Corona in connection with the environment

Since you have a lot of time in quarantine, you also might think a lot about different topics. Like me, for example, about the environment.

I thought about the pollution in general but also how it led to pandemic pollution due to covid-19.

It wasn't just me who thought about it, but also my whole class. We learned about a website that launches a campaign against ocean plastic.

We want to help and decided to initiate a virtual turtle sponsorship. The name of the turtle is Frank-Sabine-Overwater. That alone wasn't enough for us, we wanted to give others the chance to help too. We created a post about our turtle and shared it on social media platforms. We informed others and could learn of the success of other sponsorships.

The whole thing started 2020. Suddenly there was this new virus, relatively quickly came the restrictions with which we now have to live. At the beginning of the pandemic, I didn´t take this whole thing seriously and thought it was over again in a few weeks… Well, I didn´t think so. I´ve only been meeting one person for almost a year. I´m starting to put the whole situation on my mind, I think many people can do it that way.

Corona has shown me how vulnerable the world is and that it is important to protect me and others. Unfortunately many people disagree and don´t take the situation seriously, which makes me both sad and angry, because only everything will take longer… When a lot was relaxed again in the summer of 2020, I was very happy. I was finally able to meet with several people and go out.

First of all, I want to start how sea pollution is created. Generally speaking, sea pollution is created when garbage gets into the seas/the oceans. 80% of the pollution comes from land, about 75 percent of all sea pollution consists of plastics. The annual input of plastic is 4.8 to 12.7 million tons. There is a lot more to say about it than just this because that isn't even everything... - Approximately there are about 86 million tons of plastic already in the ocean. - According to a study published in 2020 by the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Research (as of August 2020) there are around 399,000 tons of plastic on the surface of the oceans alone. - Only a small part of the plastic waste floats on the surface, the rest is transported into deeper waters or on the seabed and can hardly be retrieved. - Every year up to 135.000 marine animals, a million sea birds and 250,000 sea turtles die a terrible death. - Furthermore, there is a whole isle full of plastic garbage. Over an area of around 1.6 million square kilometers, 80,000 tons of rubbish consisting of bottles, containers, fishing nets, microparticles and other rubbish waft in the waters of the Pacific.

I think I'm starting the pandemic, even if it's all too much for me sometimes, I'm abnormally bored and digital learning / e-learning is not so easy in the lockdown. But I guess I spend time in a good way. For example, I learned to love and accept myself for who I am and got to know myself better personally because I thought a lot about myself. After our school project, I started thinking and researching a lot about the environment, plastic waste and the animals that die because of plastic waste, because I also had time in the pandemic to find out about such important things. This time was very difficult for most of us, but it is just as difficult for marine animals. More than 10 million tons of waste end up in the oceans every year and kill thousands upon thousands of marine animals because they mistake plastic for natural food. For example, turtles get caught in old fishing nets. More than 250.000 turtles die every year as a result. One of them could also be our turtle Frank Sabine Overwater. Just thinking about it is really sad... that's why the last hope of the sea turtles are animal rights activists and volunteers!

During the pandemic time I dealt with the topic of nutrition. I used to cook and bake a lot.

I've cooked a lot of new dishes that I didn't even know.

Since everything was closed, due to the lockdown, there were no activities that could still be done, so I discovered hiking for myself.

I try to hike every weekend, usually between 14 and 17 kilometers.

The name Frank-Sabine-Overwater was chosen for our class mascot. The idea was to bring our class closer together by working together on the name and thereby build a good relationship between each student of the class. The idea of          how the name can be linked to our class name FSO91 reflecting our class in the name of our class mascot.

After a long discussion, our class came to the conclusion to keep the name for the class mascot gender neutral, so that everyone is a part of the name whether male or female. After all, it came to a male name for the F= Frank and a female name for the S= Sabine. For our "O" of FSO91 we searched for a suitable last name, which stands for our class community and came to the decision to take O for Overwater as last name. This last name stands for keeping us afloat because during our time at the Käthe Kollwitz vocational college we had to learn not to go under in school material. But above all, O= Overwater describes in addition to keeping afloat especially the strength of the class to master everything together and also if it is sometimes difficult not to give up. That's why we decided to name the little turtle, for which we have completed a sponsorship, after our class mascot to prepare it for its long and sometimes troubled path into the big wide world.

