Did you know that in ʻŌlelo Hawai`i, the word for bird is MANU. Can you say manu?

Today, we are going to talk about manu that live by the sea. We call these manu, seabirds.

Ancient voyagers believed that seeing a flock (group) of `iwa near shore was a sign that stormy weather was approaching.

We usually only see birds when they are flying high in the sky. Have you ever wondered how big these manu are?

One way to measure birds is by their wingspan.

What is wingspan? Wingspan is the space between the tip of one wing to the tip of the other.

For us, we can stretch out our arms from side to side to find our wingspan. 

The manuokū is in the middle. It is not the biggest or smallest of the three manu.

The noio feed in flocks (groups) for iʻa (fish). Voyagers knew where fish might be by observing the noio.

When we measure, we often use the terms inches and feet.

Each section is called an inch. Every time we get 12 inches together we get 1 foot. So 12 inches is the same as 1 foot. 12 inches = 1 foot
