What is a story element? Story elements are the parts of a narrative story. The elements of a story are characters, setting, plot, and the problem and solution.

With your partner, discuss the story elements of the Tortoise and the Hare. Who are the main characters? Where is the story taking place? What happened during the story?

The Story Elements book supports ISTE-S standard 1.3 through the use of technology. My student will be given the materials needed to strengthen his knowledge and construct responses based on what he has learned about the differing story elements in the stories he has read. My student will use technology to explore practice activities that involve the use of videos, read aloud stories, games, and a digital assessment. He will be using these different types of technology to strengthen his knowledge and learn new information about elements of a story. Through the different uses of technology, my student will practice using the elements of a story to identify the characters and describe them. He will describe the setting, and the events in the story. The different formats to present information, will help him have a better understand of story elements. They will help him be able to better pick them out of a story as he is reading on his own.

The Story Elements book supports ISTE-E standard 2.5 through the integration of discussion, technology, and visual learning. The design of this book supports my student in his need for differentiated instruction. As the designer, I created lessons that supported his need for visual learning by integrating a video that discusses story elements and the meaning of each element. Through the design of this book, my student will be self-driven to learn about story elements because he will be interested in the different pieces of technology, collaboration and discussions with his classmates, and visual to support his strength of visual learning. He loves to work with technology, so the design of this book will intrigue his mind to dig deeper into learning more about story elements in a digital format.

Read each passage and answer the story elements questions about each passage. 

My student is a 4th grade student who qualifies for special education services in the general education classroom and special education resource room. His primary disability is Autism Spectrum Disorder with a secondary disability of language impairment, and speech impairment. He reads at a Fountas and Pinnell reading level G. A level G reading level is a middle of the year first grade reading level. He struggles with reading fluency and comprehension. He has difficulty following simple directions on assignments and tasks to be completed. He demonstrates a severe delay in articulation with letter sounds L and R. He receives speech services for assistance with these speech delays. His behavior plan represents the different subject areas in the general education and special education classroom, as well as specials area classes, lunch, and recess. He receives a smiley face if all assignments are completed, he has followed directions, and followed classroom expectations. If one or more of these behavior plan elements are not followed he will receive a straight face, and possibly a sad face depending on behaviors exhibited. His behavior goal is to perform activities such as planning, organizing, strategizing, pay attention to and remembering details, and managing time and space. He focuses on developing solutions to real- world problems and making adjustments to reach a desired outcome. He also focuses on demonstrating the skills necessary to properly interact with his peers, school personnel, and community members.

Story Elements Assessment 

The Indiana College and Career Ready standard chosen is a 4th grade reading standard. The standard is 4.RL.2.3 and reads; Describe a character, setting, or event in a story or play, drawing on specific details in the text, and how that impacts the plot. This Indiana standard is a building block from second and third grade. As fourth graders this standard goes more in depth with the plot and events of the story that make up the plot. This is an important standard for students to understand and master because the story elements of a book or story are important to the understanding of what they are reading. This book will help my student with learning the elements of a story by presenting the elements at his level. There are videos and visuals available for him to have when he is learning each element to better support the information he is learning and practicing.
