The West Coast is the Best Coast 

Intel is best known for the microprocessor. This was disruptive because it was small enough to be able to bu used in portable computers which allowed more people to have their own computer.

On Day 1 we flew from Vancouver to San Diego. When we landed we went to lunch at Hodad’s and I had a delicious bacon cheeseburger. After lunch we went to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. It had many rare pine trees and it was beautiful. We then went to La Jolla where we watched the sunset, played frisbee, and saw many harbour seals. Lastly we went to Miguel’s and had a delicious dinner. I had 2 chicken enchiladas and they were amazing. 

HTH is an amazing school. They focus on teaching the children in a way that allows them to not only learn but enjoy learning. They don’t use textbooks or have tests because that limits a students learning. They learn in a way that allows the students to take in lots of knowledge and care about what they are learning. The students get to be creative and have control over the projects they do. They have a voice and it is listened to by their teachers. The teachers really care about what the students think and that helps them create a strong relationship. HTH is disrupting the old way students learned and is changing the future. They are making their students more prepared for the real world by doing work that is relevant to it. I would like to bring back the freeness of speech HTH has to seycove. They talk about the important stuff no matter how bad it is which I feel is important. They take time out of their day to discuss what’s going on in the world and how it is effecting everyone. Everyone is allowed to voice their opinion on the matter without being judged. Hopefully someday soon all schools will be like HTH.

The Hotel del Coronado was built in 1888 . It famously starred in this movie “Some Like it Hot”.

Fisherman’s Wharf is very popular tourist attraction in San Francisco. Souvenir shops, crab stalls, and clam chowder in sour dough bread bowls fill the area. It  is known for being the location of Pier 39 and Ghirardelli Square. 

Inside the prison was very grey and plain. The prisoners had almost no privacy, not even when they showered. The cells were tiny and in each cell there was a bed, a desk, a toilet, a sink and a couple of shelves. The prisoners could decorate their cell with artwork and pictures. There was an outdoor space for that they got to go to for a few hours each day. They all had to be back in their cells by 3:30 everyday.

You can’t film in Apple because there is a lot of valuable information in there that they would like to be secret. If you filmed anything you weren’t supposed to and it got released on the internet Apple would not be happy.

This was the house of the Grateful Dead. They created music that would probably sound awful to us but sounded amazing to all of the hippies high on LSD and brought everyone together. 

The free clinic was opened by David Smith for all of the young people who couldn’t take care of themselves and were dying on the streets. The mayor hated the hippies and tried to close the clinic. The city came together and held a fundraiser to keep the clinic running.

Twin peaks was opened in 1972 by Mary Ellen Cunha and Peggy Foster. It was the first Gay Bar with windows so people could see inside. All gay bars before than were hidden away so Twin Peaks was a huge change for the community and allowed LGBTQ+ people to be more open.

Steve Wozniak developed Apple 1 in 1976. It was one of the first personal computers that could actually do something. The problem was that it was $666.66 and it was only a single board. Users had to add a power supply, keyboard, storage system, and display to make it fully functional. It was the start of apple and helped start one of the most popular computer companies that has changed the world. 

This trip has taught me so much on disruption. Coming into this unit I heard the word disruption and immediately thought of something negative. I thought a disruption was something that negatively changes something. I have learned that a disruption isn’t always negative and are more often positive. I also thought a disruption was an event but I learned that it can be an item or even an idea. Getting to travel to all of these amazing places and learn more about certain disruptions was really cool. I am not a person who likes change and many disruptions have changed a lot of things. Seeing how positive the effects of some disruptions has opened my mind more to change. The iPhone is a disruption and I love my phone. I have also learned that some disruptions are negative and can badly affect a lot of people. For example Air BnB is a negative disruption because it is causing rent to go up in some places and many people are losing their homes. Some disruptions can be positive and negative. For instance Uber is a disruption that is positive for the people that use it. It allows them to access a cheaper way of transportation than taking a taxi. Uber is a negative disruption for taxi drivers because less people are using them and they are losing business. Disruptions are happening constantly weather we like the or not. I feel like we need to learn to change with the disruptions because there is something new constantly and if you don’t stay up to date you will be left behind. Almost everything was a disruption to somebody at some point. Disruptions are everywhere and that’s a good thing.

