The ‘Rocío’ with the ‘Triana Brotherhood’

This song is called ‘Cántame’ (‘Sing for me’). It is performed by a famous flamenco singer called ‘María del Monte’ (‘Mary of the Hill’). The song tells the love story of a man and a woman who fell in love while they were in ‘the Rocío’. The Rocío’s Pilgrimage is a pilgrimage which is celebrated 50 days after Easter Sunday. The Rocío’s Way is like a procession that lasts 8 days. You start at ‘Santa Ana’ church and at the end you arrive at the ‘Ermita del Rocío’ (Rocío’s Chapel). Women dress up as ‘flamencas’ and men as ‘de corto’, typical dresses from the Andalusian culture. There are some stops in the Rocío’s Way and they look like a campsite. There are lots of people riding horses and some others drive cart or carriages. When you get to the Rocío Chapel you attend a mass and you can see the Virgin of the Rocío. There are a lot of people who buy candles and place them as an offering to the Virgin. Songs and dances accompany you all along the way.

History of Oró Sé do Bheatha 'Bhaile. Oró Sé do Bheatha 'Bhaile is a very old Irish patriotic song which had many versions from the 17 hundreds right up to the early 20th century. Throughout all versions the song was a call to arms for Irish men and women to defend the country from invaders. The word oró is a war cry and sé do bheatha abhaile means welcome home as they were welcoming warriors back home from battle. In the early 20th century the Irish Rebellion leader Padraig Pearce added new verses which modernised the song making it a popular rebel anthem of its time. He included in the song references to the 17th century Grace O Malley, a much loved folk heroine pirate Queen who symbolised resistance to English rule.&nbsp; The song has endured and was popularised for an English language audience by bands such as the Dubliners, Seo Linn and Sinéad O Connor.

The second verse of the song features Gráinne Mhaol, who was known as the Pirate Queen of Connacht and a formidable power on the west coast of Ireland in the late 16th centuary. We dressed up as sea warriors and made our own Celtic Pirate hats!
