In the morning when he went outside he did not find any eggs, just some holes in the ground. Nick looked inside these holes and - to his surprise- he found some golden eggs! He picked up the golden eggs from all the holes and he covered them without saying anything to his parents. He hid the eggs in his bedroom. A little later he heard on TV that the Easter bunny had not brought eggs to any of the children this year. Nick was surprised and went to the library in the neighbourhood, which was huge. There he found many books about the Easter bunny and started reading them one after the other. The next day after school he went to the library again and he did the same thing for many days…A week later he had read all the books about the Easter bunny and he understood that the Easter bunny every 5 centuries brings the eggs to only one child and inside these eggs, he hides pieces which can be assembled to create a machine of teleportation. But no one had ever succeeded to assemble it until then.&nbsp;

Once upon a time, there was a rabbit whose name was Jack. Jack had one and unique dream, he wanted to travel to Corfu, a beautiful island in Crete. But his parents tell him: "Oh, my dear, you can travel to Corfu when you become 18 years old". Jack was patient and he waited until he could travel to Corfu. When the time arrived, the next day of his birthday, he set off with his family and went to Corfu. Jack and his family arrived in Corfu and they celebrated Easter there. But the most exciting thing is that in Corfu people have a custom: they throw pots from the balconies of their houses. Jack finally fulfilled his dream...It was his best Easter!!!

Ένα χελιδόνι ήρθε Μια φορά κι έναν καιρό ζούσαν σε μία φάρμα&nbsp;διάφορα είδη ζώων. Εκεί ζούσαν σαν οικογένεια όλα τα&nbsp;ζώα που ήταν: το άλογο, το πρόβατο, οι πάπιες, οι γάτες και ο σκύλος. Μια μέρα ήρθε ένα χελιδόνι και έκατσε στην φάρμα μαζί με τα άλλα ζώα. Όταν είδαν το χελιδόνι τα ζώα θύμωσαν και του είπαν να φύγει γιατί ενοχλεί τα και η φάρμα είναι μόνα δικιά τους. Το χελιδόνι τους είπε όμως ότι ήρθε από πολύ μακριά και κάθισε να ξεκουραστεί και να φτιάξει καινούργια φωλιά. Τότε τα ζώα του είπαν πάλι να φύγει και να πάει αλλού να φτιάξει την φωλιά του. Μέτα από μερικές μέρες καθώς το χελιδόνι πετούσε κοντά σε μια λίμνη είδε μια γάτα να κρέμεται από ένα κλαδί νιαουρίζοντας δυνατά. Τότε το χελιδόνι πλησίασε και κατάλαβε ότι η γάτα κινδυνεύει. Πέταξε αμέσως να βρει βοήθεια από τα άλλα ζώα. Όλα τα ζώα έτρεξαν να βοηθήσουν την γάτα που ήταν χτυπημένη στο ένα πόδι και να την μεταφέρουν στην φάρμα. Η γάτα ευχαρίστησε το χελιδόνι που βρέθηκε κοντά της και την βοήθησε όμως και τα άλλα ζώα ήταν χαρούμενα που το χελιδόνι ήρθε στην παρέα τους. Όλοι αποφάσισαν να μείνει μαζί τους το χελιδόνι και άρχισαν να του φτιάχνουν την φωλιά του κοντά στην φάρμα. Έτσι η φάρμα απέκτησε ακόμα ένα μέλος και η οικογένεια μεγάλωσε. Το βράδυ αφού τελείωσαν με την φωλιά του γιόρτασαν τον ερχομό της Άνοιξης.