I guess I spend the time in lockdown in a good way, even if digital learning / e-learning isn´t that easy.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I faced up to my own mental health. These times have been very tough for most of us. I needed to keep myself on a good healthy track and I thought a lot about my past, my goals in life, how to reach them and my whole mindset in general. Self-love and caring about myself helped me a lot to deal with it. I also concentrate on things like sustainability and my own consumption behavior. I care a lot about things like our environment, global warming and plastic waste even before the pandemic and our school project began, but I guess I do care more now because I had the time to focus on my priorities and interests during Covid-19. As an example, I am a vegetarian for like three months now. I read a lot about veganism, sustainability and minimalism. Those things changed my own behavior a lot. Let me explain quickly: I hate single-use masks, because of the waste and sea/environmental-problems they cause, but I found a way to deal with this issue: I cut off the ties after using them. This can help a lot because if they end up in our Ocean turtles or other sea mammals entangle in them or mistake them for food and finally choke on them. I think think that even little things can make a difference, specifically when it comes to things like rethinking our mindset or sustainability.

Worum geht es in diesem Buch überhaupt? Die Coronapandemie und ihre Folgen beeinflussen uns alle: Tiere, Meere/Ozeane, unsere Umwelt im allgemeinem und natürlich auch uns Menschen als Individuen. Wir alle machen unterschiedlichste Erfahrungen. Genau darum soll es in diesem E-Book gehen. Wir, die FSO91 des KKBK und unsere Englischlehrerin Fr. Heßler nehmen Dich mit auf unsere persönliche Reise durch die Pandemie. Im ersten Teil des Buches (S.7-S.26) sprechen wir mit dir über unser Projekt aus dem Englischunterricht, in dem wir uns mit "Pandemic pollution", also den Auswirkungen der Corona Pandemie auf unsere&nbsp;Umwelt und insbesondere auf unsere Meere und Ozeane beschäftigt haben. I started to eat very healthy. I also started doing workouts almost every day and I can say I never was in such a good condition as I am now. It’s a consistent part of my life now. Before the pandemic I really kinda ate what I wanted and wasn’t motivated to do sports at all. During the lockdown I started to think that when I want to be healthy I have to start make a change now. Because of this I feel annoyed with the gyms not being open. I think many people suffer from it because they go there to stay healthy and that is what is the most important isn't it? Since our project about Oceanmata I started&nbsp;to think and pay&nbsp;more attention to sustainability and our environment. I think it’s so bad in which condition the seas and beaches all over the world are. Now, every time as I see food with much plastic packaging in the supermarket I have a picture in my head of the plastic waste wich the Oceanmata team is picking up on the beaches. I started using a toothbrush made out of wood and not plastic and I think it really makes no difference while tooth brushing. I also noticed that I am buying many clothes on second hand platforms. I really like it and am doing it for a while now. The prices often are more than 50% cheaper and you can find such good clothes with good quality. I Also have a good felling buying the things because the environment is not really suffering from it. Since the pandemic I started to be happy about little things..like going to the superarket or going to school wich was super normal for me before corona. I really hope that people are seriously starting to think about our environment and plastic waste. Especially because I see many masks on the streets and I think the effect is drastically going to be seen.

We've managed to get others to rethink their actions and maybe even want to help. The important thing is to know that one can help even with a small budget.

In "lockdown two“ I didn't feel so well again for a while but that didn't last long. But now, in "lockdown three“, I feel pretty good since a while and I am hoping it will stay that way. Looking back, I made a huge change, my self confidence has increased because I spent a lot of time on my own to focus on myself. I got an even better relationship with my parents because I was often at home. I learned what is really important in my life and I recognized that I really miss skiing &amp; going on holidays. I started reading books again and sometimes I went for a walk with a friend. The whole time I dealt with the subject racism, because it has always interested me, but I never found the time to deal with the subject. I really learned to enjoy the little things for example there was snow here for a few days that made me very happy. I want to give hope, to not give up because there is a better time coming you just have to be very patient &amp; it is indeed okay that you're not always okay.

