Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury (Farrokh Bulsara) was born in 1946 in Zanzibar. He was a British rock singer and songwriter most famous for the band Queen. He became a friend with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor in 1969 and started performing with them. Queen initially failed to attract much notice beyond the UK. The album Sheer Heart Attack (1974) shot up the international charts, and A Night at the Opera (1975) sold even better. By the early 1980s the Queen became an international phenomenon. Their most famous performance was at the charity concert Live Aid in 1985. One of Freddie's last performances was with Montserrat Caballé with the song Barcelona (1987). In 1991 Mercury announced that he was diagnosed with AIDS. He died in England a day later from complications related to AIDS.
