(In the meantime, Antónia arrives…) (Antónia has a “Sardão” (gift) for Zé) &nbsp; Antónia – Forgive me José… I forgot to tell you that I also dance in my village’s folk dance group&nbsp;and we had the harvest party with performances and, dancing around. I forgot time.&nbsp; Zé – You are forgiven, for your smile rewarded the time I waited…&nbsp; &nbsp; Aunt Zefa – Excuses… Excuses… Ah! That lazy girl just thinks about looking pretty! &nbsp; Zé – Don´t care about what that old woman says, she is getting crazier each day. &nbsp; Aunt Zefa – Disrespectful, I am going to complain to the police and tell how disrespectful you are. (closes window) &nbsp; Antónia – Such an intruder! Zé – Yes, she is. The legend of “Cantarinha dos Namorados” (Boyfriends’ Pottery)

The Boyfriends’ Pottery is made of red clay and sprinkled with bright mica. The big pot symbolizes abundance, great future, and hope. The small one symbolizes the real life, uncertainties of the future and the small daily happiness. Cantarinha dos Namorados pot was used as a symbol of acceptance or refusal of a marriage proposal or engagement request. Whenever a boy decided to propose to a girl, he used to give her or her family a pot like this. If she accepted then they became engaged and if her parents allowed it they could set the date for their marriage. The gifts guests would give the couple such as golden bracelets, golden rings, golden hearts and crosses) were put inside the pot. Some people say that inside the pot guests could also put raffles and the bride had to choose and pick one up which would correspond to a special present.

Antónia – Zé, is getting late and I must go back home. Zé – We will set a date for a year from now. I will give you the traditional secret pot of Guimarães as proof of my love to you. We will go the Cruz de Pedra and get the pot of our life. &nbsp; (Set changes – Cruz de Pedra) Narrator – So it was. A year has passed since that crazy night in Sta. Luzia’s festivity. Now they were there, hugging the pot, thinking about how every instant of their lives would be like. (Zé gives the pottery to Antónia) &nbsp; Zé – Antónia, accept this pot as proof of my love for you. Antónia – I accept. Oh! How beautiful it is! In red clay sprinkled with such shiny mica! Zé – It is how our lives will be, shiny and happy. Antónia – I am looking forward the wedding! Zé – You know, the little pot represents the real-life, the faults and virtues of each one of us, the tears and the beliefs, the thousands of things that make a happy home. On the top of this pot is the peace dove. It will be the first role of our marriage, having children. Antónia – This pot is beautiful and with such a profound meaning, equal to the love we feel for each other. Zé – That’s right. This big pot also means the abundance that people wish to the couple. Antónia – Yes… Zé – It is for filling it with material goods that your parents and I will be giving you, like bracelets, rings, earrings, necklaces, gifts and heritages. Antónia – I am very happy… Zé – This is our grandparents’ tradition. Antónia – Oh Zé, it looks like a dream. Zé – It is not a dream, it is reality, and we will be eternally happy together… Antónia – This pot is magical, like my grandmother and aunt Micas da Quintã used to say. Narrator – This tale tells one of Guimarães traditions, the “Pot of Couples” another symbol of local traditions and history. &nbsp; THE END

Legend of the Cabreira Mountain Range and the Bird River&nbsp;

It is said that one day, a girl came to&nbsp;“Serra da Agra” from the sides of Spain. Unraveled, young and beautiful, she reached the border, which practically did not exist, and let herself be with her herd of goats, in the beautiful landscape that enchanted her. Legend says that on a sunny morning a very elegant knight came and while hunting with other hunters, became amazed by the shepherd girl. He greeted her nicely: - Good morning, beautiful Cabreira (shepherd girl)... You have the sunlight in your eyes. She smiled, embarrassed and answered with a trembling voice: -It's your eyes, Sir. I'm not worthy of your compliments... Then the gentleman signed his companions to turn away and slowly dismounted from the horse, with a smile of promise: - Listen, beautiful Cabreira (shepherd girl)... for you, and only for you, I will abandon the hunt and stay in this place... to worship you! And so began a love affair, which lasted hours, days, maybe weeks... Knight and Maiden exchanged their oaths, as if only they existed in the world, there, the two alone, cloistered in a paradisiacal nook in Agra’s Mountain Rang... But everything comes to an end, so the People and the Truth say.

Narrator: I’m going to tell you a legend that lives in the imagination of people that lived and still live in Guimarães and its surroundings. For almost three years now that Antónia de Matadouços and José Carpinteiro da Quinta do Picoto met, at 8th of December, at Senhora da Conceição’s festivity. She sold chestnuts and he bought almost them all, just to get to know her and to talk to her. Aunt Zefa, problematic and nosy, was always at the window attentive to everything. She spent all day snooping about what the girls did during the party. &nbsp; (Meeting on December’s 8th, S. Conceição’s day) &nbsp; Zé – Good afternoon, today the chestnuts look tasty! I want a bag of them. Antónia – These are the last ones, they are very hot, ready to eat. (Antónia gives the chestnuts to Zé) &nbsp; Aunt Zefa (at the window) – How embarrassing! They are so close… For God’s sake! &nbsp; Zé – Good afternoon aunt Zefa! It’s very cold! You should close the window before you catch a cold. Aunt Zefa – Insolent! Rude! I will tell your dad how insolent you are. (gets off window) &nbsp; Zé – This old woman, always snooping around! Antónia – Don’t care about it, it’s typical! Zé – I know, I know her very well. Antónia – I must go… it’s getting late, and the chestnuts are over. Zé – I wait for you on the 13th, at Sta. Luzia’s party. Antónia – I will be there… &nbsp; Narrador: In those times in Sta. Luzia’s festivity it was a tradition that boyfriend and girlfriend share gifts between them. “Sardões” for the girls and “Passarinhas” for the boys, which were candy made with sugar and wheat flour. Zé was agitated and very anxious because of this date. He realized that Antónia was the woman he would like to spend his entire life with. &nbsp; (Meeting on December’s 13th, Sta. Luzia’s festivities) (Zé has the Passarinha (gift) for Antónia) &nbsp; Zé – My hands and feet are cold. Antónia is taking a long time. Did she forget about our date, or is she just playing around?... Aunt Zefa – I see you have a gift… she is not coming. Ah, ah, ah… &nbsp;

The Legend of the cutler (blacksmith) and the miraculous water of Guimarães

Guimarães is a city with great traditions that concern cutlery. This Legend is about a cutter from Creixomil (Guimarães) that emigrated to Brazil without anything except his hands to work and his homesickness (Saudade). When he arrived in Brazil, he soon got a job in a workshop. But his job didn't seem to succeed. As cutters needed to use water to shape the cutlery they made, he missed the water from Guimarães which was, according to him, the best to shape the utensils he made. Every day he complained about it. One day, his boss, fed up with the cutter’s complaints, decided, in secret, to send a barrel from Guimarães of such miraculous water. As soon as it arrived, the water was placed in the barrel where the cutter used to fetch the water to temper the iron and steel.&nbsp;While the cutler was working, he dipped the iron in the barrel of cold Guimarães water and soon he realized that was water from his land because his work became a success again.
