Students Respond to The Crisis: A Partnership with Storm King Art Center by The Unlimited Horizons Classes

This is my sculpture "Progressive Tower." I gave it this title because while i was building it, I had an idea in mind but it looked nothing like this, it was just a cube with maybe a triangle roof, but obviously that is nothing close to what I have here. I kept on adding on to it, gaining new ideas and progressing further into different shapes. I think my piece connects to "The Crisis" because a crisis has different sections/phases that it will go to, so does my tower.

I called my sculpture "The Box" because I built up some squares

My sculpture is called "just a box" because it is in the shape of a box. also it took a long time to make it.

My tube art is called Nyā Koneko. That means Meow Kitty in Japanese. I decide to name it this because I love japanese anime and my tube art looks like a cat. My art it tall and wide. I placed my plant in the bottom middle of my art. マインチューブアートはニャコネコと呼ばれています。それは日本語でニャーキティをメンズします。日本のアニメが大好きで、チューブアートが猫のように見えるので、この名前を付けることにしました。私の芸術それは縦と横です。アートの下部中央に植物を配置しました。 Mainchūbuāto wa nekoneko to yobarete imasu. I called it "Father" because Father's Day is on Sunday and my made this sculpture for my dad.

I also am connected to the crisis because My creator thinks that the Crisis has a trapped look.

"Oh yes my design really came out great. However the thinking part of it was hard for my creator, especially during my creation. 'How many straws should I use? Am I taking too long?'"

My project is called The slanting Cube. I call it this because it looks like a hollow cube that is slanted and I can fit my beautiful impatient in.

Before I had many names for this project but as I kept making changes I decided to change the name.

This connects to the crisis because the structure is all over the place and there is a beautiful impatient in the middle that is native to asia.

Looking at my other classmates' work kinda inspired me to make this but I also used my own thinking as well.

I called my sculpture the diamond. I think this connects to The Crisis because I think it looks like a crisis because it looks like a big sculpture or diamond is going to fall on a nice plant. That's what I think it looks like. And I think it represents a real-life thing.

I named it that because I made a design attached to the purple pipe cleaner and I thought it looked like a 3.

See that pink small thing next to it? that's an eraser piece. i put it there because I thought it looked cool.

I call my sculpture " The Disaster" because... its like a disaster. Like, it has some crazy look, It has some detail, and i bent the straws to make it look like a disaster on he top. And, it is an artistic form and plastic materials. Its three dimensional, and the straws that are coming out the clay and bending, destroying the clay makes it look like a disaster.

The title of this is called "Fallen House." This is because it looks like a fallen over house. When I was constructing this piece I didn't have an idea so I was just putting the straws together and created this. This connects to The Crisis because if the house tilts over anymore the plant will fall over and the dirt will come out.

It's called the chair because i wanted to make something different then everyone so i made a chair and it"s called the chair

The way I build my Diamond is that I put pipe cleaners inside the tubes at first I was gonna do something else but I changed it to a diamond to represent the first drawing I made with my best friend.

The reason why I built this is because me and my best friend made our first drawings with diamonds and it means a lot to me.

I called it pipes because those things that are sticking out look like pipes. Also because the top looks like tubes.

Something I thought was when I was building the sculpture was I should enclose the plant because it is free but then you put it in a box and it's not free, it is a crisis.

My sculpture connects to a crisis because, well the plant is having a crisis he (or she) isn't free!

First, I molded my clay for the pot, I had this idea to make a lot of scratches to make it look like someone found it in a alleyway.Next, I had to think what my structure would look like so I wanted to make a simple house.When I though I could make windows on all sides.But when I looked at it from on top it looked like a owl with glasses.Since I like owl I going to stick with it.Now my plant it has a full grown flower and some flowers that haven't grown yet.

I call it anything because if you look each different angle, it will look different. In the pictures I see an ant, an tunnel, a bird, and a rocket ship. What do you see?

My structure, The 05 Leaning starts with a robot named 05. The 05 robot was a failed experiment it was the 5 one made then they shut down. The word leaning is the building the 05 robot lives in it also is at a slant which gives it its name. The 05 leaning is a resemblance of covid -19. The reason why is that very few thing were made and everything was shut down. The reason why I named the robot 05 is that 5 is my favorite number. Here is my plant the dead plant resembles covid. The reason why is that people were dying from covid. The pot's scratches resemble how many people were scared from covid. The scratches also make up how many people were torn from their families.