Once upon a time, difference kinds of animals lived on a farm. There lived as a family all the animals that were: the horse, the sheep, the ducks, the cats and the dog. One day a swallow came and sat on the farm with the other animals. When they saw the swallow, the animals got angry and told him to leave because it bothers them and the farm is theirs alone. The swallow, however, told them that he had come from a great distance and sat down to rest and make a new nest. Then the animals told him to leave again and go elsewhere to build his nest. A few days later as the swallow was flying near a lake he saw a cat hanging from a branch meowing loudly. Then the swallow approached and realized that the cat was in danger. He immediately flew to find help from the other animals. All the animals ran to help the cat that was beaten on one leg and transport it to the farm. The cat thanked the swallow that was near her and helped her but the other animals were happy that the swallow came in their company. They all decided to keep the swallow with them and started building his nest near the farm. So the farm acquired another member and the family grew. In the evening, after they finished with his nest, they celebrated the coming of spring.

Where are the Easter eggs?

The moment most expected for the children at Easter is when they look for the hidden eggs in the garden. This Easter though the children were very happy to look for their eggs, but they did not find anything! At first, they thought that the Easter bunny forgot to hide them. But he never does. So they thought that maybe he has been kidnapped…and who could have done such a terrible thing?! The children decided to investigate this. They asked all their friends, but nobody had found any eggs in their gardens. Something strange was certainly going on…They searched all over the town to find a clue, but they did not find anything…but when they sat on a bench to rest as they were very tired, one of the children sat on a box! They opened the box and found some broken eggs and a note. The note said that if they followed 150 steps straight ahead from the point they found it, they would find one more clue leading them to the Easter bunny! They followed then the 150 steps and found the second note: The note said: “if you want to see your Easter bunny again, you should organize a party for me, hunter Tim, or else I will keep the bunny in its cage”. The children got scared, but they could not accept it. They believed in themselves and were certain that they could make it.

Two children, John and Christos, wanted to break the Easter eggs as was the tradition. John’s egg cracked first and he was sad. but then he thought of using a stone egg instead. The boys repeated the game with the Easter eggs. This time John was the winner! Nevertheless, Christos noticed something grey on John’s egg and asked him: “What is this grey thing on your egg?” and grabbed the egg from his hand to wash it…John got angry: “No, No! Don’t do it!”. But Christos wouldn’t listen. He took the egg and washed it and then he realized that it was a stone egg and that his friend had played a trick on him… ‘I’m sorry, but I wanted to break your egg too…” said John. “That’s ok” Christos said. “Let’s be friends again!”… “I promise I won’t do this again!”

&nbsp;&nbsp;It was Easter Sunday and the preparations for the Easter table started very early. Dad lit the charcoals and put the lamb on the spit, while Mum and Grandma were in the kitchen preparing the rest of the dishes. “Tsourekia”, “Kaltsounia” and red eggs have their honor. We ate a lot of food. I felt like a king, but my thought suddenly turned to our return. The next day we'd go home because Dad was going to start work again. In the evening, we loaded the car and took the way back home...&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;As I’m writing this letter to you, my feelings are mixed. Joy for what I experienced in the village and sadness as we had to return so soon. It was certainly an experience that I'll never forget. I’m closing this letter with a wish that next Easter you will be able to come to Greece and that we will spend Easter holidays together!

Η εβδομάδα των Παθών ξεκίνησε την Κυριακή το απόγευμα, με την έξοδο του Νυμφίου. Από νωρίς το μεσημέρι ξεχύθηκα μαζί με τους φίλους μου στα χωράφια για να μαζέψουμε λουλούδια. Το έθιμο απαιτεί, όταν βγαίνει η εικόνα του Νυμφίου, τα μικρά παιδιά να πετάνε λουλούδια. Ο Χριστός οδηγήθηκε στον Σταυρό και οι άνθρωποι τον στόλισαν με γιρλάντες από λεμονανθούς.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Τη Μεγάλη Παρασκευή το πρωί, πήγα στην εκκλησία για να βοηθήσω τον ιερέα να κατεβάσει το σώμα του Χριστού από τον Σταυρό και να το τοποθετήσει στον επιτάφιο. Το έθιμο της περιοχής προστάζει τις γυναίκες, το βράδυ της Μεγάλης Πέμπτης, να έχουν στολίσει τον τάφο του Χριστού (επιτάφιο). Από τη στιγμή που το σώμα τοποθετήθηκε εκεί μέσα, οι καμπάνες άρχισαν να χτυπούν πένθιμα.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Γύρισα στο σπίτι, σκεφτόμενος ότι είναι μια μέρα θλίψης, επειδή ο Χριστός μας βρίσκεται στον τάφο. Ακόμα και η Φύση εκφράζει τη λύπη της με τον συννεφιασμένο ουρανό. Φάγαμε όλοι μαζί λιτό και χωρίς λάδι φαγητό, νερόβραστες φακές με μπόλικο ξύδι, σε ανάμνηση του γεγονότος ότι ο Χριστός μας ποτίστηκε με ξύδι από τον στρατιώτη, ενώ βρισκόταν πάνω στο σταυρό.

