I am not a materialistic person, so when the question of &#8220;what can you not live without?&#8221; comes around, I have to really think. I can live without my cell phone, my car, my pets, even coffee (as difficult as that one would be&#8230;) etc. Life would be harder, yes, but I can live without those things. After much thought, I figured out I cannot live without writing utensils! Silly, right? Think about it; if we did not have pens and pencils, where would we take down notes or doodle on paper? Okay, a computer can be used to take notes, even set reminders and things like that and the drawing/sketching applications now a days are unreal. I, however, have an obsession with pens. I like to have them, for no reason really. Before I go buy more, it is important to know how far pens have come. Writing utensils have come a long way. The ancient Sumerians and Babylonians used triangular stylus to write in soft clay that would later be baked (para 2). Romans used styluses as well, but they wrote in was which was much easier to write on (para 2). After some disadvantages from both of these, the Egyptians used reed pens that were made from a single reed straw, cut and shaped into a point (para 2). Reed pens were replaced with quills that were made of flight feathers from large birds, and the hollow shaft of the feather held the ink (para 3).&#160;The first quills were cut into a square tip and rigid. They mimicked the reed pens. A few hundred years later, graphite was discovered in England, and then came the mixture of powdered graphite and clay (para 3), which lead to the discovery of pencils. After the pencil, in 1822 John Mitchell from Birmingham was the first to mass produce metal nibs for pens, that lasted longer than quills because they did not need to be sharpened and could also be written with a finer point (para 4). In 1888, the ball point pen was created by John J. Loud and was improved by Laszlo Biro in 1983 (para 4). From writing on clay with styluses to ball point pens, pens and pencils have matured, in a way. Learning where pens have come makes my love for pens seem a little less crazy. Pens are something others may be able to live without, I however cannot. I love pens in all colors, shapes, sizes, and from all different places. Especially when I can snag a spare. Pens may be something that seems unorthodox to live without with all the technology used now a days. Technology is important, yes, but pens make people happy with all their different styles and colors. At least they make me happy. Pens are important, and I hope they never lose their sparkle.&#160;

When I go to an aquarium, I feel like a kid again. Seeing all of those animals up close is so neat! I love going and seeing the different water animals, whether they can move or not. My favorite water animal would have to be the jellyfish, despite the fact I got stung by a manta war jellyfish. They are such cool, beautiful creatures! I would love to have one as a pet so I can look at it all day long. :) 

Not too long ago, I went to the Fernbank Museum in Atlanta, GA. It was so surreal to see how big dinosaurs were! If they were still roaming the world today, us humans would probably try to domesticate them and have them as pets. Being able to put their size in perspective was a cool experience. Their eggs start so small, it's astounding to see how big some of them can get!

When my sister moved from Florida to Tennessee, she wanted to go up to the top of the Smokey Mountain National Park. She had not seen snow since she was a baby and was as happy as a clam when we were on the way up to the top and she saw snow on the ground! We stopped for a photo op that needed some climbing to get to. After trying for a good minute, and much laughter, the picture turned out great!

Daisy, our German Shepard loves to pretend to play fetch. My husband and I took her outside to play for the first time after we bought our house last year and she decided to get the biggest stick she could find. Her stick was a HUGE fallen tree branch! Of course, it was impossible to get it from her, but she had the time of her life trying to keep us from getting her stick.

Someone thought, as they were sitting in traffic for 2 hours everyday, that flying to and from work would be much faster. Flying would make his commute only 9 minutes! With an article like this, it makes me think the Jetson's is finally becoming a reality. However, it also makes me think of all the extra people in the air instead of on the ground. If a crash were to happen, people would literally fall to their deaths. Pollution is also another thing to think about; cars already pollute the air, what about helicopters? I will say, the fact that it's electric is really helpful. If this happens on a bigger scale, soon cars will be old relics and we'll be living in the future! One helicopter at a time, right?

A day at the zoo!? Yes, please! Taking elementary students to the zoo may be a challenge, but with enough chaperones and will power anything's possible! The zoo offers many different things for students of all ages. They have the regular zoo hours of 9-4 Mon-Fri and 9-5 Sat&#38;Sun. After hours, they have the night safari and Bedtime with the Beasts, where you stay the night at the zoo! Contact Louise for any educational needs. This plant sits outside my house. I'm not sure of it's name, but it looks like a shrub of some kind. It has compound leaves with many leaflets and these leaves aren't lobed. This shrub/tree also produces berries for the critters that can get to them. Although it looks over grown, I feel like the unkempt looking leaves towards the bottom give this plant character.&#160;

Much can change in the course of three months. This poor shrub lost it's leaves! But, not to worry, they will grow back in the spring time. I will admit, this shrub too longer to shed its leaves than most of the trees in my yard. This one lost its leaves about a week ago versus the others that have been going bald for over a month.

Teaching science would probably be scary at first for me, mainly because my science education does not extend far from high school level. At any rate, I've always enjoyed learning about science so I think teaching it all year would be fun but not without it's challenges. There would be many group projects to be done in class as well as awesome experiments to keep the students, and myself, entertained and engaged all year long.

There has been so much I have learned and can't wait to use in my classroom. I feel so much more confident to do something that incorporates science than I did at the beginning of the semester. I am actually excited to get in a classroom and start with some of these activities. I love that there are many different things that the students can do on their own and take home to share the love of learning science with their families. I. Can't. Wait!

Can't make it to the zoo? No worries! The zoo can come to you! They can bring live animals to your school and have up to three showings a day. They can travel up as far as Asheville, but the cost gets a little higher for overnight lodging. The average cost is about $75 for the first showing in counties outside of Knox County and each additional showing is $50. The shows last about 45 minutes and the instructor usually has volunteers come up to help.
