Maths This term we have learned about positive and negative X,Y co-ordinates.&nbsp; We used our new knowledge to design our own ‘Battleships’ type game.&nbsp; We also spent time studying angles and using protractors to measure degrees.

Northcott have had a fantastic first half of the summer term, It has been jam packed with exciting learning!

Our project has been Sow, Grow and Farm. Northcott have been learning about growing plants, different types of farming and the Amazon rainforest. They have been studying different artists, including Henry Rousseau, and have been attempting to imitate their style. They have also been having a go at drawing still life. They have been learning about the World War 2&nbsp;‘Dig for Victory’ campaign and have been creating posters in a similar style.

Our biggest event of the year, our school summer fair is only around the corner. As you can see from the poster, we have lots planned for the 16th of June so do pop the date in your diary and join us for an afternoon of fun. In preparation for this, we will be holding an own clothes day on the 9th June. On this day the children can wear own clothes in return for a gift for our tombola stalls, this could be a teddy, a bottle of drink or some chocolate / sweets. 

Our house captains held a captivating chess competition and we finally have our chess champion! A big well done to our dedicated house captains - who would have known a chess tournament would run for so long!

Looking ahead our house captains will be planning for our sports day and starting to train up our new house captains for September.

Bude Primary Academy Junior's Half Termly Celebration Bulletin

Summer Term 1 - Monday 17th April to Friday 26th May 

We have all been very busy learning bees in Poppy Class this recently glorious fine-weather term…

Under the banner of our topic of ‘How does it grow?’ we have created tasty ‘Cress Heads’ that we will use in future weeks to create delicious but smelly egg and cress sandwiches!&nbsp; In addition, we are carefully nurturing our sunflowers that we hope will flourish in our current much-welcome sunshine. Furthermore, we have sown radish seeds which we hope will give us an extra tasty crunch to our salads in future weeks.

This half-term obviously saw the children completing their SATs. We don’t know their results yet but we were so, so proud of the way they conducted themselves throughout the week.

Made life size skeletons. We got into groups and made life size skeletons along with learning about the importance of them and our internal organs. We followed up by using our magical (see inside your body) T-Shirt!

Falcon Texts We all wrote some amazing fact pages in English all about the fascinating Peregrine Falcon.

On the penultimate day of the half-term we put on our class assembly for our parents. The main part of this was the performance of our class play, Icaridiculous, which we wrote ourselves. We also looked back over the year and even got some parents up to have a go at times-table shootout! Tillie: "I think we were really loud and I think all the parents loved it!" Omar: "I loved bossing the guards around (as King Minos)!"

Thanks to our ‘webbed-links’ to the ‘Bude Mummy Duck Society’, I have arranged for a Mummy duck to nest in one of our raised beds within Poppy Class - we’ll look after her and her eggs until Sue Clancy’s ‘Born to be Wild’ rescue mission!

With many thanks to you all who shopped for us at the Co-op, the current dry weather has enabled us to use our new nest swing and mini trampoline (more photos!)&nbsp; Both have been frequently used by pupils and staff alike! With many further thanks to the Co-op, we have received several new pedal bikes to bolster our balance bike collection.&nbsp; The pedal bikes were expertly put together for us by Mr McGee for which we are all very grateful.

As always, I must mention our superb Poppy Class staff team and equally amazing parents.&nbsp; Last, but by no means least, a huge thank you to all our Year 6 ‘apprentice’ TAs who bring with them to Poppy Class their natural engagement and playfulness that is of huge benefit to us all.

Our wonderful BPA PTA have been busy planning lots of lovely, fundraising events for the summer term. Today our famous, summer ice lolly sales have begun, with 50% of the profits being donated to a local charity each week. These sales were hugely successful last year, even more so in the sunshine!

Dia de los Muertos

We have had an incredible term. Let’s talk about trips first - from our fabulous trip to Newquay Zoo and Castle An Dinas, to our jaunt down to the beach to look at the RNLI station and remind ourselves of some of our rock learning, our learning, experiences and behaviour have all been exemplary. 

The children have enjoyed our sentence stacking, writing 'The Journey' story. We also all loved our class book 'Kensuki’s Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo.

We got around to covering our Pavilions we made in DT last term.&nbsp; They looked great and they were all very creative – no two alike!