Έπειτα πήγα στη Μεγάλη Παναγία. Πέρασα τρεις φορές από κάτω του, προσδοκώντας καλή τύχη. Συνέχισα πηγαίνοντας στον Άγιο Σύλλα. Είναι μια μικρή, αλλά πολύ σημαντική εκκλησία για την ιστορία της Νεάπολης. &nbsp;Εκεί υπάρχει ένα πηγάδι με νερό, που είναι θαυματουργό αλλά και αγίασμα γιατί αναβλύζει κάτω από τον ναό. Το λουζόμαστε και πλενόμαστε με αυτό. Έχει θεραπεύσει και πολλούς ανθρώπους άλλωστε!&nbsp; Το βράδυ, κατά τις επτά και μισή πήγα στη Μεγάλη Παναγία με τα καλύτερά μου ρούχα. Έψαλλα τα εγκώμια, που είναι μεγάλη τιμή, γιατί είναι θρήνος από την Παναγία προς τον Χριστό. &nbsp; Έπειτα, συνόδευσα -εγώ και η οικογένειά μου- τον επιτάφιο στην περιφορά του. Ήταν πολύς κόσμος, που κρατώντας ένα κερί ακούγαμε τις καμπάνες να χτυπούν πένθιμα. Όταν φτάσαμε στην εκκλησία περάσαμε κάτω από τον επιτάφιο για άλλη μια φορά, ανάψαμε κερί και φύγαμε…

Επιτέλους ξημερώνει Μεγάλο Σάββατο. Στο σπίτι γίνονται πυρετώδεις προετοιμασίες για το δείπνο μετά την Ανάσταση. Εγώ όμως δεν μπορώ να περιμένω, διότι το καθήκον με καλεί. Δεν ξέρω με τι να πρωτοασχοληθώ. Με τον ιερέα που θέλει να πετάξει τις δάφνες στον κόσμο για να δηλώσει την πρώτη Ανάσταση ή με τα παιδιά που πρέπει να μαζέψουν ξύλα και κλαδιά για να φτιάξουν τον χώρο όπου θα καεί το ομοίωμα του Ιούδα;&nbsp; Η απόφαση πάρθηκε χωρίς πολλή σκέψη! Στάθηκα τυχερός. Η Θεία Λειτουργία τελείωσε νωρίς κι έτσι βοήθησα και τους φίλους μου. Το βράδυ ήρθε. Ντυθήκαμε με τα καλά μας ρούχα και όταν οι καμπάνες χτύπησαν, πήγαμε στην εκκλησία για να πάρουμε το Άγιο Φως. Φτάσαμε τη στιγμή που ο ιερέας είχε κλείσει τα φώτα του ναού και έβγαινε με τις αναμμένες του λαμπάδες από την Ωραία Πύλη δίνοντας τη φωτιά των κεριών του στους πιστούς. Στη συνέχεια ο κόσμος βγήκε από την εκκλησία και κατευθύνθηκε στην πλατεία για να ακούσει το «Χριστός Ανέστη». Όλοι περιμέναμε με ανυπομονησία να ακούσουμε τον ιερέα και ειδικά τα παιδιά που κρατούσαν πυροτεχνήματα. Η σκέψη τους ήταν, στο πρώτο «Χριστός Ανέστη» να ανάψουν τη φωτιά που θα έκαιγαν τον Ιούδα.&nbsp; Ο ιερέας ξεκίνησε και η νύχτα έγινε μέρα! Δεν τον ακούγαμε καθόλου από τη φασαρία. Στη συνέχεια επιστρέψαμε στην εκκλησία για την αναστάσιμη λειτουργία. Τελειώσαμε στις τρεις το πρωί και επιστρέψαμε με χαρά στο σπίτι για το γιορτινό τραπέζι με τη γνωστή μαγειρίτσα. Μόλις τελειώσαμε πέσαμε κατάκοποι στο κρεβάτι.

