Project Our project this half term has been Alchemy Island. This project contained geography (coordinates and contour lines), science (properties of materials, reversible and irreversible changes and the water cycle) and music making (using ‘Garage band’ to compose a soundtrack to an Alchemy Island video game). All the pupils loved it and enjoyed this topic.

Maths We have been learning how to use written methods to add and subtract 4 digit numbers with more than 1 exchange.

“ I enjoyed subtracting because it’s fun and made my brain work hard.” “ Exchanges were a bit tricky, but once I got the hang of it, it was quite fun” “I enjoyed the column additions because it makes adding easier to do.”

Bude At War Towards the start of the term Year Six had the opportunity to take part in the Bude At War activities. It was a fantastic day where they experienced talks/drama on a variety of aspects of the Second World War including evacuation, rationing and spying. They also had a talk about the incredible Enigma machine.

English In English we have written a fantasy story based around the short film, ‘Mr Morris Lessmore and the Fantastic Flying Books’, as well as a poem based around ‘The Malfeasance’. Our VIPERs sessions have included looking at extracts from ‘Fantastic Beasts and where to find them’.

Science The class have been learning about electricity in science, where is comes from and how to be safe when using electricity.&nbsp; They have been investigating and making circuits, ready for DT, when they will be designing and making a torch.

Dance In dance, we have been investigating the movements of animals that live in the rainforest.&nbsp; The children have choreographed a range of movements, which they have developed into a sequence of movements to create a dance.&nbsp;

Mr Clarke, Mr Healey and Trina have been very impressed with the children’s resilience, independence and collaboration skills, keep it up everyone!

We have had a very busy and exciting first half term settling back into Poppy class! We welcomed a new friend into our class and some new adults too. We’ve worked really hard on our communication skills and Makaton, as well as our sharing and turn taking in play.

Cooking Our weekly cooking sessions have been so much fun! We have made jam sandwiches, peach treats and noodles. We really enjoy practising our cutting skills, making sure that we are holding the item carefully and using the knives safely. Most of all, we like exploring and tasting the food we have prepared together!

A fab, fun start to the year. The children have taken part in an enormous amount of learning and all have achieved and progressed. We are seeing improved resilience and independence as we prepare them for secondary school life and I am very proud to be their teacher. We look forward to them returning after half term ready to take on the next steps. Here are some highlights:

Messy maths We have explored lots of practical and messy maths this half term! We have all been working on our understanding of place value. For some of us this includes exploring numbers 0 – 5 and beyond, others have been working with numbers up to 99 and even in the hundreds!

English We have shared many different books this half term but a particular favourite was Beegu, a story about a lost alien on Earth. We listened carefully to the story and used the illustrations to explore emotions. We talked about different friendships and identified the qualities of good friends. We also designed and made our very own friend for Beegu to keep her company on earth!

Flambards As part of our topic we had an epic day at Flambards! The ‘Britain In The Blitz’ inter-active walk-through exhibition was a fantastic way for the children to get an insight into the Blitz.

Exploration Every week we take a trip to the woods for a story and some exploration. We loved bug hunting after reading Superworm and we found some very interesting insects hiding in the woods! Some of us were very brave and held these insects, the rest of us were happy looking at them from a distance!

The children who helped with last years planting were rewarded with a break time treat. Fresh baked potatoes! Delicious!

Computing Computer networks communicate with each other by sending data packets as messages.&nbsp; Each message must have an accurate ‘To address’ and ‘From address’.&nbsp; We mimicked 2 computer networks communicating with each other. Five of our messages got lost in the system as they were not properly addressed.&nbsp; Only one message was accurately delivered between networks.

School Council

Welcome to our new School Council! The School Council provides opportunities for the children's voices to be heard when discussing School development. They will be thinking of, and arranging great fundraising events for our School and we are very excited for their first weekly meeting after the half term!

