THE TOWN OF POZZUOLI
The original nucleus of the town of Pozzuoli is situated on a rocky promontory situated in the gulf of Naples between Posillipo and Miseno. In Roman times, its port was the arrival point wheat travelling between Egytp and Rome. Today, Pozzuoli is considered as the most important centre of the Campi Flegrei area (Phlegraen Fields ). With its favourable geographical position, historic traditions of thermal spa’s and resort and the presence of ancient, Roman and medieval monuments, Pozzuoli is a very important touristic and commercial centre.
RIONE TERRA
The Rione Terra is the heart of the city of Pozzuoli. It is the first living nucleus of Pozzuoli, in the metropolitan city of Naples, on a small hill. Housed since the 2nd century BC, it was placed in an elevated position for the purpose of controlling the surrounding area both in maritime and land routes. From Strabone we know that here was the primordial port of the Greeks of Cuma, while in Roman times Pozzuoli will represent the main port of Rome, before the realization of that of Ostia. In 1970, the Rione Terra was abandoned due to bradisismic phenomena.
AVERNUS LAKE
The Avernus lake is a volcanic lake which is located in Pozzuoli.
According to greek and then roman religion, it was access to the outbreak, kingdom of Pluto god. For this reason the romans hell are also called “Averno”. The Avernus lake lies inside a volcanic crater switched off, born 4.000 years ago.
The Avernus lake is second by size, after the Fusarium, of the lakes in the Phleghran Fields.