But why is there so much plastic? Plastic is a cheap, resistant and easy to manufacture material. In addition, plastic is more durable than it is needed for single use goods. That means it is in our environment longer than it is needed. Over the years more and more plastic was produced for exmple in the 1950s 1.5 million plastic was manufactured, in the year 2015 it was already 322 million tons. A very small part of the plastic is recycled, the rest ends up in landfills or in the environment. Plastic can never be completely broken down in the environment, but it can be broken down into small particles that are barely visible. This “microplastic” is therefore difficult to determine and it is impossible to remove it from the environment. Microplastic is even in the food we eat. It's a never ending cycle, we buy plastic, throw it away, it ends up in the oceans, the sea animals eat it and then we eat the sea animals. So even we are affected with plastic/microplastic and it harms our health climbing up the food chain. Alina Wrobbel für die FSO91

In the beginning, it was difficult to keep distance from my friends and now it's normal.

Of course, I'm looking forward to the time when we can do something together again.

In my opinion, it's difficult for everyone at the moment. The isolation affects the human psyche.

Furthermore, I believe there will be strong aftermaths even if it's all over. People will continue to stay in distance and avoid contact.

One can say the Covid-19 pandemic affects everyone. Usually staying in my house for a longer time isn’t that difficult for me. But after spending more than 3 months in a lockdown it is slowly getting on my psyche. Before the corona pandemic I loved going to the club with my friends. Not seeing any friends, going out for dinner or symply going to he cinema is hard. Especially at our age. But I am grateful that I don‘t suffer from serious diseases like depression because of the pandemic. One thing that really affected me in a good way is my self care and health. I started to eat very healthy.

Wir als Klasse, haben uns unter anderem auch Gedanken darum gemacht, wie man nachhaltiger im Alltag werden kann. Dazu haben wir verschiedenste Möglichkeiten, um Plastik zu vermeiden, zusammengetragen - Diese Punkte/Handlungsempfehlungen sind alle alltagstauglich, weil sie sehr leicht umsetzbar sind.&nbsp; Mittlerweile gibt es viele Alternativen zu plastikhaltigen Produkten. Z. B. bei Pflegeprodukten wie Shampoo, Duschgel oder Deo gibt es die Möglichkeit auf feste Produkte umzusteigen, um auf die Plastik Verpackungen verzichten zu können. Auch Produkte wie Zahnbürsten müssen nicht aus Plastik sein, sondern können durch Holz oder Bambus ersetzt werden. Viele weitere Produkte können mit diesen Materialien ersetzt werden. Bei Kosmetik sollte man bsw. drauf achten, dass kein Mikroplastik enthalten ist. Auch beim Einkaufen kann Plastik gespart werden. An der Obsttheke kann man statt einer Plastiktüte Obst/Gemüse-Netze verwenden und für die Einkäufe eine wiederverwendbare Tasche nutzen. Auch bei Getränken kann auf eine Plastikflasche verzichtet werden z.B mit einem Sodastreamer oder wiederverwendbaren Flaschen aus Glas. Aber auch beim Kauf von Klamotten kann man nachhaltig handeln. So kann man „second-hand“ Kleidungsstücke leihen (s. Clip) oder Klamotten kaufen u.a. bei Patagonia, diese vertreten die Philosophie "Buy once, buy well and mend clothing for a longer life span" und bieten einen "mobile mending service" in Europa an. Selbstverständlich geht es auch darum, gebrauchte Kleidung zu kaufen oder an Freunde oder Familie weiterzugeben, wenn man diese nicht mehr trägt. Eine Sache, die vor allem aktuell bei der Maskenpflicht hilfreich ist, ist es die Masken richtig zu entsorgen: Bänder an den Seiten abzuschneiden, damit sich Tiere nicht verfangen, für den Fall, dass die Masken über illegale Mülltransporte aus bspw. asiatischen Ländern in das Meer gelangen. All das sind Dinge, die jeder ganz einfach umsetzen kann, ohne auf etwas verzichten zu müssen. Versuch es doch einmal selbst und hilf uns dabei, die Welt zu retten/besser zu machen.

