Most of the images used in this teen magazine were not taken by us but previously published on the internet with the license to reuse/modify them. We also used websites that offer free-license photos and images (like pixabay, for example). Where possible, we have linked the source in the photos. George Floyd: We wrote about this topic because we think that racism is an important issue, but most people neglect this topic, so we wanted to make people aware of it.

Back to school: We chose the topic, because the question if and how we can go back to school is very important at the moment.

8 Minutes and 46 Seconds: George Floyd is killed by Police

On May 25 in Minneapolis, USA, a police officer arrested George Floyd, a 46-year old black man, after a supermarket employee had called the police and told them that George Floyed had bought cigarettes with a false 20-dollar bill. Seventeen minutes after the first police car arrived, George Floyd was dead. He suffocated after one of the policemen called Chauvin kneeled on his neck.

The following days

The next day, all four police officers who were involved were fired. Chauvin was charged with the murder of G. Floyd, and the other officers were also charged with "aiding and abetting" the murder. This means that they looked on and helped when George Floyd was murdered.

There were many demonstrations and protests after Floyd was murdered. They protestested against racism and police brutality. In Minneapolis, measures were introduced by police to reduce violence.

Back to school - opening schools before summer holidays?!?

Since March schools have been closed in Germany because of the Corona pandemic. There was only homeschooling and digital learning for the kids, no more sitting in their classrooms with their friends. From the end of May, all classes should go to school, each class on another day and for only one day of the week.

Then, in the beginning of June, the politicians decided that from 15th June, all kids from the Elementary School must go to school for the last two weeks of the school year. Then, the summer holidays start for all of them. In contrast to that, the students from the higher classes still go to school for one day a week till the holidays start.

The plan of the politicians is that after the summer holidays everything should be more normal again. This is the hope of all: kids, teachers and parents. But nobody knows, what the virus will do in the future.

But things are not going back to normal.

The kids are divided into groups that have lessons at different times and in the breaks, they must stay as far apart as possible. There is a hygiene plan, too: you must regularly wash your hands, disinfect and keep 1.5 meters apart from your's classmates.

Corona Alert app

After a few weeks of development, the German Corona Warning app is ready.

The app was already downloaded over 6.4 million times in the first 24 hours. Unlike in China, where the app collects more information about you, the German warning app does not locate all of the users. The app only gives you an indication that you have been in contact with an ill person and the app only shows the day you had contact, not even the time, so you only vaguely know you were in contact.

But there is a problem: Health boards (Gesundheitsämter) are overrun with requests because many people find the phone number in the app too complicated and then call their health boards. Still, Ute Teichert, chair of the Federal Association of Doctors in Public Health, sees the app as a good way to fight the pandemic.

She has already downloaded it herself and would advise everyone to do so.
