There was the "king of the feast", saturnalicius princeps, who had the task of directing the good course of the feast, while the gladiators entertained the audience in the arena.

Friends were invited to lunch, gifts were sent and received, called strenae, gambling was allowed, which in normal times was strictly forbidden.

The rich donated gold objects, silver plates and other valuables. The poor gave candles (waxes) and clay statuettes (sealaria), or some other object of little value.

The slaves had full equality with the masters: they could reproach their vices&#160;

The slaves sat at the table with them and instead of serving they were served with the best the kitchen offered the cellar ( wines )

Romans in these days were indulging in the wildest joy. The military operations, the work, the administration of justice, the school were suspended.

The Saturnalia began with a solemn sacrifice in the temple of Saturn on the Campidoglio followed by a great banquet in common. The cry: " Io Saturnalia!" was sung, which was repeated in the streets and in the houses.

Saturnalia was an ancinet Roman Festival in honour of the god Saturn, with festivities from 17 to 23 December.
