lake Aoos

Aoos Lake or Aoos Springs Lake is an artificial lake created after the construction of a dam on the Aoos River. It is located in the prefecture of Ioannina. Its constuction began in 1981 and was completed in 1991. The purpose of the construction of the project is to exploit part of the water from the sources of the Aoos River, for the production of electricity. Its area is 11.5 km2 , while it is located in altitude 1,350 m, which ranks it as the most mountainous large lake in Greece. It is located on the Politses plateau, 20 km northwest of Metsovo and combines a unique labyrinth of streams , natural small lakes etc. The depth varies significantly depending on where one is: in some it can be less than 1m, in others it reaches 7-8m or over 80m near its dam.
