To make the British weak, the Germans tried to cut off supplies of food and other goods. German submarines attacked many of the ships that brought food to Britain. Before the war, Britain imported 55 million tons of food, a month after the war had started this figure had dropped to 12 million.

The British evacuation began on Friday 1 September 1939. It was called &apos;Operation Pied Piper&apos;. Between 1939 - 1945 there were three major evacuations in preparation of the German Luftwaffe bombing Britain.

On the 7th September, 1940 the German air force changed its strategy of bombing the British air force (Battle of Britain) and began to concentrate on bombing London. Nearly 2,000 people were killed or wounded in London&apos;s first night of the Blitz.
