Oregon ‘17

I learned so much at Fort Stevens today. I think one of the most incredible things I learned is that Fort Stevens was actually bombed by the Japanese in 1942. The Japanese sent a submarine to the Oregon Coast.  On June 21, the Japanese sent 17 rounds at the fort’s beach front. The men at Fort Stevens chose not to fire back at the submarine. The main reason for this is that the submarine was out of range and they did not want to give away their position. There was no damage or casualties. 

I’m excited to see canon beach. It has one of the most photographed natural structure and it should be very cool. It will be interesting to see the beach and its natural formations. It is such a tourist destination and it’s going to be cool to say I’ve visited it. 

I’m excited to see a nudibranch. When reading about it in the book, it sounded very cool and it would be amazing to actually see one 

Columbia River Maritime Museum Crossing the Bar Section

I don’t think I would be willing to “cross the bar”. Initially, looking at the bar from where we went, it didn’t seem that dangerous. Now, looking at all the videos at exhibits about it, I would be inclined NOT to cross the bar. Waves can be over 40 feet, and even some of the largest cargo ships can be tossed around

My name is Niklas Jaakkola. My friends call me Nik. I love playing golf and I think the PLP program is very cool. The trip to Oregon was lots of fun. 

You can’t take the rocks home because they are a nonrenewable resource. If everyone took one home, there wouldn’t be any more rocks left, and because they are so unique, they don’t want anyone taking them

I thought the Audubon society was very cool. I like it how they were extremely committed to birds and their well-being. It was refreshing to see that they were so into what they did. The were very nice and cool. It was amazing to find out that they still are in existence even though John James Audubon lived nearly two hundred years ago. Audubon was extremely interested in birds and he worked hard to save their lives from people who killed the, because they thought they were pretty. Because of this, this bird society was named after him. The society was incorporated all the way back in 1905. I think having places like these are important because they try their hardest to bring injured birds back into the wild. This is also a great place because they take animals in and help them completely for free.

Activities like these are crucial to small towns because tourist attractions like these bring in people and revenue

Hatfield Marine Science Center Speedy Science

Our group had a red male crab race against a female red crab and we timed them running down a tube. The red male crab won the race easily

I think having the tidal wave machine in the visitor centre is a great idea. For one, the machine draws people in with the big signs. The LEGO lets little kids and adults all have fun trying to build an wall to block an tsunami. The last thing is that if you see this right away, you will be excited to view the rest of the science centre. 

Columbia River Maritime Museum First Nations Section

The first colonists that came had quite an impact on First Nations people. The colonists brought materials never seen before to First Nations people and they were eager to trade for them. 

 Cannon Beach is most well known for Haystack Rock. It is called the 3rd largest monolith in the world.

Sea lions foreheads grow bigger the more they bark. The bigger the forehead, the more impressed the lady sea lions will be

Tillamook cheese was founded in 1909. In 1850, dairy farms started springing up in the Tillamook valley. The settlers realized that Oregon’s cool, wet climate was perfect for grass, which  was perfect for raising cows. In 1909, small local creameries came on together to make the best dairy products, and the rest was history

Hatfield Marine Science Center R.O.V. Challenge

The ROV challenge was unique and fun. However, it was quite challenging, and our group found that out easily. We had an idea for our ROV and we tried to make  it work. After quite a few struggles, we figured out that this idea wouldn’t work so we scrapped it and attempted to make a second model. We also ran into some trouble with the second model. Since everyone else was a little bit ahead, they had used all the useful PVC pipes and we had a pipe shortage for our second model. We eventually got enough pipes together to make a decent model that worked out pretty well. Ours picked up objects pretty easily. The only notable problem was that our model didn’t go up to the surface very well. Although it went down and left and right, our model wouldn’t go upwards. Overall, I thought it was very fun. 

Hatfield Marine Science Center Estuary Investigation

I think citizen scientists are very important. Letting people go out onto the estuary is a very cool thing for them to do. When they do that, it lets ordinary people that aren’t scientists see what happens in just an average day. Without what they taught us, I’d never have known all the things about the estuary. 

Depoe Bay is known as the world’s smallest navigatable harbor. On March 11, 2011, the port was damaged by a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Japan.
