The Truth
"books published about people of color and First/Native Nations people are disproportionately low, and books by members of these groups are even lower in number" (Flax 2018, p. 1)
"Other groups, including people with queer identities, those with disabilities, and members of minority religions, also go underrepresented." (Flax 2018, p.1)
Publishers have attempted to respond to this imbalance.
Independent publishers have emerged to fill the void, and larger houses have also responded with specialized groups and teams, also known as "imprints."

PUBLISHING INDUSTRY
root cause
Despite the progress that has been made with the emergence of independent socially focused publishers, and imprints created or acquired by the large publishing houses in response to social justice demands, world literature still grossly underrepresents minority groups.
Why?
One theory is that the root cause of the lack of diverse literature in the world lies in the personnel of the publishing firms themselves.
"Roughly 80 percent of the children’s book world—authors and illustrators, editors, execs, marketers, and reviewers—is white." (Slater 2016, p.1)
