Tectonic plates move relative to each other, causing certain geologic activities 

Plates move in different directions and at different speeds. They interact at the edges, or plate boundaries.when two plates separate, they form a divergent plate boundary . When they crash together, they form a convergent plate boundary. When they slide past each other they form a transform plate boundary.

Scientists debated how to interpret the shapes and positions of Earth’s continents.

In the 1500s, mapmakers noticed that some of the continents looked like they fit together, like a puzzle. Before that, people thought that the world was created with the continents already in place. Lots of scientists had different ideas on this.

Movement along faults produces seismic waves

When plates move along the fault into a new position, they create vibrations called seismic waves. Those are what we would feel if there was an earthquake.

Mantle convection contributes to tectonic plate movement.

Earth is made up of partially melted material. Warmer material rises and colder material sinks. This causes convection currents, which drag the tectonic plate along with it.

Technology helps scientists make inferences about the different layers of the Earth.

Since the Earth’s interior is to hot to actually see, no tools like cameras can actually see it. One way that scientists study the Earth’s layers is by studying energy waves.

Earth’s surface is made of huge rocky plates

Volcanos form at convergent plate boundaries. The certain type of boundary when oceanic crust collides with continental crust is called a oceanic-continental convergent boundary.

Mountain ranges can also form when continental crust collides.

Sometimes instead of producing a volcano, earthquakes can also produce mountains, like the Rockies!

Most earthquakes occur near tectonic plate boundaries.

Imagine bending a stick with your hands. Eventually, the stick will break. That is what is happening to tectonic plates, which cause earthquakes. They bend, and bend, and bend, until they break.

Studies of the ocean floor revealed where new rock is made.<br/>

Scientists study the ocean floor using many different tools like sonar. They study this to show where new rock and plates are being made.

The geographical history of British Columbia helps shape our lives.