We had a visit from an author, Rob Pudner, the children described him as funny, entertaining, exciting, enthusiastic and delightful! We also had a visit from an Olympic Rower who was very inspiring and got the children involved in her sport – as much as you can on dry land!

Another half term filled with outstanding learning. We can’t believe we are at the end. The children have gone above and beyond in all their efforts, achieved so much and we are so incredibly proud. Our favourite learning this half term has been our art project linked to Hola Mexico. Being creative and getting messy has brought calm and laughter to what has been a challenging time for some of the children. ‘It might be a surprise to hear, but I found the SATs fun.’ Niall ‘I found it fun to experience the caves at Adventure International.’ Tristan ‘I enjoyed the canoe.’ Matt ‘I loved the canoeing at Adventure International because our coach let us jump in at the end.’ Brody ‘This might sound insane , but I enjoyed SATs more than normal learning.’ Jonty ‘I really enjoyed the Ice-cream trip even though I got my lip stuck to my lolly.’ Jonty ‘I really enjoyed the behind the scenes workshop for Star Wars as it inspired me.’ Ruan ‘I liked the workshop as I got to see how CGI worked.’ Cayden ‘I really enjoyed canoeing even though we capsized’ Myla ‘The climbing area in the caves was really fun.’ Theo It’s hard to believe we are almost at the end of our year 6 journey.

Wow, what a wonderful time had by all this term. We have welcomed some new pupils - it's so nice to have some new faces. We’ve had lots of fun dressing up, Karina was turned into ‘Elma the elephant’ by the children, made cress men,&nbsp;played on the trim trail and celebrated King Charles' coronation. Mr Hodge also kindly treated the children to some chocolate milk shake, thank you!.

Life Cycles We started the term by dissecting flowers to look at their reproductive parts.&nbsp; Over the following weeks we then compared the life cycles of flowers, butterflies, and birds. We also prepared the beds in school and planted sunflowers and peas.

PE Mr. Brown has been preparing the children for their last sports day at Bude Primary.

We also had an amazing two days at Bude Adventure.

We are looking forward to sharing their final half-term at Bude Primary, especially the residential in Bristol. 

Cartoon drawing We had a fantastic online workshop with James Parsons from Crazy Comic Club who shared ideas and drawing techniques with the children.

History of Cornwall

The class are thoroughly enjoying our Curriculum Project Invaders &nbsp;and many have been inspired to complete extra work at home.&nbsp; In art, we have been looking at the Celtic patterns of the Anglo Saxons and designing our own cross.

In Science, we have been learning about the properties of different materials and there have been some interesting oracy conversations around which are solids, liquids or gases.&nbsp; We have some excellent conversationalists in class and we love to listen to their ideas and arguments that they put forwards.

So, last half term coming up.&nbsp; Who can believe that the year is almost at and end?&nbsp; We certainly cannot.

Woodland session- fire lighting and nettle tea We took part in a history flashback this half term. We went into the woods and learnt how to make fire and brew nettle tea just like they did in prehistoric times.

Hola Mexico The children have researched information on Mexico and looked at the festival ‘Day Of The Dead’. They also made their own masks.

English The children have been writing a continuation of an adventure story as part of their assessed written work.

The first half of the Summer term has seen Crackington Class dive into our new topic: Sow, Grow and Farm! We’ve been learning all about the different types of farming that can be found around the world, and why the climate of these areas impacts the type of crops grown. This has included growing our own seeds – we’re looking forward to seeing who wins our sunflower-growing competition! We’ve also studied the rainforest art of Henri Rousseau, and have looked at various lifecycles in Science. Taylor: This has been super-duper fun: I’ve been really enjoying learning about lifecycles in Science. Afrin: "I loved doing the artwork based on Henri Rousseau" Freddie: "I loved finding out about the Dig For Victory campaign during World War 2 and making our own posters"

Computing- branching data base We have had lots of fun learning how to create branching data-bases. We’ve learnt how to create questions that have a yes or no answer.

Maths- telling the time We’ve found this a little tricky! Please continue to help us with this at home.

Maths Following SATs Wanson have been working on a ‘Bakery’ project where they have looked a variety of maths related problems including ratio, profit and loss and packaging.

As part of the Bude Literary Festival the children had a brilliant workshop with the author John Hegley.

