Bessie Coleman

Was told she "couldn't" become a pilot which made her try harder.

She wanted to amount to something probably due to growing up poor. 

She learned to speak French in order to go to flight school in France. 

Bessie was born in 1892 Texas and had 12 siblings. Her family had no money.

She tried to go to college but didn't have enough money. 

She got her pilot license before Amelia Earhart. 

First African American female pilot with international licence.  

Had to go to another country to realize her dream.

First African American woman in America to make a public flight.

She knew that she needed to brand herself in order to raise funds to start an aviation school.

She worked as a laundress and manicurist and saved money to become a pilot. 

She got turned from from flight school because female and black. 

Heard stories of WWI pilots which sparked her interest in flying. 

She is considered inspirational because she never gave up on her dream and found ways to work around obstacles.
