Universities in Argentina
In Argentina, there are more than 1,500,000 undergraduates, 60% of whom attend the 57 public universities that co-exist with the 46 private ones. Public university in Argentina is free, a feature that sets the country apart from others in the region.
The first public university, the National University of Córdoba, dates back to 1613, while the newest one was founded in 2016. There is a bill under consideration in Congress to start two more universities during this year.
Public national universities are distributed throughout the country and vary in size. The biggest ones are located in major hubs, such as Buenos Aires, La Plata, Santa Fe and Córdoba, all capitals. Far from the 35% of universities which have an average of 7,000
students are the University of Buenos Aires, with more than 320,000 undergraduates and the National University of La Plata, with 110,000 students. At the other end of the scale there are those which do not have more than 3,000 students. These new, small ones were created for many reasons, being an important one the need to curb the uprooting of countryside communities. Within this last category we find the National University of the Northwest of the Province of Buenos Aires (UNNOBA), where this project and this research group is affiliated. In this institution, there are around 7,000 students and 598 faculty members.