Once upon a time, there were two bunnies who were very good friends. Every Easter they used to paint their eggs red on Holy Thursday. But this Easter, Tik and Ric decided to try something different to celebrate Easter. They decided to paint their eggs with many colours! They got up in the morning on Holy Thursday and were very happy to paint their eggs and that is why the result was amazing! So they made a beautiful Easter basket with colourful eggs!

Once upon a time, in Athens lived a boy called Nick. As soon as he became 12 years old his parents decided to move to the USA to find a better job, because in Athens they did not have a lot of money…but they did not tell Nick anything about it. When Nick learned about it he became very sad, not because he would not have any friends there, but because he would not be able to celebrate Easter with his grandparents. When they moved to their new house, his father informed him that the Easter bunny would hide some eggs in the garden and he has to find them all. Nick went to bed right away because he wanted to rest and start looking for the eggs the following day.

Είναι πλέον Κυριακή του Πάσχα και οι ετοιμασίες για το πασχαλινό τραπέζι ξεκίνησαν από πολύ νωρίς. Ο μπαμπάς έχει ανάψει τα κάρβουνα και έχει βάλει το αρνί στη σούβλα, ενώ η μαμά και η γιαγιά είναι μέσα στην κουζίνα φτιάχνοντας τα συνοδευτικά. Τα τσουρέκια, τα καλτσούνια και τα κόκκινα αυγά έχουν την τιμητική τους. Φάγαμε μέχρι σκασμού! Ένιωσα σαν βασιλιάς, όμως η σκέψη μου ξαφνικά γύρισε στην επιστροφή μας. Την επομένη θα επιστρέφαμε σπίτι, γιατί ο μπαμπάς θα επέστρεφε στη δουλειά. Το βράδυ, φορτώσαμε το αμάξι και πήραμε τον δρόμο της επιστροφής…&nbsp; Τα συναισθήματα μου είναι ανάμεικτα. Χαρά για όσα έζησα στο χωριό και λύπη καθώς έπρεπε να επιστρέψουμε τόσο σύντομα. Σίγουρα, ήταν μια εμπειρία που θα μου μείνει αξέχαστη. Η σκέψη μου γράφοντάς σου αυτό το γράμμα είναι να κλείσω με την ευχή το επόμενο Πάσχα να έρθεις στην Ελλάδα και να το περάσουμε μαζί!

- I'm Easter Bunny. Look! This is my basket. In the forest, there are four chocolate eggs. Find all the eggs and you can eat them! - Oooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Thank you!

