This book is a final product of an eTwinning project. It was made by a group of students of Stjepan Ivičević Elementary School from Makarska, Croatia.

Walking around Makarska

Makarska is one of the oldest towns of the eastern Croatian Adriatic. Archaeological finds provide proof of continuous human settlement going back as far as 6000&nbsp;BC. The settlement on the small peninsula of Saint Peter was founded around 2500&nbsp;BC and evolved into the Phoenician colony of&nbsp;Mukron&nbsp;around 1200&nbsp;BC. It was possible to investigate 53 graves. On the eastern side of the plateau, the foundations of the Augustinian monks' monastery from the second half of the 15th century were discovered.

Kalelarga is one of the most famous streets in Makarska. There are so many famous restaurants, bars and cafes. That street leads to Kacic Square, the main square in Makarska. Kalelarga was built in Baroque times. Since 1994 the Makarska feast has been held every year. It is called the Night of Kalelarga which attracts more and more visitors every year.

The stone pyramid - obelisk in Makarska better known as the "Napoleon monument" is located in the far western part of the city on the south side of the highway. It is located next to the road on the edge of the pine forest.

The pyramid was built in 1808 during the French administration in Dalmatia, in honor of Marshal Marmont. It was originally located in front of the Franciscan monastery in Makaraska. It was built from white stone from Brac by stonemasons Antun and Ivan Štambuk.

On Kačić Square in Makarska, a late Baroque fountain of rectangular shape was erected in 1775. 

 The construction was carried out by master Iseppo Bisazzo. The fountain was reconstructed in 1990.

The city fountain from 1755. with the oldest stone coat-of-arms of Makarska and the coat-of-arms of the proveditor A. B. Balby.

There is an inscription on the stone beam above the opening, and on the side of it are two coats of arms, one of which is the oldest coat of arms of the city of Makarska.

It was opened in 2020. Enjoying a unique view of Makarska and surrounding places, the coast, and islands from a glass platform at more than 1000 meters above sea level, is one of the unique feelings. Skywalk is also an ideal destination for filming, photography and enjoying the sunsets. The monument was made in 1974 as a memorial center for all veterans who died in World War from Makarska. Today, that place has become one of the most beautiful stages where international music festivals are held every summer.

St. Peter's Church was built in the 5th century on the peninsula of St. Peter, as a single-nave Gothic church, and was rebuilt in the Baroque era. In January 1962, the church was damaged by an earthquake and was later demolished, and a facsimile was rebuilt in 1992. This place is popular among couples in love and it is a very popular wedding site. Very romantic, isn't it?

 The observatory and Astro Park are unique, scientific and tourist attractions in the city. There one can take part in various programs and projects and kids can have fun in a nearby park.

Monument to the swimmer "Bonaca". The monument was erected in 2006 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of tourism in Makarska. It is the work of sculptor Ivica Šoda-Cotić. In a combination of marble and bronze, it shows a tourist enjoying the sea. The monument is located in front of the City Museum.

The Veliki Kaštel Interpretation Centre in Kotišina is a place for the presentation of this cultural and natural heritage. Tourists can experience interactive materials using VR.  There is also a stage in front of St. Ante’s church, and educational trails. You can enjoy hiking tours and hiking and biking trails from the center of Makarska to Kotišina.

It is located on the coastal slopes of the Biokovo mountain above the village of Kotišina, at an altitude of 350 to 500 meters and is partly located in the Biokovo Nature Park. The garden was founded by Dr. Friar Jure Radić (1920 – 1990), Franciscan and scientist.

The monument is 3.60 meters high and weighs 900 kg. It is the work of sculptor Tomislav Kršnjavi, who made the monument in plaster and cast it in bronze at the Ujević Foundry. The plinth around the monument is integrated into the surroundings of the St. Peter peninsula. The monument to St. Peter was officially opened to the public on Monday, April 13, 2009.

Couples in love, but also those with broken hearts, hang padlocks on the chains of the protective fence at St Peter peninsula. It's an old Chinese custom to make love eternal. In a symbolic act, love is locked with a padlock hung on a chain, and the key is thrown into the sea. Maybe you can make your love last forever and lock it in Makarska?

