What did we learn about Mary?
Mary Nyawira Muchane is a mycologist working in mushroom research and conservation.
Her mission is to characterize different kinds of mushrooms in the wild, culture (grow) them further research and develop ways to protect them in the wild
When she was a child, she wanted to be a Scientist. She was amazed by how things operate in the world. Sun moving from east to west without no one controlling it. A big tree growing from a very small seed. These things inspired her to know how such amazing things happen.
What did we learn about mushrooms from Mary?
This is Mary doing her research.
In Africa,
Kenya.
Mushrooms are fungus which appears during the rainy period and disappears during the dry seasons.
The most common mushrooms are umbrellas shaped and are found growing in yards, forests, fields, and gardens. However, other mushrooms occur in different shapes and varieties and colors. Some look like balls (puff balls), bird nests, cups and many others. Color range from black, brown, bright yellow, green, violet, grey to white.
Many species of mushrooms are food, and some are cultivated in our gardens or are sold in supermarkets. Other mushrooms are poisonous causing death when eaten. Other mushrooms have medicine properties and are used to make drugs we eat when sick. In natural condition mushrooms help recycle nutrients, and make them available to the plants. Knowing types of mushrooms is important because it helps know which can be used as food, medicine or helps us know how they grow so that we can protect them. I am doing work of knowing the different kinds of mushroom, their uses and how they can be conserved.