Nick ran to the house, opened one of the golden eggs and found a piece. He opened the rest of the eggs, but the pieces were not enough. At that moment he thought “What can I do with this machine?”. But he soon found the answer “With this machine I will go and celebrate Easter with my grandparents!”. From then on he tried to find more of those eggs, but he did not succeed. So he had to wait for the following year at Easter to find more golden eggs and so he did the next year. But the third year all kids had their chocolate eggs…Finally, when Nick became 15 years old he managed to gather all the pieces and make this machine…Fantastic!&nbsp;

On that day he stepped inside the machine, closed his eyes and he thought about his grandparents and the next moment he found himself in their house in Athens! How happy he was. Then thought of his home and went back! The next day he explained everything to his parents. He encouraged them to do the same, to step in the machine and think where they would like to go. But he did not tell them where they should go, so they found themselves in the living room of their house. After that, he encouraged them to think of the grandparents’ house and finally, all the family gathered there to celebrate Easter…When they returned home, Nick and his parents did not know what to do with the machine. They decided to keep it and since then they could go everywhere they wanted every when they decided it!!!

Narrating Easter celebrations in Neapolis, Crete...a collective work by the pupils of the 6th grade

&nbsp;&nbsp;In the evening, at half past seven, I went to “Megali Panagia” in my best clothes. I sang the “Egomia” (lamentations) expressing the mourning words of Virgin Mary before the Holy Sepulcher. &nbsp;&nbsp;Then my family and I followed the procession of the Epitaph. There were a lot of people holding a candle. We could all hear the bells ringing in mourning. When we arrived at the church we passed under the Epitaph once again, lit a candle and left... &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It finally dawned Holy Saturday. At home, a lot of preparations were made for the dinner after the Resurrection. But duty called me. First, I had to help the priest to throw laurels to the crowd, representing the first Resurrection. Then I wanted to help the children find wood and branches for the bonfire where an effigy of Judas would be burnt. I was very lucky to experience both! &nbsp;&nbsp;The night finally came. We dressed in our formal clothes and when the bells rang, we went to the church to get the Holy Light. We arrived at the moment when the priest had turned off the lights of the church and came out from the “Orea Pili” with a lit candle, giving the fire of his candle to the faithful crowd. Then people came out of the church and headed to the main square of Neapolis to sing "Christos Anesti" (Jesus resurrected). &nbsp;&nbsp;We were all looking forward to hearing the priest singing "Christos Anesti", especially the children that were holding fireworks. Their thought was to light the fire that would burn “Judas” at the first words of "Christos Anesti". The priest started and the night became day! We couldn't hear him at all because of the noise. Then we returned to the church for the&nbsp;Βlessed Resurrected. We finished at three in the morning and gladly returned home for the festive table, with the well-known “Magiritsa”. As soon as we finished dinner, we fell asleep very quickly.

They searched day and night until they found Tim’s house, which they visited that night. In a corner of the living room, they found the bunny tied in a chair, but when they tried to free him, Tim woke and surprised them! The children then ran behind the chair and pretended that they were scared, but they had actually another plan. Just when the hunter moved a step ahead, the little girl stood before him and made him skillfully trip up…the hunter fell on the floor! The children freed the hunter and then they helped him hide the eggs in the yards and gardens of all the children who were still waiting for the Easter egg hunt!

15/5/2021, Neapolis &nbsp; &nbsp; My dear friend Paul, &nbsp; I'm sending you this letter to describe how I spent Easter in my small town, Neapolis. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As soon as the schools closed for the Easter holidays, we left right away for my mum's village. It is a quiet place in the mountains, in the north-eastern part of Crete. People there keep their customs and traditions through time. You feel like you're getting into a time machine. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;My first walk started as soon as I set foot there. The journey to tradition had just begun! The main feature of this city is that it has many churches. People have a strong religious feeling and they have identified its way of life with the religious tradition, especially during the Easter period. &nbsp;&nbsp;As soon as my grandmother saw me, she said, "The priest needs help, you're just in time!". As you can see, I had to take over my ‘duty’ – once again. The next day, which is called “Kiriaki ton Baion” (Palm Sunday), I found myself at the church of “Megali Panagia” at the first ringing of the bells. My first job was to wear my religious outfit and begin to help the priest. At the end of the Divine Liturgy, I helped him to offer the faithful crosses made of palm leaves to the people. &nbsp;&nbsp;The week of Passions began on Sunday afternoon, with the exit of “Nymphios” (Jesus Christ). At noon I went out with my friends in the fields to collect flowers. According to the custom, the young children throw flowers as soon as the icon of “Nymphios” comes out. So, on Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday and Holy Wednesday, we praised devotional “Nymphios”.

