Torun - the Gothic city

Torun is a city in the north part of Poland.

Torun was established in 1233 by the Teutonic Knights, so Torun is one of the oldest Polish cities.

The Teutonic Knights built a castle surrounded by walls. Today you can see only ruins of the castle.

There are two parts of old Torun. The Old Town

and the New Town

Not only gothic buildings but also modern housing estates are in Torun.

There is a river called Visla in the city, therefore there are three bridges in Torun. Two of them are for cars.

You can admire the city walls which surround the old part of the city.

There are many gothic houses in Torun. They are called tenements.

The central place in the Old Town is the gothic townhall.

There are many historic churches in our city where you can see beautiful stained-glass windows. Below you can see pictures only some of them.

It is built as a calendar. The main tower is like a year and four small towers located on the corners of the building are like four seasons. Twelve big halls inside the townhall are like twelve months. Fifty-two rooms inside the building are like 52 weeks in a year. Three hundred fifty five windows are like 365 days in a year.

There is one big university in the city. Many young people study here.

Torun is also a city of sport. There is a modern speedway stadium called MOTOARENA.

You can have lots of fun at the sports centre in Torun.

What is more there are two big footbal pitches in the city and many swimming pools. There is also a funny aqua park.

There is a big city stadium of athletics, too.

When residents of Torun want to relax they can go for a walk to the city park. It is a big and nice place.

Children love going to the Puppet Theatre.

They can also visit a smal zoo where you can watch goats, lamas, bisons, different birds and foxes.

They like visiting the Planetarium, too.

Torun is famous for three basic facts: 1. It is a city where Nicolaus Copernicus was born. In the photo you can see his house.

2. There are many gothic monuments. But very famous is the Leanning Tower which has its own legend.

3. Delicious gingerbreads - they are unbeatable.
