Emil Zátopek 1922–2000

He was a Czech runner and is well known for winning three gold medals at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. He also participated in other competitions and&nbsp; was always very successful. He’s one of the most famous Czech athlets and he was chosen as the Greatest Runner of all time by the editors at Runner’s World Magazine in 2013.&nbsp;

Věra Čáslavská&nbsp; 1942–2016

She was a Czechoslovak gymnast.&nbsp; She&nbsp; won Olympics 7 times.&nbsp; She has got her own postage stamp.&nbsp; There is a whole documentary film about her.&nbsp;

Jan Amos Komenský 1592–1670

He was a bishop of Bohemian Brethren. He was also a great teacher, a writer and a philosopher for his time. He was and is in history called the „Teacher of nations“. He is an author of the most famous Czech work (book) of 17. century: Labyrinth of the woldr and the paradise of the heart. He was in exile because of his religion and died in Amsterdam. He never returned to Czech not even after his death.

He was a Czech scientist and inventor.&nbsp; He invented soft contact lenses by rotary technology of silon.&nbsp; He invented silon too.&nbsp; He had very difficult life.&nbsp;

Jan Hus 1370–1415

He was a Czech theologian and a philosopher.&nbsp; He did not like the practices of the church, so he criticized it in his sermons.&nbsp; The church did not like his sermons and called him a heretic, but Hus did not give up his persuasion and was burned.&nbsp;

Svatý Václav Saint Wenceslas 907–935 (929)

He was a Czech monarch and a saint. He was wise and kind so he didn´t fight that much. He was murdered by his own brother and after that he was declared a saint. Now we have a square in Prague named after him and there is a statue of him on a horse.&nbsp;

Tomáš Baťa 1876–1932

Alfons Mucha 1860-1939

Alfons Mucha was a Czech painter and&nbsp;a graphic designer in the Art Nouveau period. He especially painted women in beautiful dresses with flowers and colourful patterns. He became famous after he painted a poster for Sarah Bernhardt, who was a popular actress at the time (in 19th century).&nbsp;

Eva Jiřičná *1939

Eva Jiřičná is a Czech architect and&nbsp;a designer. She lives in the UK. She has two ateliers, one is in London and the second is in Prague. She designed many buildings for example: port in Brighton in the UK, Hotel Josef in Prague and many anothers.&nbsp;

František Kupka 1871–1957

Franz Kafka&nbsp; 1883–1924

Franz Kafka is one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. He wrote three novels and a lot of short stories. He loved sports and aviation. He liked skiing and cycling. He didn’t eat meat because he liked animals.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Antonín Dvořák 1841–1904

Antonín Dvořák was a great musician. He died 100 years ago. He played the violin, the piano and the viol. His music is classical. Antonín composed 9 very nice symphonies and more than 100&nbsp;other works.&nbsp;

Jaroslav Seifert 1901–1986

Jaroslav Seifert was a Czech poet, journalist and writer. He is an only Czech writer who received&nbsp;Nobel Prize in literature. He wrote a lot of poetry collections.&nbsp;

Svatá Anežka Přemyslovna Saint Agnes of Bohemia 1269–1296&nbsp;

Anežka Přemyslovna,&nbsp; is known mainly for her charity work. She and her brother together founded a hospital of St Francis in year 1232. They also built a monastery&nbsp;Na Františku in year 1234.&nbsp;

He was a playwright.&nbsp; He was the last president of Czechoslovakia and the first president of independent Czech Republic.&nbsp; He became world famous for his drama with a theme of absurd theater.&nbsp;

Bedřich Smetana 1824–1884&nbsp;

He was a Czech composer in Romanticism. He lived in Litomyšl and there is a house named after him. He composed eight operas. The most famous opera is The Bartered Bride and is considered as a typical Czech opera. He couldn’t hear when he was fifty, however he still composed operas.&nbsp;

Karel IV. 1316–1378

Petr Parléř 1332/33–1399&nbsp;

He was a gothic architect and a builder. He was one of the architects of the st Vít temple. He also participated in the building of many other Czech monuments, for example, he participated in the building of Charles bridge.&nbsp;

Rudolf ll. 1552-1612

Rudolf ll. was a Holy Roman Emperor, King and Archduke. He ruled in 16th – 17th century and he was a member of the House of Habsburg. Vertumnus produced by Giuseppe Arcimboldo is a portrait of Rudolf ll.&nbsp;

He was one of the best Czech playwrights, poets, musicians, teachers, travellers, philosophers, inventors, scientists of his time. Some people say he was the best Czechs. There is a theatre named after him in Prague. Nobody knows how he looked like. But he is fictional. He was made to encourage Czech in bad times and remind them of the good in the Czech Republic.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk&nbsp; 1850–1937

T. G. Masaryk is probably the most important person for the Czech Republic, because he stood behind the founding of Czechoslovakia after World War I. and thus became a president of the newly formed state. He was a president until 1935 when he resigned.&nbsp;

Blanka Matragi *1953

Blanka Matragi is a fashion designer. She has received an award from Salvador Dalí and has won the title of important Czech woman in the world. She has also published her autobiography, and it was a Czech bestseller in 2006.&nbsp;

Karel Čapek was a Czech writer and journalist. He wrote in 19th and 20th Century. He wrote sci-fi books and films. His famous books and films are The White Disease, R.U.R. And War with the Newts. His brother is Josef Čapek and he was a Czech artist and writer too.&nbsp;

Jaroslav Heyrovský&nbsp; 1890–1967

Jaroslav Heyrovský was a successful scientist! He has a Nobel prize for chemistry. He invented polarography. Heyrovský lived in the 19th and 20th centuries.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jaromír Jágr *1972

Jaromír Jágr is a Czech professional ice hockey player and an owner of HC Rytíři Kladno. He´s the most productive European player who ever played in NHL and he´s considered as one of the greatest ice hockey players of all time. Jágr has the second-most points in NHL history, after Wayne Gretzky. He has played in 33 seasons and over 2000 games, which means Jágr has had one of the longest careers in professional ice hockey history.&nbsp;

Josef Čapek 1887–1945

Josef Čapek was a Czech artist and author of short stories for children. He wrote in the 19th and mostly in the 20th century. His works are for example: Talking about dog and cat, For dolpins or Little about much. Josef had a younger brother Karel, who was a writer too.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Miloš Forman&nbsp; 1932–2018

Miloš Forman was a Czech director well known for his career in the USA. He was so successful, that he managed to get two Academy Awards for Best Director, three Golden Globe Awards and one BAFTA award in the same category.&nbsp;