15/5/2021, Νεάπολη &nbsp; &nbsp; Αγαπητέ μου φίλε Παύλο, &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Σου στέλνω αυτό το γράμμα για να σου περιγράψω πώς πέρασα το Πάσχα στη μικρή μου πόλη, τη Νεάπολη. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Μόλις έκλεισαν τα σχολεία, φύγαμε αμέσως για το χωριό της μαμάς μου. Πρόκειται για ένα ήσυχο μέρος, μέσα στα βουνά, στο βόρειο και ανατολικό μέρος της Κρήτης. Ο κόσμος εκεί, διατηρεί τα ήθη και τα έθιμά του μέσα στον χρόνο. Νιώθεις σαν να μπαίνεις σε μια χρονομηχανή. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Η πρώτη μου βόλτα, ξεκίνησε καθώς πάτησα το πόδι μου εκεί. Το ταξίδι στην παράδοση μόλις άρχισε! Ένα κύριο χαρακτηριστικό της πόλης αυτής είναι οι πολλές της εκκλησίες. Ο κόσμος έχει έντονο το θρησκευτικό συναίσθημα και έχει ταυτίσει τον τρόπο ζωής του με τη θρησκευτική παράδοση, κυρίως την περίοδο του Πάσχα. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Μόλις με είδε η γιαγιά μου, μου είπε: «Ο Πάτερ χρειάζεται βοήθεια, ήρθες πάνω στην ώρα!» Όπως καταλαβαίνεις, έπρεπε να αναλάβω τα καθήκοντά μου –για άλλη μια φορά. Την επόμενη μέρα, Κυριακή των Βαΐων, με την πρώτη καμπάνα βρέθηκα στην εκκλησία της Μεγάλης Παναγίας. Η πρώτη μου δουλειά ήταν να φορέσω την εκκλησιαστική μου στολή και να αρχίσω να βοηθάω τον ιερέα. Τελειώνοντας τη Θεία Λειτουργία, μοίρασα στους πιστούς σταυρούς φτιαγμένους από φύλλα φοίνικα.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;In the afternoon of Holy Wednesday, there is a custom of the locals going to the church to be ‘crucified’ by the priest with holy oil on their forehead, a ritual that is accompanied with wishes of forgiveness by the priest. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;On Holy Thursday morning, I didn't go to church since I had to help my family paint the eggs. That afternoon was very tiring for me. My feet hurt because I was standing for hours to listen to the twelve gospels at the church! Christ’s “body” was put on the Holy Cross and people decorated him with garlands of lemon blossoms. On Holy Friday morning, I went to the church to help the priest take the body of Christ down from the Cross and place it on the Epitaph. According to this custom, in the evening of Holy Thursday, women decorate the tomb of Christ (Epitaphios). As soon as the body was placed in there, the bells started ringing in mourning. &nbsp;&nbsp;I came home thinking it was a day of mourning, because our Christ was in the tomb. Even Nature seemed to regret with its cloudy sky on that day. We all ate together simple and oil-free food, boiled lentils with plenty of vinegar in memory of the fact that Christ was watered with vinegar by the soldier while he was on the Cross. &nbsp;&nbsp;In the afternoon, I went for a long walk in Neapolis to see the various Epitaphs, each church decorating its own. At first, I visited “Agios Georgios”, the church that was closest to me and which is the 2nd largest in Neapolis. Then I went to “Megali Panagia”. I walked under the Epitaph for three times, expecting good luck.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Next stop was the church of “Agios Syllas”. It is a small but very important church of the history of Neapolis. There is a well with water, which is miraculous, but also holy, because it gushes under the church. We washed with that Holy Water. It has healed a lot of people after all!
