Middle Colony Founding

New York- New York was originally founded by the Dutch as a trading post, it became a royal colony under King James II. It was also a birthday present for King Charles.

Delaware- Delaware was founded by the Dutch and Swedes for trading and profit for example beaver fur.

Religious Freedom

Pennsylvania- Are you a Quaker? It’s founder William Penn was a Quaker who was persecuted in England for his religious beliefs. He created a safe place for people to enjoy freedom of religion.

New Jersey- Founded for religious freedom. It went from the Dutch, Swedes, Finns, the British and then settlers attracted for the promise of religious freedom.

Farming is a good way to profit in the Middle Colonies! The Middle Colonies have great soil and weather for growing crops. A popular crop is tobacco because people like to smoke it. Another is Indigo because that make purple dye for clothing!

Whaling is when groups of people are sent out on ships to go kill whales. It might sound mean to the whales but you need food right? It is a dangerous job that requires many people, teamwork, and weapons.

Mining is an exciting job because you can find things like gold, iron, and different types on minerals/jewels and sell them to make money!

You don’t want to go to the Southen colonies! They enslave humans treating them like animals to profit. In Pennsylvania there are some freed blacks living there! Some are educated, business owners. For example sailmaking , reverends, teachers. Many of the colonies promise emancipation of enslaved Africans children after PA 1767, NJ 1804. But there is a small population of Freed Blacks.The weather is also extremely hot!

Why go to the New England Colonies? In MA they have the Puritans who control everything there. For example if you miss one day of church there you would be punished harshly to the extreme of people spitting on you, calling you names, and even the freedom of punching you! Who would want to be controlled like that?
