attempt to help to deal with the increasing problem of mass immigration to Europe. Its objectives are the reduction of possible present and future conflicts by furthering the communication between migrants and natives, by increasing tolerance and mutual understanding when the project participants and the interested public get to know the different values and cultures better, by trying to increase the migrant families’ trust in local people and local institutions, and by helping migrant families and schoolchildren to cope with work at school.

The other students also welcomed the Croatian, the German and the Italian students in our country (before quarantine). They made sure to show some of the wonders of Portugal, taking them on a cultural promenade around Lisbon and Sintra, once they had visited school!

Lisbon’s Mobility report: Ciao, hello, olá, bok, hallo; Three days ago we were all strangers, and now we have new memories, new stories and experiences to remember for the rest of our lives. We flight to Lisbon with millions expectations without knowing what&nbsp;our experience would be like. In four days our view of the world changed so much, we grew up and got to know each other&nbsp;sharing a piece of our hearts. During all our visits, such as the one to the Pena Palace and&nbsp;to St. George’s&nbsp;Castle, we had lot of laughs and we learnt about this country. This a short summary of what we lived through, we have&nbsp;written it&nbsp;to share our experience with you. We didn’t know each other but we were linked by the same desire to live deeply this experience, to know new people and discover a new different culture and we found out unexpectedly that those guys weren’t so different from us. The first thing we were interested in was the school system that seemed so different from ours and indeed it was: students change class every hour and they’ve the possibility to have lunch at the school canteen.

The European Parliament is one of two legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union, it adopts European legislation, following a proposal of the European Commission.&nbsp;

You couldn't watch TV, go to the theatre or listen to music. But you couldn't even live there. I was at a crossroads: either I gave in to the constraints of the Taliban to be enlisted with them and then kill those they call infidels, or chose to flee. That's why I escaped with my aunt and her family and took refuge in Pakistan. My uncle had opened an electronics store and I helped him. But it was dangerous for me to be there too. I was the son of a olitical leader. The Taliban could have killed me just for that. So at 12 I started travelling alone and with some money: without any protection, suffering any kind of violence, walking on inaccessible mountain roads, trying to preserve my&nbsp;shoes as a precious treasure. I saw such great inhumanity that I do not wish anyone to meet. It took me 24 days to get to Iran. I took buses, horses, I went on foot. I couldn't take a shower and keep a minimum of dignity. And yet the people around me looked at me strangely and someone put a sign on his inn with the words "No entry for migrants" because for them I stank.&nbsp;I had lice. When I arrived in Iran I worked for 2 years in a factory. But only at night because I had no papers. That was not my life, I dreamed of studying, of becoming a lawyer, of returning to my country. If I had continued to work in that factory I would never have been able to realize my dreams. So one day I gave 900 dollars to a trafficker to get me to Turkey. In this part of the journey I was not alone, we were seven Afghan boys. We walked for days. At one point we were at the top of a mountain. The traffickers asked us for more money to take us to the Valley. But we had already paid. We stayed 7 days on that mountain. I ate grapes and vitamins in tablets, luckily there was water. In the end I got tired and went down alone. It took me three months to get to Istanbul but my journey had to go on. I dreamed of Great Britain. I could pay $ 500 to go on a dinghy&nbsp;journey&nbsp;to Greece. Or $ 1500 to go by boat. I had never seen the sea. I didn't know how to swim. If I had fallen into the water or the smugglers had thrown me into them&nbsp;I would surely have died. The alternative was to pay $ 3500 and do the whole journey&nbsp;by&nbsp;van. There were 40 of us and we walked for days.There were also two African women with us. One night their water was stolen, they were exhausted, they couldn't take it anymore. We left them on the street. I still think of them after 13 years.

In February 2020 we had our first real project meeting with studetns in LIsbon. Three teachers and four students from Lüdenscheid travelled in stormy weather to Lisbon. What a beautiful place!!

On our second day we visited the European Council of Europe

The Council of Europe is an international organisation founded in the wake of World War II to uphold human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe. Founded in 1949, it has 46 member states.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) is a regional human rights judicial body based in Strasbourg, created under the auspices of the Council of Europe. The Court began operating in 1959 and has delivered more than 10,000 judgments regarding alleged violations of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The first Portuguese group and their adventure!

The Portuguese ERASMUS+ journey started back in 2019, when a group of students that were in the 11th and 12th grade decided to enroll in this project. They worked their hardest, gathering all the information and creating materials to be shared among the other students in this project and later on, with the rest of the school community, so that everyone around them could learn about the important topics they discussed with their fellow project members. They made sure to capture the whole picture. They learned about the migrant community in our country, studied the diversity of Portugal and how it was represented in our school, including the stories of Sharad Poudel and Riya Upreti, both former Nepalese students that enriched our community with their life stories of hardship and thrived to get more informed about this current issue, always driven by the desire to help someone out there.  However, the pandemic changed their future perspectives. Unfortunately, the project could no longer be developed physically, since there were restrictions on travelling, and had to be continued virtually.