The Malacological Museum of the Franciscan Monastery in Makarska was opened to the public on April 30, 1963 in the old part of the Franciscan Monastery, which is a protected cultural monument. It contains more than 3,000 specimens of exposed shells. In the museum, you can see not only shells from the Adriatic Sea, but also numerous species from tropical and subtropical seas, which have the most attractive colors and shapes among all shells. It was founded by friar Jure Radić.

Makarska is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Croatian coast that attracts visitors with its natural features and climate, rich tourist offers, and hospitable hosts.&nbsp;

This small town is located in&nbsp;Dalmatia, about 60 km south of the city of&nbsp;Split.&nbsp;Makarska is located&nbsp;on a horseshoe-shaped bay, under the spectacular Biokovo mountain. It is perfectly developed around a natural harbor shielded by the&nbsp;peninsula of St. Peter.&nbsp;

Franjo Tuđman was the first president of Croatia. His statue was built in 2016. The whole statue is 4,8 meters tall. Its located in Makarska next to the city beach. He was also a Croatian politician and historian.

You can come to visit Biokovo Nature Park by car, minibus, motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot. From the park’s reception entrance (at 365 m a.s.l.) to the highest peak of Biokovo – Sv. Jure (1762 m a.s.l.) one travels along the Biokovo Road, which is the highest road in the Republic of Croatia. It is 23 km long. No matter you visit it in summer or in winter, the feeling is astonishing.

Tin Ujević Square is a small square in the heart of Makarska, next to the waterfront. There you can find small restaurants and shops.

Tin Ujević was a famous Croatian writer, that meant a lot to the Croatian language and culture. The statue was made by Tomislav Kršnjavi.

The breakwater is next to Osejava Beach.It was built in 2016. On the inside, there are boats parked all along the waterfront, and on the outside there are stones. There is a lighthouse at the end of it.

Makarska Riva is something extraordinary, so we warmly recommend you take a walk around the waterfront every time you visit Makarska.&nbsp; No matter summer or winter, the promenade near the sea offers a beautiful view of the sea and a morning coffee with a sea view is the best thing ever.

It is located near the waterfront, in the sports center, and it is open to visitors every day in the morning during the summer months. In it, visitors can get publicity material and information about the Park, learn about the geological past of Biokovo based on the geological column, and see photos of flora and fauna. If you visit the center you can experience an earthquake alive!

It houses the City's multi-purpose sports hall and swimming pool. In addition to the sports hall and swimming pool, within this facility, there is also a gym, a martial arts hall, an automatic bowling alley with 4 lanes, and changing rooms with showers..This place is a living heart of the city, and a favourite place of all generations

Saint Mark's Church is located at the top of Kačić square. It was built in the Baroque style. The Construction began in 1700 on the initiative of Makarska bishop Nikola Bijanković. The facade faces southwest, and the bell tower can be seen from all over the city. On the right side is the altar with the bones of St. Klement, the patron saint of Makarska. 

Kačić Square is the main square in Makarska. This square is a favourite place for concerts and cultural events all year long.

Osejava Beach is located in the southeast of Makarska, behind the breakwater. It is one of the approaches to the peninsula, which is also called Osejava. The peninsula is also the largest city park where you can relax among pine trees, near the crystal blue sea. Here people tend to enjoy a picnic on the weekends, running, and cycling. The park itself is riddled with many small and large tracks. Osejava Beach is the smallest beach in Makarska. 

Monument to a "seagull"

It is located on Makarska Riva. It is made of bronze, 205 cm high. The sculpture represents a conqueror of women (known as “seagulls”) Jura and a foreign tourist. It was made by sculptor Nikola Šanjek. It was built in honor of all the tourists who visited Makarska.

It is located on the 1st floor of the Baroque Tonoli Palace, built in the second half of the 18th century.  The museum's collections enabled the creation of a permanent collection of exhibited exhibits: collections of archaeology, ethnology, numismatics, cultural-historical, photographs, postcards, posters, and maps. The Makarska City Museum has a library fund with more than 7,000 items, including prospectuses and newspapers.

Andrija Kačić Miošić (Brist near Makarska, April 17, 1704 – Zaostrog, December 12, 1760) was a Croatian folk poet and friar.

 His book Conversation of the Pleasant People of Slovenia, from 1756, is one of the most valuable works of Croatian literature of the 18th century. The monument was made by Ivan Rendić in 1889.
