World war II

World War 2 ended with the unconditional surrender of the Axis powers in 1945 in May.

It was dangerous living in a big city during the war. Cities were the target of enemy aircraft that flew over at night and dropped bombs.

The Second World War was started by Germany in an unprovoked attack on Poland. Britain and France declared war on Germany after Hitler had refused to abort his invasion of Poland.

World War Two in Europe began on 3rd September 1939, when the Prime Minister of Britain, Neville Chamberlain, declared war on Germany. It involved many of the world&apos;s countries. It started because Germany invaded Poland.

The First World War had to be fought mainly on the ground. World War Two was a different kind of war as it was both on the ground and from the air.

One of the first naval battles fought in the Pacific during World War II. The Battle of the Coral Sea was fought from 4 May – 8 May 1942. It was a major naval battle fought, about 500 miles northeast of Australia, between the Imperial Japanese Navy and the United States and Australia.

The British evacuation began on Friday 1 September 1939. It was called &apos;Operation Pied Piper&apos;.Between 1939 - 1945 there were three major evacuations in preparation of the German Luftwaffe bombing Britain. Children left their parents to move alone to the countryside. It was a scary time for them.

During World War II all sorts of essential and non-essential foods were rationed, as well as clothing, furniture and petrol because the German submarines were sinking supplies as they  were being delivered.