What did we achieve with our contribution? Our contribution has reached many people, such as the students, the teachers and even outsiders. We have addressed the pollution of the oceans and made it clear that animals depend on our help. Our post was often liked and shared through stories and reposts. We even managed to get others to buy a single turtle and look into the subject closely.

The time of the pandemic was a series of ups and downs for me. But during the pandemic I learned a lot about myself and my surroundings. In the first two weeks of the first "lockdown“ I was not feeling very well like the most of us because it was a situation that I have never experienced in my life and I didn't know how to cope with it. Suddenly, I couldn't work in kindergarten anymore and in addition to that everything was switched to e-learning which wasn't really easy in the first place. Over time, I got along better with it and felt better as I got used to the situation. I can now deal with online lessons almost better than with normal lessons because you always have to hand in the tasks at certain times, which motivates me to do them. It is also good that I can sleep longer, that also keeps me motivated. In the past I sometimes didn't do my homework because I was not motivated. But now that I have time, motivation and enough sleep I am doing my homework. But the fact that the lessons were not so intensive makes the final exams probably more difficult. After 2 months I was able to go back to work that built me up even more.

1. Nesting My mum lays a nest of 100-200 eggs every 2-3- years. Generally in the area where she was born..

2. Hatching at The Beach As a hatchling I'm waiting until the end of the day to break through my eggshell and to head for the ocean.

3. First Swim This is a shoot from my first swim into coastal waters. I am really hungry and will return to my breeding area shortly after my first ocean experience.

4. Open Ocean Strong ocean currents are transporting me, as a little turtle, to open-ocean habitats. After the oceanic periods, my turtle-mates and me move near to the shore to finish growing.

The lockdown time was very difficult for me last year. It's a very private topic, but I would like to share this time with you and tell you how I feelt during this time. The worst time of my life began in March 2020. Since December 2019 a person who was very close to me was in the nursing home because she was very ill and caring for at home was no longer possible. Everything was fine until mid-March and you were allowed to visit her, but then the first lockdown came and you were no longer allowed to go to the nursing home. For me it was a very hard setback not to be able to visit her anymore, but unfortunately that was not all. In April the person's health went down. On April 8th, 2020 my nightmare unfortunately came true ... I could not accompany her with death, she had to die alone because one was no longer allowed to see her. My psyche has suffered a lot as a result and I am still very concerned about the loss to this day. This time showed me that you should appreciate every second with your loved ones,because you never know when it will end. PLEASE APPRECIATE THE TIME WITH YOUR LOVED ONES AND ENJOY IT !!! During this time we should also be very careful about other people's health! Since the end of 2020 the motto has been: digital learning / e-learning! This time is not easy for many students,but you have to make the most of it. I think digital learning is okay,but it still makes it difficult for me to learn something in some subjects or to teach myself something. I am very happy that we can go back to school soon and that some normality is coming back. We must not give up, even when the times are very hard.

After the English project, I am still thinking about the environment about the plastic waste and the animals that die because of the plastic waste because this time is not only hard for us humans, but also for marine animals. Because many people ruthlessly throw their masks somewhere, millions of tons of garbage ends up in the oceans threatening and killing marine mammals. An example are the sea turtles because they confuse plastic waste for jellyfish and then they die because of the plastic. For this reason, we as a class, have also decided to give a turtle a new life. Our Frank Sabine Overwater.

Our first step was to collect information and to inform ourselves about aims and services of Ocean Mata - especially when it comes to the "Clean-up Project" and the "Turtle Edition". Take a close look at our lesson material to check out our research.

A Course Diary by Käthe-Kollwitz-Berufskolleg

After a short time in groups we documented the results of our class discussion in a handout:

The pandemic let me think a lot I thought a lot about the future - unfortunately. I am worried about my professional career. I am worried about my family and friends. But the pandemic also taught me to be grateful for the simple things in life. It has helped to be/maintain close contact with friends and family online. I also found a lot of distraction in going on a walk with my dog. You have to look positively into the future.