&nbsp;They entered one by one; they were numerous&nbsp;everyone had&nbsp;to sign-in at a reception desk; it seemed to me that, in spite all the members of the delegation&nbsp;had entered, there was no sign of Bright. I turned my back to&nbsp;the entrance of the tent when I suddenly heard a familiar voice. It was his voice. The voice of the man who I was hopelessly in love with and that echoed in my ears every night. I turned and saw him. He was there, with so much&nbsp;luggage. He was&nbsp;shabbily dressed even though his clothes certainly&nbsp;suited him better&nbsp;than the ones he was wearing when we crossed the sea. He hadn’t&nbsp;changed at all, not the slightest change did he show, as if&nbsp;not even one day&nbsp;had gone by since we last met, he&nbsp;was exactly&nbsp;as I remembered him, , with that light of hope in his eyes, the same light that convinced me to leave Nigeria with him to arrive in Italy. I waited&nbsp;him to show his personal&nbsp;data and rushed to him not caring about anyone&nbsp;who was looking at me. I hugged him very hard,&nbsp;he jumped on me and we kissed each other.&nbsp;

Travelling as young adults/teenagers to Strasbourg, coming out of our comfort zone, being given the opportunity to learn about the European Union has made us more aware as global citizens, enabled us to understand how everything works around international politics and how to deal with this enormous quantity of people who need our help to fulfil their right to have a worthy life.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 2015 many refugees arrived in Lüdenscheid and in our school. We established so-called GoIN-classes, which aimed at teaching refugee children German and integrate them sucessfully in our school and society.

It was a kiss full of passion, nostalgia, happiness but above all love; that love that had kept us tied up for so long, that had never vanished and that gave birth to our child. I could finally say that I was happy and safe, with Bright and the child away from any&nbsp;war. &nbsp; After we met we decided to look for a house of our own, but first had to do the so-called "big move" that is&nbsp;getting&nbsp;married. So thanks to the Mayor we were able to celebrate&nbsp;our civil marriage ceremony&nbsp;and live a dream that had seemed otherwise impossible.

The Portuguees students told&nbsp;us lots of curiosities about the city: they showed us the old Castle where we had a beautiful view of the whole&nbsp;city and they made us try typical dishes like Codfish. When we went around the city we saw a typical sardine store with original painted boxes, one for each year. We knew about another symbol of Lisbon: the typical old tram that we used to catch to go to the center. On the last day we went out all together around Bairro Alto&nbsp;where we had fun and we had the possibility to discover how teenagers spend their free time. We could see the city in the night, full of people, lights and music. At the end of this experience we have made more friends than we had on the first day and when we&nbsp;think about that this period&nbsp;we feel nostalgic fot it&nbsp;and we can’t see the time when we will know&nbsp;who will come here in Molfetta. Started in Lisbon by&nbsp;Group&nbsp;6 of&nbsp;students and finished during the coronavirus pandemic&nbsp;through distance work by&nbsp;the Italian students who took part in Lisbon’s meeting, Alessio Messina,&nbsp;Pierluigi De Palo,&nbsp;Elisabetta Annese and&nbsp;Sofia Natalicchio.

LAVORI PER LISBONA Claudia Ventura: short story I was here in this migrants’&nbsp;reception centre of a small Italian town. I didn't know anyone. They were all kind but they treated me as if I were made of porcelain, as if I could shatter from moment to moment at the slightest touch. But it wasn't like that. They did not know that my heart was now divided into many small pieces that could no longer be joined again because they had taken away what kept them together. Bright had been taken away from me. I was alone with our little boy of just 5 and a half years in this shelter for illegal immigrants from all over North Africa. I spent my nights here thinking about all the happy moments I&nbsp;had spent with him and every hour that passed I realized that I was missing him more and more. One morning, however, a volunteer told me about the possibility of a project that could bring me back to Bright. At that point I screamed with joy and waited for nothing but the moment when the centre director&nbsp;would take me back to him. But the days, weeks, months passed and I still didn't hear about him. I seemed to go crazy, I had completely lost any hope to see him again&nbsp;when one morning I was unexpectedly awakened by a volunteer who told me a wonderful piece of news: all the migrants&nbsp;from&nbsp;the&nbsp;reception centre of&nbsp;Taranto would arrive in Molfetta, the small town where I was, thanks to the will of its&nbsp;Municipality. So it was that about a week later the guests arrived and I was so excited that I was bursting with joy from every pore and infecting every person next to me with my smile.

In conclusion, these Erasmus+ projects were extremely helpful on raising awareness on the migration issue. We firmly believe we have a moral obligation to act, and acting begins with gaining conscience and sensitizing everyone. Education is the basis to evolve.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Every day, thousands of refugees are forced to leave their countries to escape from wars, natural disasters, and other unfortunate circumstances in hope for a better life. Our continent has various resources and the European Union is trying to improve their lives by supporting the development of effective integration strategies and providing education through various projects especially directed to migrants.&nbsp;

On one of the many online conferences we teachers decided to stage a last real project meeting, where every team was able to travel. We picked Straßbourg with its many European institutions as destination. Corona was still there somehow but this time we did not want to step back.....

The European capital and the capital of Alsace, Strasbourg exudes youthfulness and energy. It lies 2.5 miles (4 km) west of the Rhine River on the Franco-German frontier.
