ELAGSE1RL4: Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.
Reading

Standard:
Student Learning Outcomes:
I CAN determine words and phrases that convey emotion and appeal to my senses in a story or poem.
I CAN express the emotion and sensations I feel from words in character traits drawing.

For this lesson proposal, students would study the story "The Feeling Flower" by Leah Dakroub. This story teaches students about emotions and is in alignment with this specific standard. This book uses kid-friendly language that can easily be broken down and studied to determine what emotions and senses they feel from the words the author used. Throughout the week, students would pick a specific work and draw the flower that conveys that work and emotion. For example, if students chose the word "gloomy" they would draw their happy flower with a sad face and wilted petals.

A good extension for this activity would be a mood color pallet. I included an example of a "Sad" flower that I made myself. In this model, there is a list of words to describe a "Sad" emotion and colors that students could use to color the flower. The colors I chose for this pallet are commonly associated with the "sad" emotion. I think this is a good lesson for students because they can associate words with colors in an expressive way.

ELAGSE1RL9: Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories
Rounded Rectangle
Student Learning Outcomes:
I CAN transform into this character by changing my voice, face, and body (Performing Arts).

I CAN compare and contrast characters based on their experiences and story lines.
This lesson integrates art through performance and design through character dress-up. Students would have partners. Students would then read the story and choose which character they would like to dress up and perform as. Students would need to dress up and act out what adventures and experiences the two characters experienced to compare and contrast the two story lines. This is a fun project that I learned from a teacher on YouTube that uses these techniques often in her classroom (YouTube link on citation page/last page). This is also a fun way for students to be expressive and not just read the story but "be" the story.
For example: If students were reading "Curious George" one student could dress up as George and the other would be The Man with the Yellow Hat. Students would then choose a scene from the story to act out. More strategies for incorporating this lesson into our classroom is in the Youtube link on the last page/ Citation page of this project book. https://youtu.be/--2FBzyeZNo

I CAN read words with inflectional endings.
I CAN use music/rap to understand learning objectives.

ELAGSE1RF3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding f. Read words with inflectional endings.
Student Learning Outcomes:
In this lesson, you can implement music, specifically rap to understand the learning objective for this standard. Youtube is a good resource for finding sounds that are educational and related to standards. For this specific lesson, I will include a link to the song I would use to incorporate this objective. The link will be included in the last/citation page of this proposal book.
Students love to get up and sing. Using music is not only engaging but it gives students an opportunity to express and move around, all while learning. Music, specifically rap, is good for memory and can help students remember key elements and translate that into their work.

This picture is another way you can incorporate singing/rapping for education. This is an anchor chart that uses rhyme to show how inflectional endings work. Both the Youtube Video and this chart are easy ways to incorporate art into your classroom.

ELAGSE1RL10: With prompting and support, read prose and poetry of appropriate complexity for grade 1.
Rounded Rectangle
Student Learning Outcomes:
I CAN read poetry and prose with prompting and support.

I CAN produce a short poem.
For this lesson, you can easily integrate the art of poetry into this poetry and prose standard. Expose your students to pieces of poetry appropriate for their level and expose them to the different types of poetry. After practicing reading and listening to different poems with your class, allow students to create their own, short poems to read aloud to integrate performing arts as well.
On the last/citation page of this book, I included an article that explains the importance of poetry in student learning.

MGSE1.G.1(e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes
Student Learning Outcomes:
I CAN build and draw shapes and their defining attributes.

I CAN use geometric shapes to create art.
Rounded Rectangle
For this lesson, students will study the use of Geometric shapes (e.g..Triangle, rectangle, squares.) to create their own stained glass window out of construction paper. This idea comes from an awesome article that describes ways to integrate art into mathematics. This article link will be placed on the last/citation page of this proposal book.
