Rationing caried on for 9 years after WW2.It was because Britain had restock all the food that was rationed ,great War.

Every man, woman and child was given a ration book with coupons. These were required before rationed goods could be purchased. Basic foodstuffs such as sugar, meat, fats, bacon and cheese were directly rationed by an allowance of coupons

 Rationing was a means of ensuring the fair distribution of food and commodities when they were scarce. It began after the start of WW2 with petrol and later included other goods such as butter, sugar and bacon. Eventually, most foods were covered by the rationing system with the exception of fruit and vegetables.

By the spring, Americans were unable to purchase sugar without government-issued food coupons. Vouchers for coffee were introduced in November, and by March of 1943, meat, cheese, fats, canned fish, canned milk and other processed foods were added to the list of rationed provisions

Some British children were evacuated to families as far away as Australia, Canada or the USA. The evacuation of children started two days before war was even declared and all evacuees were given a gas mask to carry with them. In 1940, 'rationing' was introduced to stop supplies from running out.