Unfortunately, the Coronation Picnic was rained off outside but we made the best of it in the hall, sitting on the floor! We have had fun doing some active maths lessons which, as the name suggests, involves being active whilst doing maths.&nbsp; The children did really well and cooperated brilliantly together.

As another busy half term of learning comes to end, here are just a snippet of the wonderful things Summerleaze have been up to.

In English, we have written an advert for a re-useable pasta product and we are currently writing a story based upon the book Journey by Aaron Becker.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We have also enjoyed ‘Active Learning’, revising our knowledge and understanding of homophones.&nbsp;

The class have been really impressing us in maths these last two weeks: reading time from an analogue clock and converting to digital time.&nbsp; Not an easy skill to learn but resilience has been strong.&nbsp; Again, the class enjoyed some active learning, revising place value which required collaboration and communication skills to succeed.

In PE we have been enjoying the opportunity to get out on the field in the drier weather and participate in a variety of athletics events.

In maths, Northcott have been learning all about coordinates, angles and shapes. In English they have been writing reports about animals and writing their own adventure stories.

Teach Active

Delicious tart making in DT! We’ve been learning about how to eat healthily and seasonally.

Do you like… Funny food mash ups! The children created their own funny picture books inspired by ‘Do you like ketchup on your cornflakes? by Nick Sharratt.

Athlete Visit

On Thursday 27th April, we invited Annie Vernon into school to lead aspirational assemblies for all year groups and some active workshops. The children learnt about Annie's journey and what it took to become a two-time World Champion rower a successful silver medallist at the 2008 Olympics. Annie was born in Truro, Cornwall and went to school in St Minever so it was lovely for the children to meet someone who has achieved such greatness who comes from our wonderful county of Cornwall.&nbsp;

In other learning we’ve been equally busy. English has seen a study of non-chronological reports: our shared writing was based on Emperor penguins and we used this as a model for our independent writing, which focused on an animal of our own choice. We’re now starting a new topic based around the Katherine Rundell novel ‘The Explorer’. In Maths, we’ve been busy looking at various types of measurements and how to convert between them, while maintaining our focus on arithmetic. Siena: "I really enjoyed creating the non-chronological reports on Google Slides, especially the animations" Ben: "I loved doing the netball tournament!" Joe: "It’s been really fun starting our Explorer writing topic"

Bude literary festival

This half term, Bude Juniors were lucky enough to take part in the Bude Literary festival. Year 3 and 4 enjoyed the company of Rob Pudner for an afternoon, he shared books and stories from his own childhood and the children had fun joining in with his games. Year 5 took part in an online comic book workshop with James Parsons; we were really impressed with their ideas and designs. Year 5 and 6 together had a secrets behind the scenes workshop with Susan Luciani. The children were captivated and left completely inspired. To round it off, Year 6 also had a hilarious workshop with John Hegley. Thank you to the Literary festival for providing these wonderful experiences for our pupils.

In our project and science, we have been learning about healthy eating and what different animals, as well as humans eat. We’ve learnt all about vertebrates and invertebrates and had some very close looks at exoskeletons and bones using the microscopes. We’ve designed and baked tarts, learning all about the different climates around the world and we’ve even been growing beans, investigating what plants need to grow. 

Welcome to the summer one edition of The Splash. We've had a wonderfully full half term, jam-packed with learning experiences. The Splash really showcases the highlights from across the school, sometimes it's hard to believe everything featured here is from just 6 weeks. Some of the highlights are taking part in the Bude Literary Festival, the wide range of school trips, our Wake and Shake assemblies on a Friday morning (lots of smiles and laughter during these!) and evidence of oracy continuing to develop such as in Crackington's class assembly. We are so very lucky to have such fabulous children, families and staff here at Bude Juniors. What a wonderful community we are. We would like to wish you a restful, sun-filled half term and look forward to welcoming you back on Tuesday 6th&nbsp;June.&nbsp;

In English, we have written an amazing non-chronological report about peregrine falcons – what amazing birds! Currently, we’re writing a funny story about a boy who likes to eat books! 

In maths, we’ve been telling the time, learning number of days, hours and minutes in months and years and learning about am and pm! Mrs Stickney has said we need to keep practising at home at all different times of the day, so you can definitely help with this! …What time is bedtime…and what time is it now?
