Students will collaborate in small groups by playing a simulation game demonstrating "The Tragedy of the Commons," to be able to understand the role of overfishing on humans and the environment. Students will then have to take an open-response quiz, where they will need to get 7 (out of 10) points to pass.
Students who are unable to meet this grading requirement will require further instruction and assistance.

- How is fishing regulated? Is there a proper system to determine how much fish can be taken out of the ocean?

- What is the tragedy of the commons? What causes people to ignore the issue of fishing when they know what they’re doing?

- What is industrial and sustainable fishing?

INDUSTRIAL/COMMERCIAL FISHING is the act of catching seafood (fish, shrimps, sharks, etc), for commercial profit. This can be done not only by big organizations, but by small businesses as well.
What do you think of when you hear fishing?
Maybe you think you and your dad fishing out on a lake, while others might even think of dory from finding dory!
In a small group discuss what fishing means to you and jot down the key words that pop into your minds.

Industrial Fishing
INDUSTRIAL/COMMERCIAL FISHING is the act of catching seafood (fish, shrimps, sharks, etc), for commercial profit. This can be done not only by big organizations, but by small businesses as well.

There is an estimated amount of 3,500,000,000,000 fish in the sea!

Tragedy of the Commons
The "TRAGEDY OF THE COMMONS" is an economic theory which explains that when individuals have access to the same resource, they will try to get as much profit as they can. They will use up the resources to the point of depletion.
