The programme to put a man on the moon was called Apollo. 

A total of 12 astronauts have walked on the moon. The astronauts conducted scientific research there and studied the lunar surface. They collected moon rocks to bring back to Earth.

The Apollo Programme resulted in American astronauts making a total of 11 spaceflights and walking on the moon. The first four flights tested the equipment used in the Apollo Program.

When the two astronauts were finished working on the surface, they got back in the Lunar Module and launched. It went back into orbit around the moon and connected with the Command Module. The two astronauts got back into the Command Module. They left the Lunar Module behind and flew back to Earth. The Lunar Module crashed into the moon. The Command Module landed in the ocean, and a ship picked up the astronauts.

After they returned to Earth the astronauts had to go into quarantine. They were given medical checkups to make sure they had not brought anything back with them. In this picture they are being welcomed back to Earth by President Richard Nixon.

They also left behind an American flag. Because there is no wind on the moon the flag had to have a support to make it look like it was flying.

The astronauts left lots of footprints behind them on the moon.

Buzz Aldrin (born 1930) was the second man to set foot on the Moon. Aldrin retired from NASA in 1971 to become commandant of the Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in California. In 1988 he legally changed his name to Buzz Aldrin. He has written two children’s books, Reaching for the Moon (2005) and Look to the Stars (2009). He also appeared in one of the Transformers Movies and his name inspired the character of Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story movies.

Neil Armstrong was born in 1930. He was the first person to set foot on the Moon. As he stepped onto the Moon’s dusty surface, he spoke the now famous words, “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” Armstrong retired from NASA in 1971. From 1971 to 1979 he was a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. He died on August 25, 2012, in Cincinnati, Ohio

Two types of rockets were used for the Apollo program. The first flights used the smaller Saturn I rocket. It was about as tall as a 22-storey building. This rocket had two stages. That means it was made of two parts. When the first part ran out of fuel, it dropped away from the other and burned up in Earth&apos;s atmosphere. The second part continued flying. 

The other flights used the more powerful Saturn V rocket. This three-stage rocket sent the Apollo spacecraft to the moon. It was about as tall as a 36-storey building.

Michael Collins was the command module pilot of Apollo 11. He orbited above the Moon while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on its surface. Apollo 11 was Collins’s last space mission. In 1971 Collins became the first director of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., and in 1978 he became undersecretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Collins wrote several books, including an account of the Apollo 11 mission, Carrying the Fire (1974), and a history of the American space program, Liftoff (1988).

The first moon landing occurred on July 20, 1969, on the Apollo 11 mission. The crew of Apollo 11 was Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. Armstong and Aldrin walked on the lunar surface while Collins remained in orbit around the moon. When Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon, he said,

&quot;That&apos;s one small step for (a) man; one giant leap for mankind.&quot;

The Apollo spacecraft were launched on top of the Saturn V rocket. The Saturn V was made of three stages. The first two stages used up their fuel reaching orbit. The third stage was used to push the Apollo Command Module and Lunar Module to the moon. Once the spacecraft reached the moon, the two modules separated from each other. Two astronauts in the Lunar Module landed on the lunar surface. The third astronaut stayed in the Command Module in orbit around the moon.

This is a photo of the Lunar Module, also known as The Eagle descending towards the surface of the Moon. Michael Collins had to remain with the Command Module so he never got a chance to set foot on the Moon.

On the Moon the astronauts ran some experiments and collected samples of Moon rock to bring home for more tests.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is an independent agency of the United States government responsible for the space program and research. President Dwight D. Eisenhower established NASA in 1958 to encourage peaceful applications in space science.

Because there are no winds on the Moon Neil Armstrongs footprint is still on the Moon and will be forever.

As Captain of the mission Neil Armstrong had the honour of being the first human to set foot on the Moon.

Its quite incredible to think that only 60 years after the Wright brothers had first flown using mechanical power that we would be able to put a man on the Moon.

On the May 25, 1961 President John F. Kennedy (the president of the United States of America) spoke to their parliament. He was worried that the United States was falling behind the Soviet Union in technology. He challenged the nation to put a man on the moon before the end of the decade.
