GRATITUDE MOMENTS - Monday morning impacts are great reflection opportunities to have students connect with the prior week or weekend SEL gratitude moments. Why not have students create, design, write and light-up another classmates learning world with a custom designed gratitude card? Educators from Lake Geneva, WI schools created gratitude cards as part of our Summer Tech Splash event, and wow the amazing curriculum ideas that came to light :-)

The WHY for CT in K12 Education

Computational Thinking is an important thought processing life skill. "It is "a way of how to solve problems, through designing systems and understanding human behavior that draws on concepts fundamental to computer science… a fundamental skill for everyone, not just computer scientists." "The skill required to tell a computer what to do is programming. The thought process behind programming is computational thinking." What it isn't is humans thinking like computers. (The Journal, 2018).

The new report, "Computational Thinking for a Computational World," explains, "technology is having a dramatic impact on jobs and how we work." Those technologies include smart systems, machine learning and robotics. Bringing computational thinking into education would prepare students to undertake problem solving where the problems are complex and have many interrelated parts, to develop processes that are "logical, precise and repeatable" (like algorithms); and to understand how to work with data to support their problem-solving.

PreK through high school who are interested in teaching computer science. CS for All Teachers provides a virtual home for teachers to connect with one another and with the resources and expertise they need to successfully teach computer science in their classrooms. https://csforallteachers.org

CS Talking Paper Dolls Activity To Build Character Development & SEL Skills

Checkout my latest Instructables unplugged coding activity "Magical Coding Recipes" using Scratch Jr. Blocks as magnetic printable paper. When you introduce this student-centered activity with metal cookie baking sheets, amazing magical coding recipes can be created by your creative students.

In this Instructables guide you will be inspired to design, make and code your own personalized talking paper doll or storybook character. You will then code/program and record your storyline narration, or an interactive character dialogue with Scratch 3.0!

The hands-on materials you will use to excite your 3rd-8th grade students with making/creating will include crafting materials, photo program such as Canva or Google Drawings to edit a digital photo, a Makey Makey kit, and coding/programming tool of Scratch. More teaching ideas can be found here and you can follow @MakeyMakey on Twitter for more amazing inspiration!

SCENARIO: A new self-driving electric car manufacturing plant is opening up in your local community called "Resurgence." More jobs- means more opportunities to help grow the economy and allow local businesses flourish! The Resurgence car company is looking for design engineers with creative mindsets to innovative the next high-tech self-driving electric car. This concept car will need to be cost effective, green-friendly and meet the immediate travel demands and social tech & accessibility needs of today's Generation Z workforce.

CHALLENGE: As a Self Driving Electric Car Dream Team - you and your teammates will design a prototype or concept car with 3Doodler pens. From the initial concept, to the physical structure design, to the assembly line production, and to the addition of added bling - to make the best possible concept car in 60 minutes.