House Captains

We are please to announce our new house captains for this year. They will work together to plan house events through the year, collate the house points each week and cheer on their team at sporting events. House captains are one of the many leadership roles we have here at Bude Juniors. We know our new house captains will be fantastic this year!&nbsp;

What a great start to our time at the Juniors we have had in Wanson! 

English In English, we began by writing some fabulous poems, which helped us see and experience colour in different ways through feel, smell, touch, taste. We had experience days to help us do this and then created some amazing free- artwork.

Maths We have been doing lots of learning about numbers to 1000. We have learnt to partition and add 1s, 10s and 100s.

English As our class book is The BFG by Roald Dahl, in English, the children have been writing a BFG dream, using a range of ‘gobblefunk’ words.

Maths In maths, we have been learning about the Place Value of numbers as well as using number lines and rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.&nbsp; As part of this learning, the children took part in an active maths lesson which was very successful and lots of fun.

Firstly, thank you so much for all of your help and support last year. Without you our fundraising ventures wouldn't be possible. This year we have a new chair (Sam) and a new secretary (Valia) and we have lots of exciting plans and ideas for the coming school year. We do need your help fundraising further funds for both the Infant and Junior schools.&nbsp; To make communication easier we have set up a new WhatsApp group where we can chat openly, organise events and discuss how you want your&nbsp;PTA to work going forward. If you have any questions or want to find out any more information, please email us or feel free to chat to Sam or Valia around the school. Project Our project this half-term has been Alchemy Island. This project combines geography, science and music skills and the children have loved it. From filtering and sieving science investigations, to finding gold using 6-figure grid references and creating soundtracks to a computer game version of the topic, this term has had it all!

“Alchemy Island had been really interesting and fun!” “When we did the coordinates we found out where the alchemists are living!” “I loved designing the potions!” “I liked trying to filter and sieve the solutions.” “I liked it when we tested the materials in Science, especially when we mixed acids and alkalis.”

Science Evolution and Inheritance-the children have been studying how animals have changed and adapted, over time, so they can survive in their environments. The experiment in the pictures showed the children why ‘Darwin’s Finches’ adapted their beaks.

Inspiring the next generation of musicians

This term, we had ‘Back Chat Brass’ (organised by Sound Waves) in for an awe-inspiring musical extravaganza for Years 4, 5 and 6. Children learnt about different instruments, revised different musical vocabulary and enjoyed a range of musical genres. Sound Waves are a charity who hire out instruments and provide music lessons – watch this space for further information from Sound Waves regarding this.

English In English the children have written their first poem using similes and metaphors like true writers. We have explored the story “Stone Age Boy” and Northcotteers are now feeling ready and eager to write their own adventure story.

Science In Science we have been looking into forces and magnets. We have put our science hats on and carried out practical experiments to then evaluate the results.

Duckpool Class

Hockey This term the children have been learning how to play hockey during their PE lessons.&nbsp; Several of the children already go to hockey lessons outside of school and so were able to model the correct techniques and rules.

Life in Y5 We’ve already had a geography field trip to Summerleaze Beach, where we learnt about mapping with Mr Turnham and the physical geography of the beach with Mr Healey. We also had Sophie from South West Water come to tell us about how water reaches our taps and how we can save water. Life in Y5 is certainly busy!

Personal Assistants Here are our wonderful personal assistants that help support us with various tasks throughout the week – who knows where we would be without them!

ICT Technicians Say hello to some of our ICT technicians this year (we have a few camera shy technicians too)&nbsp; The role of an ICT technician is to make sure that all the ICT equipment our children use has been stored properly/safely and is charged and ready to be used.

Science In science we are learning about forces. We have carefully observed how we make things move. We have thought about how cars move on different surfaces and the reasons behind this. We have started to explore contact and noncontact forces – which as you can see, the class found incredible.

What an exciting start to the year Crackington have had! Everyone has been working hard and we are already starting to see some great progress. 

Maths In Maths we have been practising our place value skills up to 1,000,000 and have also become more confident and proficient at adding and subtraction. We’ve also already had some epic times-table shootout championships!

