Extinction Status

hammerhead sharks are endangered. That means there are not a lot of them left.

A kind of hammerhead shark called the Great Hammerhead is critically endangered. But none of them is extinct. Extinct means it is already not in the world, for example the dinosaurs are extinct.

The great hammerhead shark (Sphyrna mokarran) is a species of sharks that is critically endangered, with some research suggesting there are&nbsp;as few as 200&nbsp;remaining in the ocean.

What's it like?

hammerhead sharks we usually see is 3.5 m (11 ft)&nbsp;long. But the longest ones can be 20 feet (6.1 m) long, which is equal to 2 professional basketball hoops!

A baby hammerhead shark's cephalofoil , which is also it's 'head' is round. When it starts to grow up, it slowly flattens.

Male scalloped hammerhead sharks can grow to nearly 6 feet in length and weigh up to 64 pounds. Females are larger, growing to more than 8 feet and weighing&nbsp;80 pounds.