Alcatraz was almost impossible to escape from because even if you could escape the building you wouldn’t be able to survive the swim from the island to shore. It was way too long of a distance to swim and the water was too cold. That is why there have been no confirmed successful escapes from Alcatraz.

Meeting new people can be scary but it can also be really exciting. When Ajok and I met we immediately connected. Even though we live in different parts of the world we have a lot in common. She was extremely nice and funny and I had so much fun hanging out with her. I learned a lot about high tech high from her. She explained how they learn at HTH and how she feels it will help her in the future. She also reminded me that meeting new people is really fun and you can make amazing friends.

Activities like balloon rides are very important to zoos. They are a good way to draw people into the park by offering something exciting. They are also a good way to raise more money to help gather more research on the animals 

My Name is Claire Teegen and I’m 15 years old.

I love to watch hockey, specifically the Vancouver Canucks. I also love working out and try to do so at least twice a week.

I live in Vancouver and I love living here because I am close to the ocean. I love swimming and boating in the summer.

I love going shopping and going to the movies with my friends. 

Although working on an aircraft carrier would be an amazing experience, I would not be able to do it. The sleeping area on the carrier is small and extremely crowded. I am more of an introvert and I need alone time which I wouldn’t even be able to get when I’m sleeping. The beds are tiny and I wouldn’t be able to sleep. Also I would probably bump my head every time I woke up.

Google is best known for its search engine. This was disruptive because it allowed people to access so much more information way faster than before. You can now know the answer to almost anything in seconds.

Events like Taco Tuesday draw people in because they get a better deal on food and it is a good way for a restaurant to get more business. If people come to a restaurant for cheap food and they really enjoy it they might come more often and make that restaurant one of their top choices. It also disrupts other restaurants that can’t compete with the low prices.

Students studied chemical processes and applied what they learned to create high-end quality soap.

The Soundtrack of Our Lives was a project where the students put together a playlist of songs that represent the chapters of their lives.

The students had to paint a picture that showed the truth of depiction, composition, and colour. 

Stanford is an amazing school. It is one of the top universities is the USA. It’s purpose is to take some of the brightest young people and give them a place to learn where they can use their knowledge to help change the world. Most people who go to Stanford are extremely smart, but you don’t have to be a genius to get in.  Just like PLP, Stanford doesn’t have a minimum grade average for you to get in. They look at what you have done and who you are as a person. They care more about what you plan on doing than what you have done. When you apply to Stanford you are applying to the school and not a specific program. That means that you can change your mind at any time and do whatever you want. This allows students to explore many career paths and make sure they are do something they love because when people love something they tend to put more effort into it. Similar to HTH it is a very diverse school. People from all over the world go to Stanford and they do everything they can to make sure everyone feels accepted. They have many buildings and clubs for different people so everyone has a place where they feel they belong. Stanford has many programs and they are all very good so you can go to Stanford for almost anything. Stanford is a smaller school so it allows the professors to connect with their students. The professors listen to what each student needs and do whatever they can to help because they want their students to succeed. 

Cabrillo led the first European expedition to explore what is now the west coast of the United States. It is believed that he anchored his flagship on Point Loma’s east shore near Cabrillo National Monument. 

On really windy nights when the wind was blowing in just the right direction the inmates could hear sounds from people off of the island. They could hear laughter from parties and other sounds. This could be disruptive because it is allowing them to hear what they are missing out on. It reminds them that there are other people with freedom. It might have made some of the prisoners want to escape more so they could be back with other people.

At Cafe Coyote they famously hand make all of their tortillas and they are delicious!

Old town San Diego is the historical centre of San Diego. In 1769 it was California’s first settlement with only a mission and a fort. It is now a small town full of Mexican shops and restaurants. It helps unite the cultures and remember how San Diego was started.

HTH welcomes visitors to the school so they can educate them on a new way to learn. By allowing people to see how it works there they are spreading their ideas. They are hoping more schools can implement their way of learning so the future will be filled with intelligent people with passion.

