Rudahigwa was king of Rwanda from 1931 to 1959, preceded by his father, who was deposed by colonial rulers. As king, Rudahigwa initially collaborated with Belgian colonial rulers, but toward the end of his reign he spoke out against colonialism. He died in 1959 under circumstances that remain suspicious. Rudahigwa was also the first Rwandan king baptized in a Christian church
 Rwanda is most famous for the horrific genocide that devastated the country in 1994, when almost a million people, mostly Tutsis, were murdered by the Hutu majority.