Why did I name my sculpture The Crazy House? Well as you can see it has lots of parts that stick out and just stuff that looks odd. also another thing is how the color pattern changes a lot.

What did I think about when I was making The Crazy House? Well I was thinking about what it should look like and the name.

I made this design because I wanted to show how we are stuck inside our houses just like the Crisis and how the plants are in a box trying to get out and be free. I call it The Transformer because its talking about how the plant is growing throughout it's life and it is transforming but the twist is it's stuck inside of a type box like thing.

I called it "Blue Cow" because it's blue and black and white, so sorta like a cow there!

The sculpture I made is called "Land and Fire Meet."

This connects to "THE CRISIS" because it represents a real life thing. The CRISIS represents the things that are currently happening. And my sculpture represents the forest fires that have been happening recently in Australia. 

The reason why I named it that is because it has a specific floor color scheme, which is 3/4 green and 1/4 red which symbolizes fire covering land because forest fires are happening a lot now. And with the bridge-like floor, it bends and can look like it starts to take over the land.

I called it"For my Father" because Fathers Day is coming up and I wanted to give it to my dad.

My inspiration for the Quarantine was how we were trapped in our homes and we had no idea what was happening, and at the time things were hectic. It symbolizes being inside quarantining and not knowing what's going, so the world could be a crazy mess this is what the Quarantine symbolizes. A crazy warped building. My idea for the pot was you have a name on it and that name is symbolizing someones room and they can't leave like a plant trapped in a pot.

the name of the structure is "ABSTRACT" my inspiration for the structure is abstract paintings, and a bit of cubism, but not a lot, the process of making this was very fun! when I first started. I made many many mistakes, and it kept on falling and breaking apart, but I made sure that it wouldn't fall anymore, and added more pipe cleaners. the pipe cleaners are what makes the sculpture unique now. I added more of them into the straws to try and make them look like shapes, and wavy lines, like what some painters include in their abstract paintings. I have got to confess. the structure is pretty random, but from what I see, most abstract paintings are, but they have meaning to them, and so does my structure. the extra pipe cleaners in the straws represent the ups and downs in life, you may not see it that way but I do. the wavy lines represent some bumps you have in life, like if you have a huge problem but still manage to solve it. the ones like look like "(" represent the bad things in life. I tried to make it look like a claw. Imagine there is something bad holding you back from doing something, its like your being held with a claw from your shirt, kinda like how a cat would finally catch the mouse and it would hold it from one of its claws, or one claw would be on the mouses tail, stopping it from running away.

That right there is my build, "nature in the fire of planet earth". I wanted it to represent a crisis, so I imagined the world on fire. that would mean the animals (including and especially us) in chaos, but nature more so. i put the plant in the middle to represent how the planet is metaphorically on fire, and nature is smack dab in the middle. Hope you like my build.

I made my project based on the greenhouse in my basement, my greenhouse has a plant under the roof where the sun would hit the most to help my plant grow better. The planter is based off of the basic planters that hold the plants in my greenhouse.

My inspiration for The Barcode Flower and The Triangle of Hope is because since Covid is here everyone has to buy a lot of things and we need hope that Covid-19 will end soon. Barcode means to me that people buy a lot of things in this horrible pandemic. Hope means to me that people have to believe in other people. This project sybolizes to me that we can fight through this pandemic.

I picked this tiled because it looks like something from the future. Also it has a hanging part because it looks like a thing that would detach a mars rover.

I picked "YEET Mountain" because its shaped like a mountain.

I included a blue unicorn cuz blue is my favorite colors and unicorn is my favorite animal so I included a blue unicorn and a neon Blue Unicorn they're very hard to see in real life in the cat that's why I made that net that is sitting in the picture.

As you can see in the picture I need a net so then I could put my item in there connected to my plants. And I built this pentagon with a bunch of lines coming out of it and that looks pretty cool and it's mushy and squishy I can make it into a house or anything I want but I wanted to make it into a pentagon and then I put it on top at the decoration with like the sun and as my plant grows it will grow really big and tall and it would send you my thing and that piece of art will go on forever and ever endeavor Amex green when I'm alone for third grade in the people that go up to 2nd-grade answers for that pop for the plant project will probably show mine.

