Things you should know about hurricanes.

Hurricanes usually form in tropical areas. They have a spiraling shape and use warm water as energy. They usually travel at 10-20 mph ,but their winds can travel up to 200 mph. They can cause tornadoes , big waves , and flooding. The whole in the middle of the hurricane is called the eye of the hurricane. Where the eye is does not get much rain or water , but the area near the eye of the hurricane gets the most amount of water and rain.

Names and Numbers

Meteorologists usually give hurricanes names and numbers .
Names- Meteorologists give names to hurricanes. The names go in alphabetical order. Our last hurricane was named Florence so that means that our next hurricane's name will start with a G.
Numbers-

Meteorologist give hurricanes numbers. For example a 1 is still a hurricane but it won't be that bad, but a 5 is really bad with lots of rain and water and some flash flooding.

What to do in case of a emergency.

If a hurricane is coming you should evacuate immediately. This could do damage to you or your house if you stay.
If you do choose to stay you should do the following:
- get all pets inside and put them in cages
- get everything dangerous that could fly around and hurt something or some one inside
- if possible put wooden boards on doors and windows (if those are not available you can just put heavy materials on them)
- stay away from lower parts of shelter that could flood easily
- NEVER GO OUTSIDE WHEN THE STORM IS HITTING
If you choose to evacuate do the following:
- get as far as away from the hurricane as possible
- do it early so you don't have to drive on flooded streets which can be dangerous
- get away from water