An aircraft carrier is the biggest weapon in the USA. It is a giant ship that carries many fighter planes for war. They make it easy to travel to far away countries with all of their weapons. They often hold over 4500 people for many months. The average age of the people who serve is 19 and a half which is very young. There carriers are not only extremely powerful weapons but just owning them makes less people want to go to war against the USA. They look extremely imtidating and every other country is afraid of them.

Disruption: Disruption is what happens when something new is introduced that changes the way something is done or used in a positive or negative way.

This field study is all about technology that was introduced and disrupted the way we live. We will be visiting the home to some of the biggests disruptions in the world. 

We went to the San Diego Safari Park. We started off the day with an educational tour where we got to go into the elephant enclosure and see a training session. We also went on a tram tour and in a hot air ballon over the safari. 

There are only three northern white rhinos left in the world. There is one male rhino and two females and they live in central Kenya. The reason this species is almost extinct is because of poachers. They can’t get the rhinos to conceive and if they don’t find a solution the species will go instinct. As a last resort they are trying to use another species of rhino to be a surrogate so the northern white rhino doesn’t become extinct. If all rhinos go extinct there will be no animal to trim the grass and make as much fertilizer as they do. It is humanities fault that they are endangered and we have to do something to help. 

This field school has made me start to seriously think about my future. I am heading into my senior years of high school and what I do is actually starting to matter. Going to all of these amazing places and seeing what all these amazing people have done made me start to think about what I want to do. A lot of the people in Silicon Valley are quite young and aren’t that much older than me. I don’t think I want to go down the same career path as them but I want to be doing something important by that age too. Visiting Stanford got me thinking about the universities I want to go to. Obviously I want to got to Stanford now but that probably isn’t going to happen. Going to Stanford taught me a lot about university. I was really nervous to pick what courses I should take because I thought I would be stuck in that career path forever. I learned that I can change my mind as many times as I need to because it is important that I do something I love. Right now I have a pretty solid idea of the path I want to take but that could change many times before I graduate university. Currently I want to have a career in health science. Right now I am trying to keep my future as open as possible by taking many different courses. I want to try a little of everything in high school that I can so I know what I like doing.  I want to make sure I am prepared to do anything so when the time comes for me to make a decision I’ll know I’m making the right one. 

The Computer History Museum is an amazing place to learn about technology. It has computers from when they were just calculators  to what they are now. It has one of the first computers ever made and tons of information on all computers. It allows people to learn how things were done before you had unlimited knowledge at your fingertips. It shows the process of how computers got to be as amazing as they are now. Many people don’t understand how amazing the computers we have now are so this allows them to see just how much computers have changed throughout time. It also shows the disruption computers have had on us. It shows examples of ways we use computers today that help is survive. For example it has a exhibit on MRI’s and how we use computers to find out if someone is sick and injured. We also use computers to find missing people from a long time ago by generating a picture of what they might look like now. The people at the Computer History Museum just want to educate everyone on what amazing things people have done in the best. By showing poeople what others have done it might inspire them to try and do something amazing too. By allowing people to see the process of the creation of computers they understand just how complicated making something like that is. It may just inspire the next Robert Noyce or Bill Gates to go out and make something amazing.

Getting to listen to Brandon and Scott was amazing. They have both been working in the tech business for so long and they had an answer to every question we asked. It was so cool to get an inside perspective on the tech business. The only knowledge I had on it before was from videos that tried to make Silicon Valley seem like the most amazing place in the world. It was nice to hear how Silicon Valley actually is. I learned so much about start ups from them because they have both worked in successful and unsuccessful buisnesses. It was really cool hearing Scott talk about working on the original iPhone. I had no idea that it was such a small group working on it. I found it interesting how they felt that working in a smaller group made it a lot easier to make a successful product. By working in a small group everyone knew exactly what they were doing and they were able to communicate with each other easily. When you work in a big group ideas get scratched a lot and it’s harder to communicate so people end up doing pointless work. They also talked about how much easier it would have been to do work at the beginning of their careers if they had the technology we have today. It shows how far technology has come and how amazing the technology we have is.
