Oprah Winfrey had a sad childhood. She was born January 29, 1954. Oprah grew up in poverty in rural Mississippi to a single teenage mother. She later was raised in inner-city Milwaukee. But at a young age she was molested and became pregnant at age 14. Her baby died in infancy. But this did not hold her back.

Oprah first started as a news anchor and reporter for Baltimore's WJZ-TV in 1976. After attending Tennessee State University she got a job at WLAC-TV. As both the youngest anchor, and first black female anchor. But on September 8, 1986, The Oprah Winfrey show aired on national television for the first time. This was a huge success for Oprah at this time. Her talk show made her one of the most powerful people in show business. This also made her very wealthy, and one of the most influential women.