Librarians Say hello to our wonderful new librarians; they help inspire readers, help keep the library organised and create displays about different texts to read.

Sports Leaders Our sports leaders have been busy over the last couple of weeks getting ready to teach year 3 PE sessions. This will be the first unit of this year’s sports leader awards. The first group began their teaching this week and were exceptional. They are a credit to the school!

Wow, what a fantastic start, we’ve had so much fun, playing on the trim trail, meeting new friends and creating some magnetic and Lego masterpieces. For our last week we have made some Halloween decorations and we even had our very own pumpkin to decorate. We would like to wish you a very happy half term! Karina, Jackie, Alice and Corrine

PSHE Part of our PSHE focus this term has been negotiation, collaboration, communication, and compromise.

English In English, we have been writing a short story based on the short film&nbsp; ‘Mr Morris Lessmore and the Fantastic Flying Books’ This film is about a book lover becoming custodian over a magical library. Next we wrote a poem based on `The Malfeasance’. A beautiful poem which looks at the themes of prejudice. Our VIPERs Sessions began by studying ‘Fantastic beasts and where to find them’ by J.K Rowling. We used these short texts to learn the meanings of new vocabulary and practice lots of other comprehension skills. We then moved onto a novel study using the book called `The Breakfast Club Adventures- The Ghoul In The School` written by Marcus Rashford. The story’s about a group of friends who have formed an investigation team. They work together to solve mysteries around their school.

Black Rock have made a fantastic start to the year!&nbsp;

Our second English unit of the term has been looking at a classic tale – Aladdin. The children have been reinventing the story and using their imagination to make it their own.

We have also been learning about addition and subtraction. Specifically the column method, with and without exchanges.

Maths In Maths we delved into place value in (and out of) the classroom and have started adding a subtracting 1s and 10s to 3-digit numbers.

History As historians we have been examining evidence from the past and studying life in the stone age, learning about how people lived and how things changed throughout. And let’s not forget… Stone Age day! where we got to sit around a fire, eat fish and drink nettle tea.

Northcott Class

What an amazing start to the year Northcott have had! Transitioning seamlessly into the Junior school, they’ve all shown a great deal of resilience and great learning attitudes all round! Some Northcotteers shared some thoughts about their first 6 weeks in the Juniors:

“ My favourite has been History. I really like learning so many new things about the Stone Age. And I like learning about how people discovered things about the Stone Age! I want to learn how to make Stone Age jewellery!”

“I like how we learn English. I like the bit where we fold the page and one side is for thinking and the other is for writing. I also like PE with Mr Brown and dancing with Ms Perri-Khoo.”

“I like everything at school, especially Maths because it’s my favourite. I like this class a lot.”

“I’ve really liked Maths 😊 especially those tricky questions where I have to find the missing number.”

“I like Science because you get to do experiments and we made things move and wrote about it.”

“I love my new classroom because it’s bigger and we have lots of books in our reading cave.”

“I love Science because we get to learn new things about how stuff works and do experiments. I also love Wednesdays (when we get to have Roast for lunch).”

We have had a wonderful start to year 5! Everyone has settled well and all are working their socks off!

Project We have delved into The Stone Age - discovering exactly how long ago all this took place. We have learnt that in the early and middle stone Age (Paleolithic and Mesolithic) people were hunter gathers, who made simple tools from flint, bone and antlers. We have thought about what they ate and how Britain looked at this time.

DT We have explored pneumatic toys and are now designing our own. We have had sooo much fun doing this so far.

Well, what a fantastic first half term! I am thrilled with the ongoing curriculum opportunities that staff have provided for our pupils. Take a look through this edition of the Splash and you will see so much active and outdoor learning which helps our children to thrive. Our motto is Respect, Learn, Achieve and we do this with a creative approach - whilst having fun. We also showcase examples of pupil leadership. This is something the children relish and take very seriously. Hope you all have a wonderful half term break and we very much look forward to welcoming you back into school on Tuesday 31st October.