The music I listened to was JoJo Siwa songs it's so crazy crazy crazy when they serve you with drama on YouTube and it made me feel happy and gave me the urge to build a q and a pentagon.

I think my sculpture connects to the crisis because the crisis seems to be a plant prison, in my sculpture is a plant trapped in a tiny little house with no room to move.

My first design looked like a flower so I thought of nature, but my second design looked like a tiny house so I though of being cramped so that is why my sculpture is called Cramped.

I called my sculpture "The Skyscraper" because it looks like a skyscraper. I chose this design because we live in new york and there are some skyscrapers in new york city.

I called it "The Bird Cage" because it looks like it is in a cage but instead it is a plant, not a bird.

I called my sculpture "Heart Land" because the straws are shaped like a heart and it is a land of love.

I named it halloween duck because it started to look like a duck and I thought of halloween and here is halloween duck.

This is my creation. It's called "The Plant's Wobbly Tower." I call it that because it looks like a tower and it's wobbly. At first I wanted it to be like a chicken coop, then it was a house, then one tall tower, then two tall towers then three.

I call this " The Box" the reason why I call it this is because the structure is made out of boxes. I was thinking of making it look like a huge structure but then I got a flashback of when I was moving to my house and I had tons of boxes and that was in my mind and so I called it " The Box ".I also called it that because you can trap things in it and the plant is trapped like us in our houses.

my inspiration for my sculpture was for it to be crystal\ rock themed.I love crystals and rocks because they are really pretty and they remind my mystical creatures like dragons, fairy dust,ect. I've always been obsessed with magical creatures and pretty rocks and crystals because it always made me feel happy and crystals give you different Energies. The way that I built my sculpture was made because it looks like a giant crystal or Rock and the plant inside the crystal would be the mystical creature,it would be a trapped mystical creature in stuck in a cage that's made of crystals and even though that sounds kind of harsh because it's a creature that stuck in a cage it does somehow correspond to the sculpture the crises because a mystical creature stuck could be a crisis to it because they may not be able to get out

My title for this project is called: That One Square. I got inspired by a square box in my room that I had made myself. The square box has a huge plant inside of the square box, the square box has anime design and hand painted flowers. I wanted my project to represent that box. 

What were you considering or thinking of as you were constructing your piece?

I was thinking that it could be an open goal to let other people or things into that goal which makes the person or thing that made that goal for themselves,feel like they can't achieve that goal.

How does your sculpture connect to the idea of a crisis?

My plants name would be "The Open Goal." I would like that name because open goals have goalies and you are the goalie and you can't let anything in that goal so you can achieve it.

My sculpture connects to the idea of a crisis because it looks like a open goal,and if you have a open goal things could get in that goal which would block it and then you can not achieve that goal.

What title would you give your sculpture and why?

I named it the house because the build I made looked like a house.

The music I listened is Jazz music by Duke Ellington. The music made my hands dance on the clay and make little dens.I added a little toy dolfin because the plant is free like dolfins.

The flow is a unique art piece made by me, it's simple but unique. My inspiration was a green house full of plants. The Flow is a calming piece that when I look at it, it makes me feel like if i'm at a place with plants. The Flow symbolizes calming greenery.

I called my sculpture"The Bridge" because it was a bridge but then it fell over and then it broke so i just made a cube.

My Little Flower In A Box

My plant reminds me of the big boxes at Storm King Art Center. First, I put clay around the pot by circling it around the pot. Next, I put soil into the pot. Then I put the flower into the pot. Then I put more soil into the pot Next I poured water onto the flower. Lastly, I used straws and pipe cleaners to make a bigger box around the bottom of the pot and a smaller box to sit on top of the pot. The easiest part was using the straws and pipe cleaners. The hardest part was wrapping the clay around the pot. I noticed the flower does not stand up anymore.

My inspiration for this project was the rise in homelessness around the country. The homeless fight so hard, and all they want is shelter from the storm, like this little plant.

I also think it connects to The Crisis because the crosses that I drew is a crisis because of the people that killed jesus on the cross and that's a crisis. I call it a carry box because the two little looking handles kind of looks like you can carry it around. Saraji