Later, we informed our class teachers about the turtle sponsorship - in this context we also practiced "mediation" for our final exam. Mediating means translating from English to German and vice versa in your own words. As text served Frank Sabine Overwater's mail &amp; a scientific article about sea turtles.

Oceanmata is a start-up company which collects plastic in Bali. Its aim is to reduce the pollution of ocean plastic. The company sells for example compostable cellphone cases.

They also have a turtle sponsorship. With it, you can support the company's goal and the turtles, because for each turtle they remove one pound of plastic from the ocean. With the English course we bought one turtle: Frank Sabine Overwater.

We also think and brainstorm about how to become more sustainable on a daily basis in class. With these little lifehacks it should be more easy for you to reduce your plastic consumption due to the fact that there are so many other options than plastic. Especially when it comes to packages our advices are quite simple, so it should be easy for you to integrate them in your daily life: -&nbsp;Use solid shampoo, shower gel, deodorant instead of products made of plastic packaging. Use a toothbrush made out of bamboo. Watch out for microplastics in your cosmetics and try to avoid them. Use vegan cosmetic products instead. -&nbsp;Use your own bags in the supermarket.&nbsp;Avoid single-use plastic bags &amp; use re-useable nets for your fruits and veggies. -&nbsp;Try to avoid plastic bottles for your drinks. Use a ‘Soda Stream‘ or bottles made out of glass instead. - Buy your clothes second hand, or give old clothes to friends - you don‘t always need the latest clothing items. There are several brands that pursue a sustainable philosophy like “Buy once, buy well and mend clothing for a longer life span" like Patagonia, which also offers a mending service in Europe. Another approach would be to rent fashion items - "Rent a runway-project" is supported by many “influencers“ in the U.S. (watch the clip above) to promote a sustainable love for fashion. -&nbsp;&nbsp;Cut of the ribbons of your single use masks before you throw them away. In this way it is harder for sea animals like turtles to get stuck in them. Sounds easy, doesn‘t it ? Try out our recommendations by yourself and help to save and care about our planet!

As a class, we bought a turtle-egg to spread awareness of the plastics in the sea and also published two posts on Instagram via kkbk_oberhausen. The text was written by&nbsp;two&nbsp;students&nbsp;of the class.

Mental Health &amp; Sustainability

What is this E-Book even about? The Covid-19 pandemic and its consequences are influencing all of us: animals, the seas and Oceans and of course also us as individuals. All of us are affected by it in a different kind of way and we all make different experiences during these times. That`s exactly what this E-Book is going to be about. It is the story of our unique impressions and decisions to deal with the pandemic. We, the Class FSO91, and our English Teacher Ms Heßler, from KKBK, will take you on a trip through our personal pandemic experiences! In the first part of this book (p.7-p.26) we are going to talk about our project we did in English class. In this project we concerned ourselves with " pandemic pollution" , which is one of the biggest consequences happening to our seas and oceans during this pandemic. On the following pages you can find all of our baby steps we did in &amp; during the project. This also includes our lesson materials and the lesson outcomes. This means that you are able to follow our whole working process! During this process we wanted to answer the following questions to ourselves: What could we do as individuals to fight pandemic pollution? How can we interact with and support our environment during these times as a group?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Spoiler: Our personal solution is a baby turtle called Frank Sabine Overwater! The second part of this book, starting by page 14, is about our personal experiences and some personal lessons out of/from this pandemic and how we have experienced the time in lockdown. What did the pandemic and this project do to us and what did we learn about "pollution"? To answer those questions, some of us designed their own pages. Have fun while reading!

Now, 2020, in the new year: The second lockdown and mutations of the virus… Again, I feel isolated and I´m bored quite often. But my hopes are still up… I hope I can be vaccinated very quickly and we will achieve herd immunisation as soon as possible.

But a completely different thing is: how do we deal with our environment and the masks? Unfortunately, now that you aren´t longer allowed to use cloth masks anymore. The medical- or the ffp2-masks end up on the streets, in the bushes and also in the sea. That makes me very sad. I hope we can find a way to stop this on a global level as soon possible…
